When Fu Hongmei turned back around, a sudden breeze seemed to blur his vision.
In that blink of an eye, the two figures before him vanished.
As the breeze settled, a streak of golden light drifted down and landed in Fu Hongmei's palm.
The golden light transformed into a Waist Token.
Looking closely, Fu Hongmei saw a character engraved on both the front and the back.
The front read "Mo," and the back read "Cang."
Gripping the Waist Token, he called out, "Brother Mo! Mister Chen! Brother Mo!"
Fu Hongmei looked around in all directions.
But he could find no trace of either of them.
"They have already left."
The demon bailiff stood behind Fu Hongmei, gazing in a certain direction.
Fu Hongmei opened his mouth and said, "My Lord..."
The demon bailiff looked at him. "Could you let me see that Waist Token?"
Fu Hongmei paused for a moment before handing it over.
The demon bailiff took it and gave it a glance. He didn't understand what the Waist Token signified, but after briefly sensing it, he realized the power contained within was formidable—at the very least, it was not something he could withstand.
He handed the Waist Token back to Fu Hongmei.
Fu Hongmei received it with both hands and asked, "Lord demon bailiff, those two friends of mine..."
The demon bailiff replied, "I will report this matter to the City God Lord. In addition, I must ask you to come with me."
Fu Hongmei still hadn't fully regained his senses.
He stood frozen in place.
It felt as if he had suddenly forgotten everything that had just happened, his mind going completely blank.
.
.
Walking along the road.
The sky was full of brilliant starlight; everything in sight radiated the beauty of the vast firmament.
Two figures strolled along the quiet official road.
They were talking.
"Mister, I still don't understand why he charged forward when he values his life so much..."
Chen Changsheng thought about it and gave an answer. "This Chen can't figure it out either."
Mo Yuan was taken aback. "There are things that even Mister cannot figure out?"
Chen Changsheng smiled and said, "Of course there are. Plenty of them, in fact. There are always things in this world that defy reason."
Mo Yuan pondered for a moment before saying, "Could it be that he was just too stupid?"
Chen Changsheng blanked for a second upon hearing this.
He actually felt... that it was somewhat possible.
But so what if he was?
Many years from now, when looking back, both Mo Yuan and Chen Changsheng would remember meeting a rather dim-witted rat demon in Donglin Ward. They had traveled together, and though the encounter was ordinary, it had forged a bond of karma.
Mo Yuan shook his head. "It probably wasn't stupidity, either. People say 'as timid as a mouse,' but perhaps he was just different."
Chen Changsheng nodded with a smile. "Exactly."
Mo Yuan smiled and said, "I hope we meet him again, as long as he doesn't do anything foolish like he did today."
"It would naturally be wonderful if we could meet again."
...
Shangjing City was bustling with incredible liveliness.
With the Investiture of Immortals Assembly approaching, all the stages had now been set up. Many vendors had arrived early to secure spots outside the venue. Although the excitement wasn't quite at the level of the Ghost Festival, it was even grander than a Temple Fair.
Ruyi strolled among the stalls with the Tabby Cat in her arms.
She bought many things in quick succession.
They were all items for daily use.
It was worth mentioning that Ruyi was now wealthy.
The money had been given to her by Ping'an.
Originally, Ruyi was supposed to stay at Ping'an Manor, but it was far too tranquil there. With servants attending to her every need—changing her clothes, combing her hair, taking care of absolutely everything—Ruyi disliked it.
Ping'an noticed this, so he allowed Ruyi to rent a small courtyard outside and sent a maid over. Ruyi had adamantly refused at first, but upon seeing the maid cry so bitterly, she relented and accepted her.
Because of this, Ruyi even scolded Ping'an a few times, saying he had become overbearing just because he was an official now.
In the end, Ping'an could only apologize. In front of his older sister, he didn't dare show the slightest bit of insolence.
Lihua yawned in Ruyi's arms and asked, "Are you done shopping, Ruyi?"
"Almost. I haven't bought you any fish yet."
"I don't want fish today."
Lihua said, "It won't taste good if I eat it every day. It's better to wait a few days between meals; that way, the fish is much more delicious."
"You never used to be like this."
"Mhm... I don't know either."
Having finished their shopping, they returned to the small courtyard.
Lihua offered a reminder, "Ruyi, you should go out less over the next couple of days. There are a lot of demons outside; Lihua saw quite a few today."
"Are there any that Lihua can't beat?"
"Yes, but not many."
Ruyi took this seriously upon hearing it. "Then I really should stay indoors."
The Tabby Cat asked, "Your brother's place is quite nice, Ruyi. Why don't you stay there?"
"I just don't like it very much." Ruyi shook her head. "Having a bunch of people waiting on me is uncomfortable. Did Lihua think it was nice?"
"No," Lihua said. "Too many people petting me. It's so annoying."
"But your brother's place seems to be protected by something. Normally, demons wouldn't dare go inside."
"Huh?"
"Lihua can't really explain it."
The higher an official of the Imperial Court ranked, the more prosperous the qi destiny within their residence became. They received the protection of the nation's fortunes, which warded off evil and secured the household.
Ruyi pondered for a moment before asking, "Could Ping'an have learned some kind of magic?"
Lihua shook her head and said, "No."
"Didn't Lihua just say you couldn't explain it?"
"I do understand a little bit."
"You're making my head spin."
Ruyi asked, "So if I encounter any powerful demons, will I be safe if I hide at Ping'an's place?"
"Logically, yes. I heard Chen the Good Man say before that officials are somewhat different. Maybe that's the reason." Lihua nodded.
"Is that so?" Ruyi asked. "Earlier, a maid at his manor said Ping'an was the Metropolitan Governor. Lihua, what kind of official is a Metropolitan Governor, anyway?"
Lihua looked at Ruyi and said, "How would Lihua know about these things?"
Ruyi stroked her chin, thinking she would find someone to ask later.
This wasn't entirely Ruyi's fault. Before this year, the title of Metropolitan Governor hadn't existed; previously, they had always been referred to as county magistrates. It was only later, to reflect the special status of the Shangjing County magistrate, that the title was changed to Metropolitan Governor.
Ruyi sat in the courtyard and propped up her chin.
Lihua asked, "Ruyi?"
"What is it?"
"Are we going to live here for a long time?"
Ruyi thought about it and said, "Probably..."
She didn't know where else to go anyway.
"Aren't you going to look for Chen the Good Man?"
Ruyi paused, then curled her lip. "I'm not looking for him!"
Lihua blinked, not quite understanding.
She had been dying to find him before, so why had she stopped looking now?
Lihua felt that Ruyi was truly strange sometimes.
Ruyi gave a light harrumph and said, "I'm going to stay right here in Shangjing City forever. Let's see how he likes not being able to find me. It'll infuriate him to death."
Lihua blinked and said, "Chen the Good Man is very good at finding people."
"Then I'll just hide better."
"It's no use."
"Lihua, you're not allowed to speak."
