The Little Beggar planted the incense into the Ritual Cauldron.
He looked back, his gaze landing on the most inconspicuous person in the farce.
"Brother Swallow, please keep an eye on this incense for me. Thanks."
The Little Beggar tossed out the request and, without waiting to see if Yan Qun agreed, let out a yawn and headed for the shore.
Yan Qun paused, watching the youth's retreating figure.
He did not refuse.
Those left behind stared at the forest of incense standing in the cauldron.
"This farce is finally over..."
Long Rong let out a long sigh of relief. Nothing had gone as planned, yet everything had gone smoothly. It was sudden, but acceptable.
The fishing rod in Chen Changsheng's hands twitched.
He pulled the rod, lifting a small cyan fish from the water.
"Mister has caught a fish," Mo Yuan said.
Chen Changsheng said, "It's a small fish, better let it go."
He removed the fishhook from its mouth and tossed it back into the lake.
Then, as he raised his hand—
The incense cauldron suddenly shuddered. Under everyone's watchful eyes, the massive vessel ascended into the sky.
Nine streaks of golden light burst from it, scattering in all directions.
"Bong!"
It sounded like the ringing of a heavy bell.
In that instant, the world trembled.
A moment later, heavy, oppressive clouds rolled into the sea of clouds above.
"A thunder tribulation..."
Yan Qun immediately sensed trouble.
Zhu Wuneng shuddered and cursed, "Damn it!"
"Where did a thunder tribulation come from!"
Tu Hu looked at him and said, "Stupid pig."
Zhu Wuneng paused, then retorted, "Are we supposed to stay here and wait to die?"
They were outsider demons, loathed by the heavens and earth, their bodies still reeking of evil and murderous auras.
They had barely survived the thunder tribulation that fell when the spirit cage shattered. Seeing it again now filled Zhu Wuneng with dread.
Lu Qishan looked at him and asked, "Did you really not expect this when you came?"
Zhu Wuneng blanked for a moment before it dawned on him.
Right...
This Investiture Scroll was fundamentally a communion with the heavens. As escapees from the spirit cage, answering to the heavens and earth would inevitably bring down a thunder tribulation upon them.
Yan Qun stared at the layers of dense clouds.
Muffled thunder rumbled faintly above.
'One bolt, two bolts...'
Yan Qun counted the strikes brewing within the thunderclouds.
He stopped when the tribulation condensed into exactly four bolts.
"Only four strikes?" Yan Qun looked forward.
Hu Shilan looked at him and said, "This thunder tribulation has nothing to do with you. You may leave."
Certain now, Yan Qun cupped his hands in farewell. "I take my leave."
The Two Snow Spirit Maidens looked up.
Curiosity filled Xue Dong's eyes as she questioned her older sister.
Her sister did not answer, instead rushing her away.
Only Old Ox stood there in a daze, entirely oblivious to what was happening.
"Why is it thundering?" Old Ox asked.
Seeing his bewildered state, Hu Shilan decided to lend a hand. She raised her hand, summoning a gust of wind to blow him away.
"Hey, hey, hey!!"
Old Ox panicked, but the wind instantly swept him up and carried him off.
Hu Shilan breathed a sigh of relief and looked up at the sky.
.
.
By this time, the Fish Demon of Lake Mountain Lake had hurried back.
"Mister Chen, the Priest has been properly settled. What is..."
Chen Changsheng looked at him and said, "It's going to thunder."
The Fish Demon paused and followed his gaze.
"A thunder tribulation..."
Beside Chen Changsheng, Qing Tianyou's expression grew grim.
"Mister Chen..."
Chen Changsheng turned to him and said, "This thunder tribulation has nothing to do with you. Put your mind at ease."
Those words settled Qing Tianyou somewhat, but as the muffled thunder rumbled, the memory of the thunder tribulation over the Desolate Sea clawed at his mind, chilling him to the bone.
The Fish Demon asked curiously, "Those four are all Great Demons without exception. Why would they draw a thunder tribulation now? This is bad."
"It's their only chance," Mo Yuan said.
"Their only chance?" The Fish Demon was taken aback.
Mo Yuan saw the situation clearly.
The four demons before them were beings despised by the world. Only by seeking transformation would they have a chance to survive in the future.
Their true purpose for attending the Investiture of Immortals Assembly boiled down to the nature of this particular thunder tribulation.
"By coming to this Investiture of Immortals Assembly, the thunder tribulation they draw will, at worst, only peel off a layer of skin. But if they sit around and wait for a tribulation to strike on its own someday, that lightning won't give them a single moment to breathe."
A strong gale swept through.
Fallen leaves danced wildly in the forest.
Ruyi raised a hand to shield her eyes, her hair whipping around in the heavy wind.
"Rustle, rustle..."
Ping'an stepped forward and said, "Sister, get behind me. Don't let the wind get in your eyes."
Ruyi kicked him.
"Sister, why did you kick me?"
"You can't even fight as well as I can. Get behind me!"
Ping'an rubbed his backside, opening his mouth to argue, "I..."
But he was cut off before he could finish.
"No talking."
"..."
Ping'an sighed and obediently stood behind his sister.
Ruyi stood tall, blocking the wind and flying leaves for Ping'an.
To her, it was nothing more than a light breeze.
"What a huge wind!"
An untimely voice rang out.
Lihua stood on Mo Yu's shoulder, its mouth wide open.
"Ahhh..."
Ruyi looked over and asked, "Silly Lihua, what are you doing?"
Lihua blinked and said, "Lihua is eating the Northwest wind."
After answering, it opened its mouth again to eat the wind.
It smacked its lips and muttered, "Tasteless."
Ruyi smiled helplessly, at a loss for words.
Chen Changsheng stood up and said, "Let's head back. The lightning is going to be fierce."
Ruyi and Ping'an were still mortals, after all.
Moreover, Mo Yu and Jian Shenghua were also present. When the thunder tribulation fell, they would inevitably be caught in the crossfire.
"We're leaving already...?"
Ruyi said, "Isn't it still going on?"
Mo Yuan stood up and dusted himself off, chuckling. "If Miss Ruyi wants to get struck by lightning, you can stay and watch."
Ruyi retorted, "It wouldn't be that coincidental."
"You never know," Mo Yuan said.
Though Ruyi wanted to stick around and watch, both Mister and Brother Mo had said it, so they definitely had their reasons.
"Ping'an!"
"Yeah, I'm here, sister."
"We're going home. The wind is strong ahead, so walk in front and block it for me."
"?"
"Hurry up."
Ping'an didn't quite process it at first.
'What kind of temper does my sister even have...'
Just a moment ago, she was blocking the wind for him, and now she was making him take the front.
"What are you muttering about?"
"I wasn't muttering!"
"Hmph."
The group departed.
Qing Tianyou followed beside Chen Changsheng. Once they moved away from the lake, the oppressive pressure of the thunder tribulation faded, and his anxious heart finally settled.
After calming down a bit, he asked, "Is Mister Chen originally from this realm?"
Chen Changsheng nodded. "That's right."
Qing Tianyou continued, "Then back then in the Demon Domain..."
Chen Changsheng said, "I didn't mention it back then. What you saw was This Chen's External Avatar."
"I see."
Qing Tianyou finally understood.
He had thought it was a matter of resurrection from the dead, but it seemed he had been mistaken.
