"What counts as special?"
Curious, Kudu couldn't help but take another look at Chen Changsheng.
Chen Changsheng said, "You have traveled to many places. Have you ever seen a location that looks one way during a visit, completely different the next, only to revert to its original state when you return once more?"
Kudu was completely baffled.
"Where would you find a place like that?"
Chen Changsheng said, "Perhaps one exists?"
Hearing this, Kudu couldn't help but think it over.
He stroked his chin and said, "Now that you mention it, I do recall a place."
"That place is extremely bizarre. The sun still rises in the east and sets in the west, but the shadows on that mountain never change."
Chen Changsheng's curiosity was piqued. He asked, "Where is this place?"
Kudu was about to speak, but then he thought of something.
"Ahem."
He swept his robes open, revealing a whole array of Dharma Instruments and spiritual pills to Chen Changsheng.
"Senior, care to support my business?"
Seeing this, Chen Changsheng smiled helplessly and ultimately bought an item with a single Yin-Yang Copper Coin.
Kudu had initially thought it would just be a small transaction, but when that Yin-Yang Copper Coin landed in his palm, he was thrilled beyond measure.
"You truly are a wonderful senior! Senior, I'll take you there myself right now!"
With this copper coin, he basically had nothing to worry about.
He had struck it rich!
Under Kudu's guidance, the two disembarked from the Flying Vessel and followed a road north.
After traveling for about seven days, they saw a mountain towering amidst a distant range. However, it wasn't particularly conspicuous; nestled among the many peaks, it looked entirely ordinary.
But when Chen Changsheng entered the mountain and observed the shadows of the trees, he discovered that this place was exactly as Kudu had described.
The shadows here did not move!
They only existed in two states: present or vanished.
Watching this scene, Chen Changsheng stroked his chin. The situation was incredibly eerie.
"I didn't lie to you, Senior."
Kudu said, "This place is just that mysterious."
Chen Changsheng searched the mountain stream for a long time, attempting to find some clues. He opened his Dharma Eye and examined the flow of the Spiritual Vein here, yet he still found nothing.
There were no traces and no Divine Abilities at work. How could the shadows here remain unchanging?
Seeing this, Kudu asked, "Say, Senior, why are you looking for a place like this?"
"This Chen is curious about novel places."
"I see..."
Kudu didn't ask further. At night, he lit a campfire in the mountains.
The firelight fell upon the surrounding trees, casting shadows exactly like those seen during the day.
They still pointed in the exact same direction, entirely unchanged.
If the light were shining directly down from above, Chen Changsheng could understand why the shadows remained fixed. But these shadows were slanted, yet they never shifted.
This was beyond Chen Changsheng's understanding.
Kudu followed Chen Changsheng as he observed the mountain for several consecutive days.
There was still no progress.
Ultimately, feeling helpless, Chen Changsheng sensed that he didn't have much time left.
"You may go. Also, please keep an eye out for more places like this. This Chen will come find you again."
"Whatever you say, Senior!"
Kudu patted his chest and readily agreed.
A single Yin-Yang Copper Coin could practically buy his life.
...
After returning to the Underworld, Chen Changsheng mentioned this place to the Demon Sovereign.
The Demon Sovereign had existed in the mortal realm in his early years, so perhaps he would remember such a location.
"That mountain..."
"I do have some impression of it."
The Demon Sovereign looked at Chen Changsheng and said, "The shadows on that mountain are bound by a rule. It has existed since very early on. Back when the Demon Gate flourished, I turned that mountain into a prison. Under the sunlight, those held there would lose all sense of time. It was a profound torture."
"So, you actually don't know why it's like that either?"
"I only know it is related to a rule."
Chen Changsheng stroked his chin, falling into deep thought.
The Demon Sovereign said, "There's nothing particularly special about the place. Perhaps some cultivator from the early years set it up to trap someone."
"That is the most likely possibility."
Even so, it couldn't be denied that this mountain made Chen Changsheng incredibly curious.
He felt unwilling to let it go without figuring it out.
The Demon Sovereign didn't press the topic, only saying, "Let's play chess."
Chen Changsheng was a little surprised. He raised an eyebrow and asked, "Do you know something?"
The Demon Sovereign paused and asked, "Why do you ask?"
"Are you in a rush to play chess?"
The Demon Sovereign froze, seemingly realizing it as well.
He had been acting a little unnatural.
For so many years, he almost never rushed Chen Changsheng to make a move.
After thinking for a moment, he said, "That place..."
"Actually, I was the one who created it back then."
"Oh?"
The Demon Sovereign let out a breath and said, "Back then, to escape this curse, I thought of many methods. I even turned my attention to shadows. I tried leaving my shadow behind in this world, bestowing it with Awakening Intelligence and Rousing Spirit, so it would birth another me."
Chen Changsheng frowned slightly.
Then, he heard the Demon Sovereign say, "I did succeed, but for some unknown reason, the shadow didn't birth its own consciousness. Instead, it split away part of my divine sense."
"Such a mishap left me somewhat panicked. After some thought, I sealed the area off and made it a forbidden ground."
The Demon Sovereign's tone suddenly shifted. He looked at Chen Changsheng and said, "And that shadow... is exactly who you used to be."
Chen Changsheng froze at those words. "What did you say?"
The Demon Sovereign said, "I am not joking. That is exactly how you were born. It was also because of your existence that I managed to escape a disaster later on. You died in my place, having your memories wiped clean, having everything washed away."
Chen Changsheng stared at the Demon Sovereign, finding it somewhat hard to believe.
The Demon Sovereign looked at him and said, "To put it strangely, you are, in fact, my shadow."
Hearing this, Chen Changsheng simply asked, "Is there some reason you couldn't say this?"
"You have always struggled to accept certain truths. I was considering whether or not to tell you."
Chen Changsheng shook his head and said, "This Chen is no longer the person he once was."
"That's true."
The Demon Sovereign nodded.
Chen Changsheng stroked his chin and asked, "Then right now, don't you lack a shadow?"
"Correct."
The Demon Sovereign said, "From beginning to end, I have never had a shadow."
"Because my shadow... is already yours."
The Demon Sovereign said, "The Heavenly Dao severed your consciousness and shadow, forging a new physical body. Thus, my shadow ended up beneath your feet."
"That is indeed quite mysterious."
Chen Changsheng furrowed his brow, somewhat unable to grasp the significance of this shadow's existence.
"Indeed."
The Demon Sovereign said, "Even I have not been able to understand the true nature of that shadow."
