Chen Changsheng looked at the youth, falling into a momentary daze.
"Three copper coins..."
Lord Xu found it completely absurd. He quickly waved his hand. "Go, go, go! I don't have time to fool around with you here!"
Lord Xu shoved the beggar, only to realize he couldn't budge the boy an inch.
"Eh?"
Lord Xu shot him a look, then pushed harder.
Still, the boy remained rooted to the spot.
The beggar glanced at him. "I just want to see the emperor."
"Why, you little—!"
But Chen Changsheng stopped him.
"Lord Xu, why not let This Chen have a word with him?"
Lord Xu swallowed his angry words and immediately plastered on a fawning smile. "Of course, of course. Please go ahead, Mister Chen."
Chen Changsheng took a step forward. Looking at the beggar, he asked, "May This Chen ask the Buddhist name of the old monk who entrusted those to you?"
The beggar eyed him with a frown. "What does that have to do with you?"
"Curiosity," Chen Changsheng replied.
The beggar raised an eyebrow. After a moment's thought, he answered, "Kulao. His Buddhist name was Kulao, and he's already dead."
Chen Changsheng paused at the news. "How did he die?"
"Just like his name. He died of hardship and exhaustion."
In the end, Master Kulao had never managed to meet the emperor. Though he failed to achieve his goal, his arduous journey of ascetic cultivation allowed him to realize his true mind and the true Buddha, passing away peacefully in the waters of Jianghai.
In his own words, the river's currents would carry him all the way west, returning him to his homeland.
"So he has returned..." Chen Changsheng sighed.
Hearing his tone, the Little Beggar couldn't help but ask, "Did you know the old monk?"
Chen Changsheng replied, "We crossed paths once outside of Yuanchuan. Those three copper coins were entrusted to him by This Chen."
The Little Beggar frowned. Shielding the stitched Pouch on his clothes, he snapped, "You're so shameless! Dressed like a proper gentleman, yet you're still coveting a measly three copper coins!"
Chen Changsheng chuckled. "This Chen doesn't want your three copper coins. Besides, those three aren't the original three. Back then, you used the first three to buy a meat bun and two bowls of water. Is that right?"
"You're just spouting mystical non—"
The beggar suddenly froze. Catching himself, he asked, "How did you know..."
"I guessed," Chen Changsheng said with a smile.
A chill gripped the beggar's heart. He took two steps back, his brow furrowing.
After a pause, he said, "The old monk used to say that the Mortal World is full of strange beings and extraordinary people. You know a couple of fortune-telling tricks and want to deceive me, but why go to such lengths?"
"This Chen isn't tricking you," Chen Changsheng said.
The beggar frowned. "Then what are you doing? I have nothing on me except these three copper coins, and you certainly don't seem to lack money."
By now, he was thoroughly on guard.
Chen Changsheng thought about it and replied, "I can only say that destiny brought us together."
The beggar didn't believe a word of this nonsense.
The old monk used to constantly mutter about karma and destiny too, sounding all mystical as if he truly had great abilities. Yet in the end, he had still died of exhaustion on the road.
Weighing his options, the beggar said, "I'm leaving."
Chen Changsheng simply nodded. "As you wish. No one will stop you."
"Even the yamen runners couldn't stop you."
Chen Changsheng's final remark left the beggar feeling uneasy.
He understood that the man in front of him must have seen through something.
The beggar glanced at the surrounding runners, then turned and walked away.
Seeing the Little Beggar drift further away, Lord Xu didn't say anything. After all, he had no right to question his superiors.
Leaving Caishi Market, the Little Beggar breathed a sigh of relief.
He glanced back and muttered, "He's probably someone with real abilities."
Perhaps even more formidable than the old monk.
This Shangjing City truly was a place of crouching tigers, hidden dragons.
But it didn't matter. Even if the Investiture of Immortals Assembly didn't work out, he still had other ways to see the emperor.
The Little Beggar sighed. Patting the three copper coins sewn inside his robes, he said, "Old monk, you've really made me suffer."
Pausing, he added, "But who asked me to owe you a life?"
The old monk had once said this was karma.
But truth be told, it was actually just the Little Beggar's conscience getting the better of him. Otherwise, he would have spent those three copper coins on meat buns long ago.

Because of that bolt of lightning, quite a few underworld deputies and Patrol Spirits soon arrived at the City God Temple.
The Day Patroller and several underworld deputies came to investigate, and eventually, the City God himself hurried over.
"City God Lord, your subordinate has investigated. An evil demon was causing trouble here and was subsequently purged by heavenly punishment."
Understanding dawned in the City God's heart, and he finally felt at ease.
He had thought some Supreme Immortal had visited the Mortal World.
But just as the City God was about to lead his men away, his gaze shifted, and he spotted a familiar face.
"This person..."
Memories surfaced in the City God's mind.
At the end of the Jing dynasty, he had met this Mister before!
The City God hurriedly walked over.
The underworld deputies behind him were slightly bewildered.
"What is the City God Lord doing?"
"Hold your tongue."
The underworld deputies obediently quieted down.
Looking up, Chen Changsheng also saw the figure.
However, the surrounding yamen runners and Lord Xu couldn't see the approaching figures at all; mortal eyes could not perceive ghosts and gods.
Stepping forward, the City God cupped his hands in greeting. "Greetings, Supreme Immortal."
Chen Changsheng smiled warmly and nodded. "Has the City God been well lately?"
"Everything is well," the City God nodded.
Hearing Chen Changsheng suddenly speak out of nowhere, Lord Xu was taken aback. He asked, "Mister Chen, just now..."
"Pay it no mind," Chen Changsheng replied.
Lord Xu opened his mouth to speak but then shut it again.
The City God Lord said, "It has been a long time since Mister Chen visited Shangjing. I wonder if you are free at the moment? This minor god would like to treat Mister Chen to tea."
"Unfortunate timing," Chen Changsheng said. "My business here isn't finished yet."
Hearing this, the City God didn't force the issue. He glanced around and said, "The Investiture of Immortals Assembly. It seems the Human Sovereign asked Mister Chen for help. No wonder..."
Chen Changsheng said, "He was afraid This Chen would grow bored with too much free time."
The City God chuckled. "That does sound like something the Human Sovereign would do."
Chen Changsheng asked, "It sounds like the City God is quite familiar with him?"
The City God nodded. "A few years ago, the Human Sovereign asked a favor of me. We became more acquainted after that."
"I have heard a bit about it," Chen Changsheng said calmly.
The City God paused at his words and asked, "Did the Human Sovereign confess to Mister Chen?"
"He mentioned it in passing. It isn't easy for the Mortal World to produce a well-suited emperor. Thinking about it, it is somewhat a pity."
"Indeed..."
The City God let out a long sigh and said, "This minor god tried to persuade him for a long time, but the Human Sovereign stubbornly insisted. Alas..."
Chen Changsheng said, "Such is the will of Heaven."
The City God paused slightly, not expecting Mister Chen to speak so bluntly.
He didn't dare respond to those words.
Meanwhile, Lord Xu, standing to the side, felt absolute terror surge in his heart.
What had he just heard?
A well-suited emperor...
Were those truly words that could be spoken aloud?
And just now, could it be that Mister Chen was talking to the City God?
This was just too...
