“The matter with Yun Manor…”
Yun Ze couldn’t help feeling a bit troubled in his heart.
Over the years, Yun Manor had indeed suffered greatly under Qinle Palace’s torment. Most of their savings had been swallowed up, and Qingyuan was almost under new ownership.
Other Immortal Sects, at least mindful of past ties, hadn’t tried to take Qingyuan. Qinle Palace, however, was leaving nothing for them. They were like a frog slow-cooked in warm water, slowly wearing Yun Manor down to nothing.
As for why Qinle Palace hadn’t simply taken over yet?
Chen Changsheng said, “Patriarch Yun, if you’re not busy, we can go now.”
Patriarch Yun was taken aback, then asked, “Not busy at all! But… Mr. Chen, do you need to prepare anything? I also need time to summon some disciples.”
Chen Changsheng thought for a moment, then shook his head. “No need for such trouble. The two of us will go.”
“Just the two of us?”
“Yes.”
“This…”
Patriarch Yun couldn’t help feeling worried.
Chen Changsheng said, “We’ll just talk some sense into them.”
Patriarch Yun immediately asked, “What if they don’t listen to your reasoning?”
“Then we hit them until they listen.”
Patriarch Yun cupped his hands like cheering and said, “You’re truly mighty!”
Chen Changsheng suddenly realized something.
He felt his recent mindset had changed quite a bit.
Back in the day, he hadn’t been so overbearing. Normally, reason came first. But now… in his heart, he wished it wouldn’t.
‘A wavering Dao Heart…’
Chen Changsheng sighed inwardly, then comforted himself:
‘Next time, I’ll fix it.’
With that thought, he followed Patriarch Yun out of Yun Manor.
This trip, naturally, was to ‘talk some sense’.
Along the way, Chen Changsheng asked about Yun Li. Truthfully, he had quite a good impression of that young man.
“Yun Li was traveling the Mortal World before. He rushed back because of the Elder’s matters. After stabilizing the clan for about two years, he plunged into the Cultivation World. These past years, he’s been visiting various Immortal Mountains, seeking knowledge and enlightenment. He comes back occasionally, but leaves again quickly.”
Yun Ze sighed heavily. “That child has changed a lot. He carries many more worries now and doesn’t talk much. Yet, so much weight falls on a junior’s shoulders. In the end… it’s because we elders haven’t measured up. Ah…”
He exhaled, saying, “If you ever meet that child in the future, Senior, please look out for him a bit. Yun Manor would be forever grateful!”
“I will, certainly.”
As they spoke, their gaze landed on an Immortal Mountain standing amidst the Desolate Sea. The mountain wasn’t overly tall but still brushed the clouds.
Immortal Sects often resided on high mountains. The mountains held spirit; their height connected distant energies.
Before they even drew near, the music of qins drifted to their ears. The sounds were chaotic; some brought calm, others muddled the mind. All jumbled together, they grated unpleasantly.
“There lies Qinle Palace.”
“It’s a fine Immortal Mountain.”
Chen Changsheng asked, “Did Yun Manor never consider making this their mountain base?”
Patriarch Yun shook his head with a sigh. “Yun Manor has always been family-centered. The way of an Immortal Mountain… it just wasn’t a fit for us.”
It was the difference between a family clan and a sect organization. Each had their path.
As they approached Qinle Palace, two people blocked their way.
The Cultivators guarding the mountain gate frowned upon seeing Patriarch Yun.
The guardians were two women.
Dressed in pale blue robes, their looks were fair. But when they spoke, their tone was condescending: “Patriarch Yun, have you prepared the tribute?”
Patriarch Yun looked awkward, replying, “Not yet prepared…”
The other woman chuckled lightly. “Then why are you here? Our Palace Master was clear—no bargaining. Not the tiniest bit less!”
“I…”
Patriarch Yun’s face flushed red, but he dared not say more.
Seeing this, Chen Changsheng stepped forward. “Ladies, I wish to see your Palace Master. I am Chen Changsheng. Could you kindly announce my arrival?”
The two gatekeepers looked at Chen Changsheng.
“Where do you Cultivate?”
“I am not from any sect.”
“So, a Rogue Cultivator?”
“You could say so.”
“Our Palace Master does not receive Rogue Cultivators. Without an invitation letter, no entry. Do you have one?”
“I do not.”
“Then, please leave.”
“Also,” one woman glanced at Patriarch Yun, “if you’re here to plead for Yun Manor, best mind your own business.”
Chen Changsheng paused, asking, “Truly no way around it?”
The two women exchanged a look. They were wary of this stranger.
They weren’t stupid enough to be arrogant without knowing his background. The near-destruction of Qinle Palace years ago taught them caution.
Put plainly, it was bullying the weak yet playing it safe.
Not laughable at all—neither the Cultivation World nor the Mortal Realm was any different.
“You wait here.”
One immediately headed into the mountains, presumably to announce their arrival.
The remaining woman asked, “Fellow Daoist, as a Rogue Cultivator, do you at least have a sanctuary?”
“In a way.”
Chen Changsheng said, “My sanctuary is Cloudtop Manor.”
She pondered briefly, clearly unfamiliar with such a place.
Chen Changsheng added, “It’s just where I usually stay—a name I gave it myself. Doubt you’ve heard of it.”
“I see.”
She then asked, “So… this visit, are you here to plead for Yun Manor?”
Chen Changsheng thought for a second, then nodded. “In a sense, yes.”
“Is that so?”
“But I advise you, Fellow Daoist, to stay out of this. This is feud between an Immortal Mountain and Yun Manor. For a Rogue Cultivator like you… getting involved wouldn’t be wise.”
“I am merely here to talk some sense.”
“Talk sense?”
The woman blinked, almost laughing aloud.
She thought him naive. A sectless Rogue Cultivator daring to preach to her Qinle Palace?
Chen Changsheng asked, “Madam, do you somewhat underestimate me?”
She flinched, then composed herself. “N-No, of course not. Go ahead then, Fellow Daoist. Give it your best.”
“Alright.”
He nodded once, then fell silent.
Beside him, Patriarch Yun looked anxious but stayed quiet, waiting.
Quite soon, the sentry who’d left hurried back.
Round trip complete, her attitude had shifted drastically. Seeing Chen Changsheng, she bowed respectfully, saying, “The Palace Master requests your presence!”
Chen Changsheng felt slightly surprised, though mostly indifferent.
He cupped his hands, replying, “Please, lead the way.”
“Mr. Chen, this way, please.”
“My thanks.”
