Immortal Travel of Longevity

Chapter 630: This Is Not a Good Thing

At this point in the conversation, Changchuan suddenly fell into thought.

He grew silent.

He suddenly felt that the men sitting across from him might not truly be his older brother and uncle...

"So my adoptive father was really this amazing..."

Changchuan played along with the conversation, though he had no idea if any of it was true. To him, a single pot of wine wasn't worth much anyway.

Mo Yuan saw right through Changchuan's thoughts with a single glance, but he didn't call him out, simply continuing his tale.

"Back in those days..."

Everything he spoke of was about those bygone days.

Rambling on about these memories, Mo Yuan suddenly felt the passage of time slow down. The days in the Mortal World always seemed to pass much slower than his millennium of cultivation in Jade Wave Lake.

He listened earnestly, not just brushing them off with perfunctory nods.

Mo Yuan spoke tirelessly. He had always been talkative, and his tales were naturally exaggerated; he could ramble on for a very long time over just two or three trivial matters.

Changchuan asked, "How did Uncle Mo meet my adoptive father?"

"About that..."

Mo Yuan thought it over and said, "I have no idea."

He truly couldn't say.

"You have no idea?"

"Yeah, I don't know."

"Then what about you, older brother?"

Chen Changsheng pondered for a moment and said, "I used to frequently buy your adoptive father's wine."

"You must be joking, brother. When my adoptive father was still around, weren't you just a child?"

Chen Changsheng smiled. "I was a child."

Changchuan let out a laugh, paying no mind to Chen Changsheng's seemingly nonsensical words.

They continued to chat idly.

Time slipped away unnoticed until a smear of crimson clouds appeared on the horizon, casting its glow into the tavern.

Even though Changchuan had his doubts, he still chatted with the two men for a long time, drinking himself into a hazy, half-drunk state.

Mo Yuan grinned at him. "You run a tavern, but your tolerance for wine is nowhere near good enough."

"You're wrong about that, Uncle. Selling wine doesn't mean you can hold your liquor. If everyone could drink like you, Uncle, I would have been a wealthy man long ago."

"Hahaha, very true, very true."

Mo Yuan dug into his sleeve, pulled something out, and handed it to Changchuan. "I'm quite fond of you, nephew. It's our first meeting, so it's only right I give you a gift. Here, take it."

Changchuan blinked in surprise. He reached out to accept it, but when he looked at his hand, there was nothing there.

"This..."

"There's nothing here."

Mo Yuan joked, "It's a good thing. You just can't see it."

Changchuan smiled helplessly, not saying much else.

He just assumed this uncle of his was drunk.

Chen Changsheng, however, saw it clearly: it was several strands of fortune-and-blessing qi, guaranteeing him a lifetime of peace, health, and wealth.

The karma tied to such a gift was not something so easily untangled.

"Doesn't that mean that I, as an older brother, should also give a gift?"

Chen Changsheng stroked his chin, momentarily unsure of what to give.

Mo Yuan chimed in, "If Mister Chen doesn't know what to give, why not give him your name?"

"My name?" Chen Changsheng asked, puzzled.

Changchuan was equally confused. "What name?"

Mo Yuan explained, "If you ever run into trouble, you can invoke Mister Chen's name."

Chen Changsheng smiled helplessly. "What kind of gift is that?"

Hearing this, Changchuan couldn't help but chuckle. "From what Uncle is saying, is my brother's name that impressive?"

"Naturally," Mo Yuan said with a laugh. "In this Great Xiang, if you tell the emperor that Mister Chen is your older brother, even he would have to treat you with courtesy."

Changchuan burst into laughter. "Uncle, you're boasting way too much. How could your nephew dare to claim such a name? I wouldn't dare, wouldn't dare at all."

Mo Yuan patted him on the shoulder. "Someday, you can try it and see."

Seeing Mo Yuan act like this, Chen Changsheng couldn't help but shake his head with a sigh. "You... you..."

Mo Yuan chuckled, looking exactly as he had in the past.

Chen Changsheng glanced out at the sky. "Alright, it's getting late. The two of us should be going."

Changchuan stood up. "I'll see you both out."

Mo Yuan waved him off. "No need to see us out. You haven't even finished the wine in your pot yet. Hahaha, we're off!"

Changchuan watched his 'uncle' follow his 'older brother' out of the tavern.

He walked them to the door.

Watching the two highly amusing men, he couldn't help but feel a deep sense of cheerfulness.

Changchuan felt that his 'older brother' might have been telling the truth about some things, but his 'uncle' was definitely spouting nonsense.

Once the two were far away, Changchuan finally muttered, "Where did this uncle come from, and where did this older brother come from..."

He shook his head with a smile, not paying it too much mind.

They had talked a lot and drank a lot this afternoon. Being in good spirits was all that mattered.

Humming a little tune, he set about clearing the table.

By now, there wasn't a trace of drunkenness left in him.

From beginning to end, he had no idea just what kind of extraordinary gift he had received.

...

Mo Yuan walked beside Chen Changsheng.

He smiled. "This nephew is a good man. He's bound to make many genuine friends in the future."

Chen Changsheng glanced at him. "You truly never run out of things to say. He believed me at first, but once you chimed in, he became convinced we were just here to scam free wine. If it were anyone else, they would have kicked us out long ago."

Mo Yuan chuckled. "We still got to drink, didn't we? Besides, it's not like I drank for free."

Chen Changsheng shook his head. "By giving him that fortune-and-blessing qi, this karma can no longer be severed."

"So what?"

Mo Yuan smiled. "If Mister isn't afraid of it, then neither is Mo Yuan."

"You are even worse than the Old Dragon King."

"Mister is too kind. When it comes to being shameless, very few can best me."

"That wasn't a compliment."

They walked out of Qiuyue Fang.

After leaving the district, they returned to the small grave mound beneath the two pine trees.

This time, however, Mo Yuan had brought everything they needed.

He laid out the Sacrificial Meat Offering, poured the wine, burned paper money, and lit the incense.

Mo Yuan smiled at the grave mound. "Old Man Zhang, that adoptive son of yours isn't half bad."

He paused, suddenly feeling a sense of oddity.

For a moment, Mo Yuan couldn't understand why he was talking to a mound of dirt. He opened his mouth, wondering if he had suddenly been struck by some bout of hysteria.

The bones buried within that mound couldn't hear his words.

As a True Dragon, he knew this better than anyone.

Mo Yuan only said that single sentence before falling silent.

Yet he stood before the grave mound, gazing at it for a long while.

Chen Changsheng stood off to the side, watching the blue smoke curl upward from the incense and candles.

Many sentiments seemed to have faded beneath the weight of the passing years, yet the memory of certain people undeniably remained heavy on the heart.

Mo Yuan suddenly called out, "Mister."

Chen Changsheng turned to look at him.

Mo Yuan said, "I used to not understand why Mister would always speak to graves."

"Now I understand."

Chen Changsheng remained silent.

He shook his head with a sigh. "That is not a good thing."

Mo Yuan thought about it, then replied softly.

"Perhaps."
