Mo Yuan held no disdain for Yan Ruchu. Though he occasionally found the Human Sovereign a bit foolish, upon careful reflection, the man's ability to shoulder burdens and let them go was genuinely admirable.
Mo Yuan answered many of Yan Ruchu's lingering doubts.
As they conversed, Yan Ruchu even asked about a few things he hadn't dared bring up with Mister Chen.
He asked about the world beyond Great Xiang, for instance, and how immortals achieved immortality.
Mo Yuan shared only what Yan Ruchu was permitted to know. As for things a Human Sovereign could not know, he naturally did not breathe a word.
Yan Ruchu let out a long breath and thanked him again.
Just as Mo Yuan was leaving, the emperor added one last request.
"Also, it is somewhat inconvenient for me to move about. Could I trouble Your Excellency to pass a message to the Mister?"
"What message?"
Mo Yuan replied, "I will pass it on to Mister Chen."
"Much obliged."
Mo Yuan nodded, bid his farewells, and departed.
Sitting in the Imperial Study, Yan Ruchu began to cough again. He called for someone to bring in a brazier and warmed himself by the fire, only then feeling a little better.
Soon after, the massive Imperial Palace fell silent beneath the night sky.
.
.
Early the next morning, Chen Changsheng woke up.
He rubbed his head, still a bit groggy.
Come to think of it, it had been a long time since he last got drunk. In high spirits last night, he had inevitably indulged in a few too many cups. Getting drunk on occasion was a rather wondrous feeling.
Later, Mo Yuan told him about Yan Ruchu calling him into the palace the previous night.
They were all minor matters, which Mo Yuan relayed in one go. Chen Changsheng couldn't be bothered to make the trip himself anyway, so this saved him some trouble.
"The matter of the Investiture Scroll..."
It was naturally about the Netherworld Palace and the Yellow Springs. Deceased souls were to be guided by the Netherworld Bureau in the City God Temple into the Yellow Springs, eventually returning to the heavens.
The Yellow Springs had no root or source, acting more like a boundless ocean. It was entirely without order or rule; there was no telling where it would flow.
Yan Ruchu's Investiture Scroll could alter the rules of the City God Temple, but not necessarily those of the Yellow Springs.
In Chen Changsheng's eyes, the Yellow Springs was likely governed by the Heavenly Dao. The possibility of altering its course through the Human Sovereign's Investiture Scroll was actually quite low. However, rules still had to be established first. Otherwise, if the Yellow Springs diverted its course without a prior Investiture Scroll, things would become a chaotic mess.
It was just that this Investiture Scroll...
"I'm afraid it will cause quite a commotion when the time comes," Chen Changsheng muttered.
Mo Yuan asked, "Should we inform him?"
Chen Changsheng thought for a moment before saying, "We should bring it up, lest they be frightened when it happens."
"I'll make another trip," Mo Yuan said.
Chen Changsheng paused. "This Chen will go in person."
"Just leave this minor matter to Mo Yuan. The Mister can just rest."
Seeing him like this, Chen Changsheng found it hard to refuse. Besides, it truly wasn't anything major.
"Very well."
Just as Mo Yuan was about to head out, he caught sight of Lihua playing five-in-a-row with Ruyi in the courtyard.
Feeling his gaze, Lihua blinked.
Mo Yuan tilted his head, gesturing for it to follow.
Lihua tilted its head in confusion.
Mo Yuan smiled helplessly. "Let's go play."
Lihua shook its head. "Lihua wants to play chess with Ruyi."
"You don't want to be a cat god anymore?" Mo Yuan asked.
Lihua immediately perked up. "I do! Of course I do!"
"Then hurry up."
"Coming, coming."
Lihua turned back to Ruyi. "Lihua will be right back. Ruyi isn't allowed to swap Lihua's pieces."
Ruyi shot it a glance. "I know, I know."
"Uh-huh."
Mo Yuan led Lihua out of the Jingzhaoyin Office.
They headed straight for the Imperial Palace.
During today's morning court session, Yan Ruchu was still in the Imperial Court discussing state affairs with the officials. There was nothing major, just some matters requiring final decisions. The mobilization of various ministries and a few other arrangements had to pass through his hands, making it a bit tedious.
Sitting on Mo Yuan's shoulder, Lihua looked toward the great hall. Hearing the clamor inside, it blurted out, "Mo Yuan, Mo Yuan, it's so lively in there!"
Mo Yuan said, "Let's find a place to wait."
Lihua blinked. "Didn't you say we came to find the emperor? Why don't we just go straight in?"
"Because we need to find him in private, of course."
"Oh, oh."
The morning court continued for another half a shichen after Mo Yuan arrived.
Once the morning court concluded, the officials went their separate ways. As they walked out, some looked troubled while others were in high spirits, and a few were even cursing at one another. This was simply the daily routine for the officials.
After leaving the morning court, Yan Ruchu returned to the Imperial Study.
His complexion was exceedingly poor. In his current state, attending court for a shichen or two and sitting for any longer might very well claim his life.
After resting for a moment, he hurriedly called for Physician Wenzhu to bring in a brazier, which finally provided some relief.
While he was resting, the door to the Imperial Study suddenly blew open.
Physician Wenzhu paused in surprise before going to close it.
Yan Ruchu was momentarily taken aback. Glancing over, he saw that Mo Yuan had already entered the room.
"Your Excellency..." Yan Ruchu murmured.
Hearing this, Physician Wenzhu stepped forward and asked, "Who is Your Majesty calling for?"
Yan Ruchu froze.
He looked at Physician Wenzhu, then at Mo Yuan standing before him, and immediately understood.
Yan Ruchu said, "Physician Wen, you may step down. I am fine now, just a little exhausted. I need to rest for a while."
"This commoner will take his leave."
Harboring no suspicions, Physician Wen then departed.
After Physician Wen had left.
Lihua, who had been staring at Yan Ruchu from Mo Yuan's arms, finally spoke up. "So you're the emperor."
Yan Ruchu was startled once more, only just now noticing the cat.
Lihua jumped out of Mo Yuan's arms, scampered over to Yan Ruchu's side, and circled him, looking him up and down.
Yan Ruchu stared right back at it.
Mo Yuan chuckled. "Its name is Lihua. It followed the Mister in the early years."
Yan Ruchu understood and nodded.
Looking at Lihua, he asked, "I wonder what this immortal beast is looking at?"
Lihua tilted its head up and said, "Hmm, an emperor doesn't seem any different at all..."
It seemed somewhat disappointed.
Yan Ruchu asked, "Then what did this immortal beast think an emperor would look like?"
Lihua thought about it. "It's not that you have to be super powerful or anything, but at least... at least you should glow."
"Glow?"
"Yeah, like gold."
Yan Ruchu laughed at this. "The immortal beast jests. Though I am the emperor, I am also but a mortal. How could I glow like gold?"
Lihua smacked its lips and grumbled, "No fun."
Mo Yuan stepped forward. "Lihua, go play to the side for a bit. I have some things to discuss with him."
Lihua nodded and began strolling around the Imperial Study.
Truth be told, Lihua was quite curious about the things in here. It had never seen them before.
After taking a seat, Mo Yuan relayed the Mister's intentions to Yan Ruchu.
"What kind of commotion will it be?" Yan Ruchu asked.
Mo Yuan replied, "There might be a phenomenon in heaven and earth, but it's hard to say for sure."
Yan Ruchu indicated he understood and asked nothing more.
Mo Yuan then asked, "By the way, since the Evil Phoenix was removed, have you found an alternative candidate?"
"Not yet," Yan Ruchu admitted.
"I forgot to mention it yesterday."
Mo Yuan looked over at Lihua, who was wandering around the Imperial Study, and said, "This cat is not bad. You might want to consider it."
