With half-hearted reluctance, Fu Hongmei entered Donglin Ward.
Panic set in the moment he crossed the threshold. He quickly reined in his aura, not daring to let a single trace leak out, terrified that some demon might see through him.
'They probably can't tell... they can't tell...'
Fu Hongmei consoled himself.
The three of them found an inn. Once they had settled in, Chen Changsheng decided to head out.
"This Chen is stepping out for a while," Chen Changsheng said.
"I will accompany you, Mister," Mo Yuan offered.
"It is nothing important. You should rest."
"I see."
Chen Changsheng stepped out and made his way toward the Donglin Ward's City God Temple.
When was the last time he had visited?
Chen Changsheng could not quite remember.
As he walked, he noticed the streets were sparse. Generation after generation had come and gone, and many of the older residents had long since passed away.
The demons who had taken human form and settled here to live as sons and daughters were still around, as if they truly treated this place as their home.
There were also many more children in the ward now. They roughhoused in the streets, chasing after something in sheer delight.
"Children..."
Chen Changsheng murmured, finding the sight somewhat strange.
Just then, he overheard two women chatting by the roadside.
"A new noodle shop opened in the ward. The food is pretty good, want to go give it a try?"
"No, no, I still have some cloth left to weave."
"Hah, you're so slow. I finished mine days ago."
"How could I ever keep up with you?"
The two women covered their mouths, giggling.
But when they turned their heads, they suddenly spotted a figure in a green robe standing right across the street.
One of the women froze instantly, grabbing her companion's shoulder.
"What is it?"
The other woman followed her gaze toward the gentleman in green, looking perplexed.
Evidently, she did not recognize Chen Changsheng.
Chen Changsheng looked at the terrified woman and remarked, "I hear the cloth in Donglin Ward is quite good."
This out-of-the-blue remark only confused the second woman further.
Frowning, she started, "Who do you think you..."
Before she could finish, her companion stopped her, shaking her head frantically.
Chen Changsheng offered a gentle smile, then turned and walked away.
The terrified woman watched him go, only letting out a long sigh of relief once his figure disappeared around the corner of the alley.
"Sister Qing, who was that?"
Sister Qing was the woman who had just frozen in fear.
Patting her chest, Sister Qing gasped, "He scared me half to death."
"Huh?" her companion blinked in surprise.
"You arrived here later, so there are things you don't know. Just remember this—never, ever offend that man! Trust me on this!"
This Sister Qing was a demon who had lived in the valley manor years ago, taking on human form and residing in Donglin Ward ever since.
The ward bustled with harmonious joy, the faces of passersby brimming with smiles.
However, whenever certain individuals caught sight of Chen Changsheng, they instantly froze in their tracks.
To them, this gentleman in green was a figure of absolute terror.
Chen Changsheng's gaze swept over them one by one. In the hazy depths of his memory, he seemed to recognize a few of the figures.
"Gulp..."
Someone swallowed hard, standing rigidly by the roadside.
Chen Changsheng paid them no mind, continuing his slow stroll forward.
He passed through street after street.
"That lord is here!"
"Should we go notify the City God Lord?"
"There's no time!"
"Who is that?"
Some of the demons who didn't recognize him asked aloud in confusion.
"Don't ask questions!"
Anyone who had lived in Donglin Ward long enough knew a thing or two, and they knew better than to pry into certain matters.
Chen Changsheng felt a bit helpless. He sighed inwardly, 'It seems they are all terrified of me.'
Then again, it made sense.
Back in the valley, he really had terrified that group of demons.
He had originally intended to ask them a few questions, but seeing their terrified expressions, he decided against it. There was no need to scare them further; he could just ask the Badger Demon later.
Still, he had to admit one thing.
The Badger Demon had managed this place exceptionally well.
In the past, most of the families in Donglin Ward had no descendants. Once the older generation passed away, only these demons remained.
Even though the ward was filled with demons, the streets bustled with the atmosphere of mortal life. They chatted and gossiped about weaving cloth and mundane family matters—they seemed more human than actual humans.
This was a good thing, but it was also a bad thing.
By all rights, demons had no place living in human settlements. Yet, if all the demons were gone, Donglin Ward would be incredibly desolate.
He arrived once again at the City God Temple.
The City God Temple of Donglin Ward had very little incense.
Since the majority of the local residents were demons who could not offer incense, the temple lacked much of its divine power.
Chen Changsheng stepped inside.
The interior of the temple was just as deserted. It was likely getting late, and there were no worshippers around.
He walked straight up to the City God Idol.
He raised his head and gazed at the idol.
The moment Chen Changsheng stood in the Main Hall, the idol seemed to awaken.
When the Badger Demon clearly saw who had arrived, he froze in shock.
A plume of green smoke rose before Chen Changsheng's eyes, revealing the Badger Demon. The demon immediately bowed, clasping his hands respectfully. "I did not know Mister Chen was visiting! Please forgive my failure to welcome you properly!"
"There is no need for formalities," Chen Changsheng said. "This Chen is merely passing through."
The Badger Demon raised his head and quickly said, "Please, come this way, Mister Chen."
He hurried to the side hall to fetch tea leaves and brew a pot, attending to every detail of etiquette flawlessly.
"Please, Mister."
Chen Changsheng took a sip of tea and said, "Donglin Ward is doing quite well."
At those words, a chill ran down the Badger Demon's spine.
He was terrified that Chen Changsheng was being sarcastic.
The Badger Demon opened his mouth, stammering, "M—Mister Chen, in the years I have held this post, there has been very little trouble in Donglin Ward. These demons have kept to themselves and caused no mischief. Please, you must believe me!"
Chen Changsheng chuckled. "This Chen means it. The current Donglin Ward is indeed very different. You have done a fine job."
The Badger Demon froze, momentarily stunned.
"You do not blame me, Mister?"
"Blame you for what?"
"Ever since the older generation passed away, the mortals in Donglin Ward dwindled," the Badger Demon explained. "Later on, minor demons from all over began settling down here. In just a little over a decade, this place turned into a Demon Market."
"Ah, you mean that..."
Chen Changsheng thought for a moment before replying, "This Chen saw quite a bit on the walk over here. To be completely honest, without looking closely, This Chen would not have been able to tell that the streets were filled with demons. This Chen would have assumed it was an ordinary market ward. The illusion was so perfect that even This Chen was taken aback for a moment."
The Badger Demon stood off to the side, unsure of how to respond.
However, Chen Changsheng's tone suddenly shifted. "While This Chen does not mind it personally, demons occupying a human ward is ultimately a breach of the rules."
The Badger Demon's heart tightened, instantly realizing his meaning.
His legs gave way, and he dropped to his knees.
"I beg for Mister's guidance!"
Seeing this, Chen Changsheng paused with his teacup halfway to his mouth. "There is no need to kneel. First, explain to This Chen exactly what you were thinking when you allowed Donglin Ward to become like this."
