Xiao Dongxu scratched his head, looking a bit embarrassed as he said, “This matter… it’s a bit of a long story…”

“When I was younger, I was curious about everything. I’d see something, want to learn a bit of it, picking up things here and there. Mixing all that together, I ended up creating all sorts of messy things. Later, my master found out and forbade me from entering the Library Pavilion anymore. He feared that learning too much would affect my Dao Heart.”

“I see,” Chen Changsheng nodded. “That makes sense. The Sect Master’s actions were quite reasonable.”

Xiao Dongxu nodded. “This junior understands clearly. I’ve never blamed my master.”

Chen Changsheng nodded again, then asked, “Speaking of which, have you identified those inscriptions on the formation diagram, Young Friend Xiao?”

“But based on my past understanding of the Ancient Script, I can probably guess the meanings of a few more symbols.”

Chen Changsheng looked curious. “Guess?”

Xiao Dongxu affirmed, “Yes.”

“The ancient texts documenting the Ancient Script also contain some autobiographies. Though incomplete, faint traces can be found. By connecting related concepts, I can infer the meaning of an Ancient Script character.”

Chen Changsheng looked enlightened. This somewhat resembled archaeology. Many archaeologists in his previous life had deciphered oracle bone script by piecing together historical records and writings. It was no simple task.

Then, Xiao Dongxu took out brush and ink, scribbling on a piece of paper nearby.

“From the seven characters I know now, this formation appears to be a seal-type, and a high-level one at that. I checked several seniors’ autobiographies and found records of three more characters in the Qiancao Hall Autobiographical Notes, particularly in the sections describing seal formations.”

“Matching them with the fragmented records about the character ‘huò’ in another text, Fragmentary Scroll of Ancient Scripts, I’m fairly certain this additional character should be ‘yù’—the one at the bottom right of the formation diagram. Its function is likely to denote a space or domain.”

“There’s also…”

Xiao Dongxu continued explaining.

Patriarch Yun sat dumbfounded.

That specific Ancient Script character… he had previously heard about it from a senior at Yizhen Dao Mountain.

What Xiao Dongxu had deduced matched almost exactly with what that senior had described.

Patriarch Yun listened as Young Friend Xiao spoke continuously—logical and well-supported—yet when strung together, he couldn’t grasp a single word of it.

He didn’t understand, but he was deeply shaken.

Chen Changsheng looked at Xiao Dongxu and said, “Young Friend Xiao.”

“Mr. Chen, please speak,” Xiao Dongxu responded.

Chen Changsheng regarded him steadily. “Young Friend Xiao’s understanding of this path seems far deeper than simple knowledge. I suspect you’ve invested significant effort.”

Xiao Dongxu chuckled lightly. “Oh, it’s just some foolish dabbling from my younger years. I never thought it would come in handy one day.”

Chen Changsheng said, “We’ll discuss the formation in a moment. I have a few other questions.”

Xiao Dongxu replied respectfully, “Feel free to ask, Mr. Chen. This junior will answer honestly.”

Chen Changsheng inquired, “Young Friend Xiao, do you believe the Ancient Script path is truly useless?”

Xiao Dongxu pondered for a moment, then shook his head. “To be honest, I don’t think so.”

“I believe the Ancient Script, compared to Formations or Talismans, points directly to the fundamental origin. Used correctly, it should far surpass Formations or Talismans by tenfold, even a hundredfold.”

Chen Changsheng pressed, “It seems you’ve tested this? What were the results?”

Xiao Dongxu sighed softly. “The results were rather… disappointing. The formation could be completed, but something always went wrong. The power unleashed was only about thirty percent of a beginner-level rune formation.”

“To be honest, I was troubled by this problem for a full year in my youth. Logically, the Ancient Script should be the superior version of formation runes and talismans. Yet the end result was far worse. It simply made no sense.”

Xiao Dongxu’s thoughts aligned perfectly with Chen Changsheng’s own. The Ancient Script was the higher level, the more fundamental expression. Yet the supposedly ‘lesser’ paths like Formations and Talismans yielded stronger results. It felt completely backwards.

Chen Changsheng thought for a moment, then asked, “Would you be willing to demonstrate a simple Ancient Script formation, Young Friend Xiao?”

Xiao Dongxu readily agreed. “Of course.”

Saying this, he lifted his brush and began sketching the inscriptions on the paper.

“What I’m drawing now is a small Spirit Gathering Array. Please look closely, Mr. Chen.”

Once completed, Xiao Dongxu activated the array using his own magical power.

Chen Changsheng observed carefully. As the formation took effect, he saw the surrounding spiritual energy begin to gather towards it. However, its effect was indeed rather weak.

Xiao Dongxu sighed. “It’s not as good as even some low-grade small Spirit Gathering Arrays.”

Chen Changsheng meticulously studied the formation’s operation. Subtly, faintly, it seemed he discerned something.

He looked up. “Perhaps allow me to try?”

Xiao Dongxu blinked in surprise, then handed his brush to Chen Changsheng.

Chen Changsheng immediately copied the pattern of the Spirit Gathering Array diagram Xiao Dongxu had drawn.

The copy was largely identical.

Chen Changsheng extended a hand. A wisp of magical power entered the formation, activating it.

After a brief moment of stillness…

The surrounding spiritual energy suddenly surged violently.

Xiao Dongxu was stunned. He watched as the formation on the paper emitted an immense pulling force, voraciously sucking in the surrounding spiritual energy.

In the span of a single breath, all the spiritual energy within the entire hall had gathered densely before them.

Boom!

Suddenly, the paper bearing the diagram burst into flames! The formation shattered instantly. Only the incredibly concentrated spiritual energy lingered, slow to disperse.

Xiao Dongxu stood frozen.

What had just happened… took mere seconds. Two breaths, that’s all. Two breaths, and the hall’s spiritual energy had been emptied!

Xiao Dongxu leapt to his feet!

His heart pounded. This! This was the true power the Ancient Script should command!

But…

“Why?” Xiao Dongxu was utterly perplexed.

The same formation. The same Ancient Script characters. Why had the result been completely different?

Chen Changsheng asked, “Did you ever try using others’ magical power to activate it in your earlier trials, Young Friend Xiao?”

Xiao Dongxu answered, “I did try using a senior brother’s magical power to activate an Ancient Script formation back then. But the results were also poor.”

“I have a hunch now,” Chen Changsheng said, “but we must conduct one more test.”

Xiao Dongxu exclaimed eagerly, “This junior will assist diligently!”

Chen Changsheng drew another Spirit Gathering Array.

“Young Friend Xiao, try activating this formation using your own magical power.”

Xiao Dongxu nodded, channeled his power, and activated the array.

As the formation operated, its strength was identical to the one Xiao Dongxu had drawn earlier.

Xiao Dongxu noted, “It seems it’s not about who drew the Ancient Script.”

Chen Changsheng then had Xiao Dongxu draw a formation himself.

Chen Changsheng sent a wisp of his own magical power towards Xiao Dongxu. “Young Friend Xiao, now try activating your formation using my magical power.”

“Alright.”

Xiao Dongxu received the power. But the instant it touched his fingertips, his mind jolted with shock.

‘So pure!…’
