Inside Mengpo Hall of the Underworld.

Meng Po brewed her thick soup just as she always did, and the passing souls drank it down one by one.

The Underworld had seen a massive influx of arrivals lately—likely due to the unrest above—leaving long lines winding outside Mengpo Hall. Tu Hu had to remain on high alert. None of these newcomers were good-natured; each thought they were something special, quick to jump out and cause trouble.

He had slaughtered quite a few of them these past few days.

As he watched the line, a figure suddenly approached at a slow pace.

Tu Hu froze for a moment before slowly stepping aside to make way.

The Demon Sovereign had borrowed Chen Changsheng's body and descended here.

After so many years, he was finally seeing Yu Xuan once again.

Yu Xuan looked at him, her demeanor entirely ordinary.

The Demon Sovereign nodded. "I'll have some."

Yu Xuan handed a bowl over, and the Demon Sovereign drained it in one gulp.

He wiped his mouth. "It's not as good as it used to be."

"Make do with it," Yu Xuan said. "With so many people coming through these days, I don't have the time to brew it carefully."

"Why don't you just ask Manyue to give you a couple more helpers?"

"Forget it. We wouldn't get along."

The Demon Sovereign shrugged and dropped the subject.

"If I offered to let you enter Reincarnation," he asked, "would you take it?"

Yu Xuan paused, feigning confusion. "Didn't you say I couldn't enter Reincarnation?"

"It might be possible after some time."

"Oh?"

"There's always a chance," the Demon Sovereign said, "and now that chance has come."

He stared into Yu Xuan's eyes, trying to glean something from them.

Did she really remember nothing?

"What chance?" Yu Xuan asked.

"You don't need to know."

The Demon Sovereign let out a long breath and set down his bowl.

"I'm only asking if you're willing."

Yu Xuan lowered her head, then shook it. "I don't. It's quite nice here."

"Do you know what it's like on the outside?"

"No, and I'm not interested."

Yu Xuan pointed to the people waiting in line. "Look at them. Of these countless souls, which one didn't come from the Mortal World? And how many of them are happy?"

"Of course they aren't happy to be dead."

"It's not just about dying."

Yu Xuan looked at him. "It's their regrets, their remorse, their sorrows. You can go take a look out in the Sand Sea. Countless souls are stalled out there. They hesitate. They wait. Even now, some of them have waited so long they've lost their minds."

"Of all the people who come here from the outside, how many had good lives?"

The Demon Sovereign calmed down upon hearing this. "But wouldn't staying here be even more tedious?"

"I like it this way."

"It can feel a bit boring sometimes," Yu Xuan said, "but at least it keeps me busy. When I'm busy, I forget everything else. It's much better than suffering on the outside."

The Demon Sovereign let out a long breath. "Do you really remember nothing?"

"What?"

Yu Xuan asked in confusion.

The Demon Sovereign paused, then shook his head.

"This isn't up for debate," he said. "When the time comes, I will send you into Reincarnation."

With that, he turned to leave.

But right then, Yu Xuan suddenly spoke up.

"I remember."

The Demon Sovereign stopped in his tracks.

He suddenly turned to look at her.

"What did you say?"

"I said,"

Yu Xuan stepped forward. "I remember."

The Demon Sovereign stared at her, slightly bewildered.

Yu Xuan met his gaze. "I've remembered from the very beginning. So I understand everything you just said... but I truly don't want to leave."

"Then why have you been pretending not to know anything?" the Demon Sovereign asked.

Yu Xuan said,

"Isn't it better not to know?"

The Demon Sovereign shuddered slightly at her words. He opened his mouth, then finally asked, "Do you despise me?"

Yu Xuan shook her head. "I could never despise you, no matter who else I might loathe. Xiao Fanzi, across all these long years, you are the only one left who still remembers me."

"I'm just tired."

Yu Xuan sat down with a soft sigh. "For nearly ten thousand years, I have always been chasing after your footsteps. I kept thinking that I'd finally catch up, but in the end, everything just resets and starts anew. In every lifetime, you are indeed you, yet at the same time, you aren't. Amidst that torment, I kept asking myself—just what kind of person was I really in love with?"

"Did I love the man I first met, or the countless versions of you that followed?"

"I didn't understand."

Yu Xuan shook her head. "And I don't want to try to understand anymore."

Hearing her say this, a myriad of complex emotions surged through the Demon Sovereign's heart.

Even this cold and ruthless man now had a gaze fraught with turmoil.

A moment later, a single tear inexplicably rolled down his cheek.

The Demon Sovereign exhaled softly. "Then just forget about me. Let me send you into Reincarnation. You can live out your future days in peace, lifetime after lifetime, as an ordinary mortal. No one will ever intrude upon your world again."

Yu Xuan shook her head. "I don't want that."

"I'm tired of running. I just want to stay here. Meng Po Soup is a wonderful thing; it lets all these people forget the agony of their past lives. But people like you and me... we can never forget the things that have happened to us."

"My mind simply can't hold anything more."

Yu Xuan breathed a long sigh. "Thousands of years... I've constantly picked things up only to discard them again. I've forgotten so many tedious memories time and time again, yet in the end, I've never truly managed to let go."

The Demon Sovereign couldn't help but close his eyes as he listened.

His throat bobbed, lost in whatever memories were playing through his mind.

"I've disappointed you."

Yu Xuan shook her head. "No. I understand you perfectly, and I know exactly why you've become this way."

"There's no need to waste any more time on my account," she said. "You deserve to finally find release."

A sudden surge of anger seized the Demon Sovereign at her words.

"No!"

His eyes snapped open. "I refuse to submit to this fate! Why must I be born into such agony? Why should I accept such a destiny? Until I drag him down to the earth, I will never rest!"

Yu Xuan paused at his outburst.

She said nothing, but deep down, she actually felt a sense of relief.

This was for the best.

He had his own goals to pursue now; he wouldn't focus all of his thoughts solely on her anymore.

It was a good thing.

Yet, as she thought about it, a bitter feeling welled up inside her.

She understood that the man standing before her was only being driven forward by sheer obsession. He had come here out of nothing but guilt, and he was scheming all these things largely out of hatred.

But that was fine. It was fine...

Yu Xuan lifted her head and said, "Take care."

The Demon Sovereign visibly stiffened at those two words.

Yu Xuan turned back to the stove and resumed brewing her Meng Po Soup.

It was as if, in that fleeting instant, she had forgotten everything once again.
