To Mo Yuan, this was clearly not worth it.
Three hundred years was tantamount to highway robbery.
Yet Mister had agreed to it anyway.
Mo Yuan did not quite understand why Mister would make such a choice. However, as long as it was Mister's decision, it could not be wrong. The only fault lay in Mo Yuan himself for failing to comprehend him.
Night had fallen, and it was not just the Imperial Palace that had grown incomparably quiet.
The streets of Shangjing City were particularly desolate. Ever since the curfew began, its nights rarely saw any bustle. The unlucky ones were naturally the brothels and pleasure houses. Having sat idle for days without earning a single coin, their bitter complaints inevitably filled the air.
Occasionally, familiar officials would pass by downstairs.
Whenever that happened, the madam would send someone out to ask how much longer the curfew would last.
But the answers they received were always inconclusive.
"Calm your anger, Madam. Hasn't there been a string of disappearances lately? With so many people vanishing, the Imperial Court naturally took notice. Once the true culprit is tracked down, the curfew will be lifted."
"If you ask me, it would be a miracle if they found anything. I heard those missing folks ended up in the bellies of demons. I'm afraid there really are evil spirits causing trouble."
"Madam, don't overthink it. Where would there be demons? It's just people talking nonsense."
The brothel girls kept the madam company, chatting late into the night.
They only stopped when the madam finally grew tired and went down to sleep.
Meanwhile, the girl who had been speaking sat by the window, looking out.
Truth be told, this quiet Shangjing City possessed a different kind of appeal.
She gazed down and saw the Night Patrol of the City God Temple occasionally wandering the streets. She had long since grown accustomed to the sight.
The woman was named Chunxiu. Ever since she was possessed by that demon back in Mangxue City, she had gained the ability to see ghosts and spirits. It had startled her at first, but she was now thoroughly used to it.
‘There are quite a few more Patrol Spirits out at night lately...’
Pondering this, she thought, ‘It seems it really is a demon at work.’
However, none of that was her concern. As long as she kept her head down and did not stare at things she shouldn't, she would be fine.
Leaning on the windowsill, Chunxiu let out a long sigh. She glanced downward, but then her brow furrowed.
Down on the street, the Night Patrol was keeping a vigilant watch.
Yet at that very moment, two people strolled down the road. One was dressed in a green scholar's gown, and the other wore black.
When they brushed past the Patrol Spirits, the spirits acted as though they hadn't seen them at all, walking straight past.
Frowning, Chunxiu muttered, "Do the Patrol Spirits not see them? Besides, there's a curfew in effect. How do they dare to be out?"
It was only a softly murmured complaint.
But immediately afterward, the two figures on the street abruptly halted, their gazes shooting straight up toward her.
Startled, Chunxiu was just about to duck out of sight when one of them turned his head, and she froze in place.
Their eyes met for a fleeting second.
Mo Yuan said, "Mister, the aura on this woman is a bit off. It seems to be demonic energy."
Chen Changsheng nodded. "It is indeed demonic energy, but it feels more like the lingering residue left behind by some demon."
Mo Yuan understood. "No wonder she can see us."
Chen Changsheng studied the woman, finding her somewhat familiar. "I feel as though I've seen her somewhere before..."
"Hmm?" Mo Yuan paused and looked at the woman again.
Chunxiu suddenly snapped back to her senses, hastily shrinking back to hide behind the wall.
"It's him..."
Chunxiu remembered him as clearly as day.
Back in Mangxue City, it had been that very man in the green gown who had saved her life.
That had been many years ago.
Parting her lips, Chunxiu peeked out the window once more. Yet for some inexplicable reason, the man's figure had vanished.
"He's gone..."
Chunxiu stared blankly, utterly disbelieving.
"Are you looking for my Mister?"
A voice abruptly rang out from behind her.
Startled, Chunxiu spun around, only to realize that the man in black had somehow appeared inside her room.
She tried to back away, but there was nowhere left to retreat.
Panicking, she hastily dropped to her knees and kowtowed. "Spare my life, Immortal! I did not mean to offend you!"
Mo Yuan glanced at her. "Please raise your head. Let me see your eyes."
Chunxiu tremblingly lifted her head.
Seeing them, Mo Yuan confirmed, "Demonic energy, as I suspected."
"You must frequently see things that ordinary people cannot. My Mister ordered me to come and purge the demonic energy from your eyes, lest it bring a Tribulation upon you."
Hearing this, Chunxiu was slightly stunned.
He had seen through it at a single glance...
Pursing her lips, she asked, "Immortal, must you take away these eyes of mine?"
Mo Yuan asked, "You don't want me to?"
Chunxiu hesitated before replying, "Years ago, I suffered a Tribulation and was saved by an Immortal. By a stroke of fate, I gained these spirit eyes. While they bring me trouble, they have also allowed me to witness so many wondrous things. I cannot help but feel reluctant to part with them."
After hearing her out, Mo Yuan murmured, "Is that so..."
"It seems I made this trip in vain, then."
Mo Yuan waved his hand and turned to leave.
"Wait, Immortal!"
Chunxiu hastily called out to stop him.
Mo Yuan asked, "Is there something else?"
"May I ask who the other Immortal traveling with you is?" Chunxiu asked. "He was the one who saved my life all those years ago. I only have what I do today because of him, yet I've never had the chance to thank him in person."
"Mister's surname is Chen."
Leaving those words behind, Mo Yuan vanished from the room.
Chunxiu's eyes filled with bewilderment, clearly still reeling from the unexpected encounter.
She rushed to the window and leaned out, but the street was completely empty. She hurried downstairs, yet she couldn't find a single trace of them there, either.
Lips parted in a daze, Chunxiu couldn't help but let out a long sigh.
"Are these the methods of an Immortal...?"
"Surnamed Chen..."
She silently etched the name into her memory.
First thing tomorrow morning, she would ask around and find out where this Mister Chen resided.
During the disaster in the Northern Territory back then, it was this Immortal Chen who had saved them. She could not afford to be disrespectful, nor could she fail to express her gratitude.
This matter was of the utmost importance to Chunxiu.
Mo Yuan caught up with Mister Chen.
He then recounted what had just happened.
After hearing him out, Chen Changsheng simply remarked, "If she can put it to good use, it might actually be a wonderful thing."
"But it is demonic energy at the end of the day. I was worried it might draw out something foul," Mo Yuan explained. "So I took it upon myself to leave a protective decree on her. After all, she is someone connected to Mister."
Chen Changsheng smiled helplessly. "This Chen has only met her once."
Mo Yuan offered a genial smile, giving no further explanation.
He believed that anyone acquainted with Mister must share some profound connection with him.
"Speaking of which, she appeared to be a brothel girl, didn't she?"
"It seems so. When This Chen last saw her, she was still in Mangxue City. I never expected her to come to Shangjing."
"Does Mister frequent brothels as well?"
"What are you thinking? This Chen went there to catch a demonic cultivator."
"Oh..."
Mo Yuan drew out the syllable, his demeanor strange.
Chen Changsheng shot him a look. "What else did you think I was doing?"
Mo Yuan chuckled. "Catching a demonic cultivator, of course."
His thoughts had most certainly wandered into the gutter.
