To evade the endless pursuit of the Cultivation World's many cultivators, Jiu Fengchun had no choice but to leave the region and travel to the Mortal World. He had always known it to be a lawless land, but it was not entirely devoid of Spiritual Energy.
Wherever there was Spiritual Energy, there would ultimately be Spiritual Veins.
He searched frantically throughout the Mortal World, venturing into those Spiritual Veins time and time again, only to return in disappointment.
There was nothing inside.
They were completely empty. What little Spiritual Energy lingered was incredibly thin, far too sparse to ever satisfy his hunger.
"What should I do..."
Jiu Fengchun fell into a long dilemma. He agonized over whether to linger in the Mortal World and scrape out a meager existence, or return to the Cultivation World to face those countless hunting parties.
After much hesitation, he finally made his choice.
He would simply keep tracking the Spiritual Veins. If he searched long enough, he would eventually find the source of this Spiritual Energy.
He was following a particular Spiritual Vein forward when he suddenly realized the Spiritual Energy around him was growing thicker.
He pressed forward step by step, and a Spirit Spring soon appeared before his eyes.
"A Spirit Spring!!"
Excitement surged in Jiu Fengchun's chest. He hurried forward and began to greedily gulp down the spiritual liquid.
A long-lost feeling of fullness washed over him.
He let out a long sigh of relief and burst into loud laughter.
"Haha, hahaha..."
This meant he could finally rely on this place to survive for the time being.
He laughed like a madman, verging on frenzy.
But right at that moment, the sound of footsteps approached.
Someone seemed to have been drawn in by his laughter.
At that exact moment, Jiu Fengchun was still so immersed in the joy of a full belly that he hadn't spared a single thought for anything else.
When he turned around, he saw a white-haired cultivator standing right behind him, sizing him up.
Zhang Zhengdao stared at the unwiped spiritual liquid lingering on the corners of Jiu Fengchun's mouth and suddenly realized what had happened.
"You drank the spiritual liquid!!"
Jiu Fengchun froze for a second, immediately preparing to flee.
But Zhang Zhengdao's next words rooted him to the spot.
"Do you have a death wish!!"
Zhang Zhengdao rushed forward and hurriedly used his spiritual power to help him dissolve the volatile spiritual liquid.
Yet the instant Zhang Zhengdao injected his Magical Power, it was sucked away and absorbed by Jiu Fengchun.
Jiu Fengchun quickly yanked his hand back and stared at the Daoist before him.
Zhang Zhengdao was equally stunned. He looked at him in surprise and said, "You're actually fine!"
Jiu Fengchun stood up without saying a single word, and in the blink of an eye, he vanished entirely.
Zhang Zhengdao watched him go, completely bewildered.
It was the first time he had ever met such a strange person.
After that, Jiu Fengchun would return every so often to fill his belly at the Spirit Spring.
Zhang Zhengdao noticed his visits every time, though he found Jiu Fengchun's behavior incredibly difficult to understand.
Whenever Jiu Fengchun arrived, Zhang Zhengdao would stand off to the side, quietly watching.
But very few words were ever exchanged between them.
Jiu Fengchun seemed to have tacitly accepted the Daoist's presence. As long as the man didn't try to stop him, he wouldn't cause any trouble.
But as time went on, Jiu Fengchun's appetite grew larger and larger, and the amount of spiritual liquid he needed kept increasing. At first, he only drank for a few quarters of an hour; later, even half an hour wasn't enough to make him full.
Moreover, his visits became far more frequent.
Until one day, the usually silent Zhang Zhengdao finally asked a question.
"You need to rely on the spiritual liquid to stay alive?"
Jiu Fengchun stiffened. After a brief hesitation, he nodded.
Zhang Zhengdao took a step forward, but Jiu Fengchun immediately shrank away to the side like a startled bird.
Seeing this, Zhang Zhengdao stopped in his tracks and simply said, "Don't worry, I mean you no harm. I just don't quite understand why you are like this."
Jiu Fengchun kept his head lowered. He was terrified—terrified that his peaceful coexistence with this Daoist would shatter, casting him right back to his days in the Cultivation World, constantly hunted, constantly fleeing, forced to live in this world like an insect.
This was a hiding place he had worked so hard to find.
Noticing his silence, Zhang Zhengdao asked, "Are we not friends?"
Jiu Fengchun jolted. He slowly raised his head.
"Fri... ends..."
Zhang Zhengdao nodded. "Yes. I have lived in this mountain for untold years and have seen very few people. My Fellow Daoists have all passed away. Now, I suppose it's only you and I who spend time together."
"I consider you a friend."
The word was so utterly foreign to Jiu Fengchun.
He had walked through this world without ever having a single friend. He didn't dare interact with outsiders, terrified that his appetite would scare everyone away. Yet now, the Daoist standing before him was telling him that they were friends.
That night, Jiu Fengchun didn't say another word; he simply fled in a panic.
Zhang Zhengdao made no move to stop him. He still couldn't make sense of Jiu Fengchun's behavior.
It was somewhat baffling.
But it didn't hinder their quiet, unspoken friendship.
Jiu Fengchun still visited frequently afterward, though he had stayed away for a long time immediately following that night.
"Fellow Daoist, have you been busy these past few days?"
Faced with Zhang Zhengdao's question, Jiu Fengchun nodded and answered, "Yes, I-I was busy..."
He stuttered slightly, trying to cover it up.
He was merely trying to hide his massive appetite, terrified that the Daoist would be frightened of him. If that happened, they wouldn't be able to be friends anymore.
Zhang Zhengdao smiled, then reached into his robes and brought out a few pieces of fruit.
"What is this?" Jiu Fengchun asked.
"Fruit from the mountain," Zhang Zhengdao said. "It just grew this year. It's very tasty."
Half-doubting, Jiu Fengchun popped a piece of fruit into his mouth.
The sweet and sour taste left him feeling a bit dazed. It had been a very long time since he had eaten something like this.
Since when, exactly...
Even he couldn't remember clearly.
Zhang Zhengdao smiled and asked, "Fellow Daoist, how is it?"
Jiu Fengchun snapped out of his daze and nodded. "Delicious."
"I have more here."
Zhang Zhengdao brought out a few more pieces of fruit and handed them over.
Jiu Fengchun didn't stand on ceremony, stuffing them right into his mouth. To him, they were exceptionally delicious, bringing back memories of that carefree time he had spent following his Master.
Zhang Zhengdao watched him, feeling a complicated mix of emotions.
He often felt that the Fellow Daoist sitting before him was like a child with little experience of the world—someone who found so many things frightening and terrifying.
"If you like them, Fellow Daoist, I will bring you more next time."
In that moment, Jiu Fengchun seemed to finally understand something. He paused and said, "We... are friends?"
Zhang Zhengdao was taken aback for a second, then smiled and nodded. "That's right."
"We are indeed friends."
A faint smile surfaced on Jiu Fengchun's face—a smile that hadn't been seen in who knew how many years.
And from this point forward, Jiu Fengchun had finally made his very first friend.
He cherished it deeply, terrified that the slightest misstep on his part would cause him to lose this friend.
