Chen Changsheng paused and asked, “Last time?”
The child frowned, turned back, then shook his head. “Truly different each time.”
Chen Changsheng asked, “Mountain Lord, when did I ever see you before?”
The child smiled and said, “Beg me, and I’ll tell you.”
“Mountain Lord, please don’t joke around,” Chen Changsheng said.
The child chuckled. “Heh heh, listen up—once this chance is gone, it’s gone forever. In this whole world, there’s no one else but me bold enough to talk about your past.”
Hearing this, Chen Changsheng’s expression became serious. He sat up straight. “How much does the Mountain Lord know?”
“Enough to know some.”
The child added almost without thinking, “Not as much as Mother knew, but definitely more than you.”
“Mother?” Chen Changsheng frowned. “Who is your mother?”
“Just say yes or no—will you beg me?”
Chen Changsheng paused upon hearing this. “What’s the point of this?”
“There is a point!”
The child declared, “You acted so arrogantly last time you were here! I can’t just let that slide—I need to pay you back!”
Chen Changsheng looked confused. He opened his mouth but didn’t know what to say.
Here last time?
That must have been a past life. How could I possibly remember?
After thinking, Chen Changsheng said, “And if I refuse to beg?”
The child gestured broadly. “Door’s over there. Turn right.”
Chen Changsheng sighed softly and asked helplessly, “So… what did I do last time that made you so angry?”
“Trying to trick me into talking, huh?”
The child flopped back, crossing his legs and shaking one foot—looking utterly smug. “Unless you beg, I won’t say a word. Nope. Nuh-uh… Ah~!”
Chen Changsheng gave a tired smile. “Truthfully? You are really… asking for a beating.”
Why does this Mountain Lord seem like such a brat?
“So come on, hit me then!”
The child glared at him defiantly. “Think you’re the only one who can be cocky? I can do it too! Not just be cocky… I can even copy you! Ahem…”
He cleared his throat, pitching his voice deeper: “What if I’m proud?! Brat! Still got baby fluff, dare to shout?! Yell again and I’ll spank your butt red!”
“Tsk-tsk,” the child clicked his tongue. “Look who ended up trapped by me this time? Listen—unless you swallow your pride nicely and call me ‘grandpa’, don’t expect a single word from me!”
He snorted lightly, still shaking his leg arrogantly.
Silence filled the temple for a moment.
The child looked at him. “What? Run out of words?”
Chen Changsheng lifted his head. “Though I don’t know what I did to you in a past life, grievances belong only to the life they happened in. Things from years ago… surely they have nothing to do with me in this life?”
“Just answer! Are you Chen Changsheng or not?!”
“I am this Chen Changsheng. But not that Chen Changsheng.”
The child stood and circled Chen Changsheng slowly, looking him up and down.
“Hoh yo!”
“The nerve—no matter when I see you, you’re always this shameless.”
“Is this how a Lord of the Mountain behaves?”
“Was your argument just now any better?”
“Oh…” Chen Changsheng raised his eyes to meet the child’s. “So the Mountain Lord did notice how unreasonable that was.”
“Huh?”
The child raised an eyebrow. Seeing the faint smile on Chen Changsheng’s face, a sudden bad feeling prickled his skin.
“What do you mean?” the child demanded.
Chen Changsheng replied, “I usually choose to talk things out reasonably. But sometimes… I choose not to.”
As he spoke, he raised two fingers. Golden light flashed in his eyes. Strands of his hair transformed into streaks of gold light. He voiced a Divine Decree:
“Red Lotus Karmic Flame, Stirring Seas to Slay Dragons!”
“Heed My Call: Third Prince Nezha!”
A flash of golden light materialized before Chen Changsheng. A fiery spear held upright, red silk swirling around it, a universe balanced on its tip, eyes blazing with karmic fire.
Chen Changsheng spoke again:
“Three-Eyed God General, Discerning Truth, Shattering Demons!”
“True Lord Erlang of Guan Kou, Descend Here!”
Another figure formed. Three eyes held undeniable authority. He gripped the Three-Pointed Double-Edged Glaive. His voice was deep and resonant: “Yang Jian is here!”
The child before them took two steps back. He glared at Chen Changsheng. “Chen! You fight dirty!”
Chen Changsheng ignored him. He continued his call:
“Thunder General Incarnate, Ascending Past Mortal Body!”
“Heed My Call: Lei Zhenzi!”
With a crack of lightning, Lei Zhenzi appeared. “You called, Master!”
Still, Chen Changsheng didn’t stop:
“Eight Immortals of the Trigrams, Guard the Eight Directions!”
“Gather Here, Eight Immortals! Serve My Will!”
“Lü Dongbin arrives.”
“Zhongli Quan greets the master.”
…
The Eight Immortals stood firm at their positions, their combined gaze settling on the child.
Chen Changsheng stood, stepped forward, and looked down at the child. “Now. Let us discuss this reasonably.”
The child surveyed the assembled figures. He frowned, then snorted coldly. “Think only you can call for backup? I can play that game too!”
The child lifted two fingers and placed them against his chest.
“Dragon Slayer of Dreams, Sword of Wisdom Unmatched!”
“Heed My Call, Celestial Wei Zheng!”
Following the child’s invocation, a figure descended, clutching a glowing Sword of Wisdom.
“Wei Zheng answers,” Wei Zheng murmured softly. Yet, as his eyes took in the figures before him, his brow suddenly creased in confusion.
The child continued drawing forth aid:
“Mystic Blossom Axes, Agile Beyond Compare!”
“Heed My Call, Giant God Spirit General!”
“The Heavenly Kings: Dhritarāshtra of the East! Virūḍhaka of the South! Virūpākṣa of the West! Vaishravaṇa of the North! Descend Here!”
“Zheng…!”
A deep, resonant chord sounded. The four Heavenly Kings appeared, glowering fiercely as they formed a line.
Chen Changsheng blinked, looking genuinely surprised.
The child summoned again:
“Dragon Gods of the Four Great Rivers! Gods of the Yellow River, Yangtze River, Huai River, Ji River! Answer My Call!”
A formidable crowd now stood before them, poised as challengers.
The child exhaled confidently and turned back to Chen Changsheng. “Well? Still want your reasonable talk?”
Chen Changsheng was momentarily speechless, his gaze sweeping over the assembled Immortal Officials. Strangely, the Immortals began glancing uneasily at each other.
“Third Prince Nezha? What are you doing here?”
“Greetings to the Eight Immortals.”
“Four Heavenly Kings… all well?”
“Certainly so. But… what’s this all about?”
The Immortal Officials, who each should have belonged solely to their own summoner, started chatting among themselves.
They exchanged puzzled glances. Chen Changsheng was also taken aback.
The child was left completely dumbfounded.
“Wh-What is happening?! Hey!”
The child yelled out, “Aren’t you all here because I called you?!”
The Giant God Spirit General nearby bent down, sneaking over to the child. He whispered, “Little Master… this time… we must… we must regretfully decline.”
Meanwhile, Third Prince Nezha walked over to Chen Changsheng’s side. They exchanged quiet words. Chen Changsheng’s voice was low but clear: “So… you all actually share the same Heavenly Court?”
Nezha nodded, a hint of apology in his expression.
“It doesn’t matter,” Chen Changsheng said calmly. He lifted his hand. The Immortal Officials he had summoned dissolved back into streaks of golden light, vanishing into the air.
Likewise, the generals and heavenly kings summoned by the Mountain Lord bowed towards him. “Our Lord, we take our leave.”
As the last motes of sacred light faded away, the mountain temple was silent once more. Only the child and Chen Changsheng remained within its ancient walls.
