Immortal Travel of Longevity

Chapter 671: This Lower Official Is Not Hungry

Early the next morning, Lord Xu came to the Jingzhaoyin Office to invite Mister Chen.

After yesterday's events, he did not dare neglect the gentleman in the slightest. Thus, he had come directly to the door to invite him personally.

"Lord Xu is too polite," Chen Changsheng said.

"It is this lower official's duty."

"Please board the sedan chair, Mister."

Chen Changsheng looked at the sedan chair and shook his head. "I would rather walk. Do not overthink it, Lord Xu. It is not that This Chen refuses to give you face; I am simply unaccustomed to it."

He was, in truth, somewhat resistant to the idea.

To him, a sedan chair carried by the labor of others shouldn't have anything to do with him in the first place.

Caishi Market wasn't far, so the two proceeded on foot.

Walking amid the morning bustle, Chen Changsheng found himself immersed in the lively atmosphere.

Stoves were set up along the roadside to boil tea. Even during Huaixu, the mornings still held a chill, and for many, a day of toil began with a bowl of this hot tea.

The aroma of steamed buns mingled with the cries of vendors on both sides of the street. People bustled back and forth, their laughter carrying the vibrant breath of city life.

As they walked, the sharp smack of an Attention Block suddenly rang out from a roadside tea house.

Chen Changsheng paused and looked toward the tea house. Turning to Lord Xu, he asked, "Do the storytellers at the tea house arrive this early?"

Lord Xu was a little puzzled but replied anyway, "They always arrive early. The city is generally at its liveliest during the morning and noon hours."

"It seems This Chen has grown a bit lazy," Chen Changsheng said with a self-deprecating chuckle.

"You must be joking, Mister."

Chen Changsheng's gaze passed through the doors of the tea house, settling on the storyteller inside.

Sometimes, he didn't even know what he was expecting.

In the end, there simply weren't that many coincidences in this world.

The storyteller in that tea house was evidently not Cao Fa.

Lord Xu asked, "Did you spot an acquaintance, Mister?"

Chen Changsheng turned back and smiled. "I thought I did."

Lord Xu then asked, "Is Mister Chen's friend a storyteller?"

"Yes."

"We met in Qingshan City years ago," Chen Changsheng said. "I heard he later came to the Capital City to tell stories, but This Chen hasn't seen him since."

"His surname is Cao. Back in Qingshan City, the patrons in the tea house all called him Mister Cao. If Lord Xu ever happens to encounter him and sees he's in difficulty, I hope you might look after him."

Hearing this, Lord Xu's heart leaped. He hurriedly cupped his hands and said, "It would be this lower official's honor."

"Let's go."

The two arrived at Caishi Market.

Chen Changsheng took his seat in the same spot as yesterday.

Letting out a long breath, he waited for people to approach.

Compared to the previous day, today was much more leisurely.

Ultimately, very few came to collect a Waist Token. Those with real ability never followed the rules. Just as Mo Yuan had said, once the Investiture of Immortals Assembly began, people would naturally show up.

Noting the situation, Lord Xu said, "With fewer people today, Mister Chen will suffer less fatigue."

Chen Changsheng said, "Being idle is good too."

"Indeed."

Lord Xu agreed.

Only two or three people showed up the entire morning. Two of them were frauds; naturally, Lord Xu had them beaten with ten cane strokes, leaving them to crawl their way out.

The remaining one was a monkey, and a rather mischievous one at that.

The monkey had transformed into human form. Upon arriving, he leaped straight onto the desk and casually scratched his cheek.

"Hehe."

The monkey let out a laugh, looking at Chen Changsheng. "I heard you can become an Immortal here?"

Chen Changsheng glanced at him and said, "You could say that. But this is just for registration; becoming one still depends on your abilities."

"I have abilities."

The monkey flipped off the desk and landed steadily on his feet.

This startled Lord Xu, making him hurriedly back away two steps.

The monkey clapped his hands, then pulled a staff right out of his ear and twirled it around.

Chen Changsheng paused for a moment at the sight.

The monkey slammed the staff upright onto the ground and asked, "I want to be the Great Sage Equal to Heaven. Can I?"

Chen Changsheng smiled and asked, "Have you read Journey to the West?"

The monkey eagerly stepped forward. "You know it?"

"I do."

Chen Changsheng nodded and said, "However, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven didn't have a good ending."

The monkey raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean, 'no good ending'?"

Chen Changsheng replied, "Haven't you read it?"

The monkey opened his mouth, then mumbled, "I only read a bit of it. Just half the book."

"So that's how it is."

Chen Changsheng said, "When you have time, go to a tea house and listen to the stories. Also, jumping on tables will get you scolded and beaten. This is the Mortal World, and it has mortal rules. It is naturally different from the wild mountains."

The monkey was not incapable of listening to reason. He said, "It's my first time here, so I'm a bit unaccustomed to it. I just have to learn slowly."

"Good."

Chen Changsheng nodded with a smile, then handed a Waist Token over to him.

The monkey grabbed it in his palm, chuckling happily.

Recovering his wits, he looked at Chen Changsheng, awkwardly cupped his hands, and said, "Many thanks."

Chen Changsheng smiled and waved his hand, gesturing that he could leave.

The monkey swaggered away, a grin fixed on his face.

He truly resembled a rascally monkey.

Only then did Lord Xu step forward, asking, "Mister Chen, what exactly was that just now?"

Chen Changsheng said, "A monkey. Quite an interesting one. He read Journey to the West and decided he wants to be the Great Sage Equal to Heaven."

Hearing this, Lord Xu laughed. "Interesting indeed."

Lord Xu genuinely found it amusing.

When noon arrived, Lord Xu asked Mister Chen if he was hungry and was about to send someone to buy food.

Right at that moment.

Someone happened to arrive.

It was an elegantly dressed woman. She carried the scent of musk, wearing light makeup and possessing an enduring charm.

The woman, carrying a food box in her hand, approached them.

Catching a whiff of that musky scent, Lord Xu instantly frowned.

"A brothel woman?"

Chunxiu gave a curtsy. "Chunxiu greets Milord."

She then looked toward Mister Chen and said softly, "Greetings, Mister."

Chen Changsheng recognized her and asked, "What brings you here, Miss?"

Lord Xu had originally wanted to say something, but hearing this, he immediately snapped his mouth shut. It seemed this brothel woman was acquainted with Mister Chen.

Chunxiu said, "Yesterday, Chunxiu asked Yan Zi in the sky and learned that Mister was here. I came specifically to pay my respects and brought some food for Mister. It is only mortal fare; I hope Mister won't disdain it."

Chen Changsheng paused, looked at the food box, and shook his head. "You are too kind, Miss, but there is no need for this food."

Chunxiu said, "I still hope Mister will try it. Back in Mangxue City, it was Mister who saved Chunxiu's life. Chunxiu has never had a chance to repay you."

She kept her head bowed, her eyes holding a trace of pleading.

Chen Changsheng was slightly taken aback. Having no other choice, he accepted it.

"Then, many thanks, Miss."

Hearing this, Chunxiu instantly beamed with joy.

Chunxiu stepped forward, opened the food box, and took out all the dishes inside.

"How could This Chen possibly finish five dishes?"

Chen Changsheng said, "Why don't you and Lord Xu sit down and eat with me?"

Upon hearing this, Lord Xu hurriedly said, "Mister Chen, this lower official will pass. This lower official is not hungry."

"Just a moment ago, Lord Xu was claiming to be hungry."

"This lower official is no longer hungry."
