Immortal Travel of Longevity

Chapter 699: Need to Make Some Progress

The incense was thick, its green smoke rising straight into the highest heavens.

High above, the Ritual Cauldron shone like the sun, stark against the vast expanse of heaven and earth.

"By decree, the white fox celestial official shall guard the mountains and rivers to the north and east!"

"By decree, the fierce ox celestial official shall guard the mountains and rivers to the north!"

"By decree, the Forest Deer Immortal Official shall guard the mountains and rivers to the north and west!"

"By decree..."

"By decree, the Lihua celestial official shall guard the mountains and rivers heading south!"

Yan Ruchu took a step forward. His face was pale, his figure swaying slightly.

Seeing this from the city tower, Mo Yuan immediately passed over a stream of azure qi.

Yan Ruchu felt the change but said nothing.

Instead, he stepped forward and continued speaking.

"Heaven establishes temples, and the common people offer their worship! Enjoy the sustenance of incense, quell the chaos of the mountains and rivers, and attain this path of longevity so that all spirits may coexist!"

Nine streaks of golden light rose from the Ritual Cauldron.

Yet this sight did not enter the eyes of mortals; it could only be seen under the Dharma Eye.

Atop the tower, Ruyi paused.

"What did he just shout?"

Ruyi couldn't help but turn to look at Lihua.

Lihua looked back at her and proudly tilted its head up.

Ruyi reached out and grabbed Lihua by the scruff of the neck.

"Hey, hey, hey..."

Lihua struggled a bit but couldn't break free.

Ruyi demanded, "What are you so proud of? What is going on here? Why was your name in there?"

Lihua looked at her, gave a soft huff, and said, "Lihua is a celestial official now. Ruyi can't pick on Lihua anymore."

"Oh, and you can't yell at Lihua either."

"What was the word..."

"Um..."

"Considered disrespectful! Right, disrespectful!"

"I can't pick on you?" Ruyi didn't know whether to laugh or cry. She promptly reached out and rapped her knuckles on Lihua's head.

"Ouch..."

Lihua rubbed its head and said, "You're done for, you're done for. Just you wait, I'll go tell the old emperor to punish you for your crimes."

"Who told you all that?"

"The old emperor told Lihua. He said if anyone bullies me, I should tell him."

Ruyi reached out and pinched its ear, smiling. "Oh, how impressive."

"What are you doing, Ruyi! Ah, ah..."

"Still want to punish me?"

"Put me down!"

"Oh, you've gotten far too full of yourself."

"Lihua was just joking..."

"You didn't sound like you were joking."

Seeing it was a lost cause, Lihua hastily sought help.

"Mo Yuan, Mo Yuan, save Lihua, quick!"

Mo Yuan smiled helplessly and spread his hands to show there was nothing he could do.

Lihua then looked at Mo Yu.

Mo Yu chuckled and looked at Ruyi. "Lihua is just a bit naughty usually, it just likes to make a fuss."

Still held in the air, Lihua turned its head. "Right, right, right. Lihua was just joking."

Only then did Ruyi let it down.

Lihua's paws touched the ground, and it finally felt a bit more at ease.

"You still haven't said how you became this celestial official."

Lihua then explained the whole sequence of events to Ruyi, but the explanation was a jumbled mess, making it somewhat hard to understand.

In the end, Mo Yuan had to explain it for Ruyi to finally understand.

Ruyi scoffed. "So it all comes down to you just wanting some fish to eat."

Lihua blinked. "Is having fish not enough?"

"Good-for-nothing."

"Ruyi is the ambitious one."

"Hm?"

Lihua glanced at Ruyi with some wariness and said, "Lihua didn't say anything, and Ruyi didn't hear anything."

Ruyi was truly driven to laughter by its antics.

"Since when did you get so glib?"

Lihua thought about it; it figured it was probably because it had spent so much time with Ruyi, picking up a few things here and there.

Of course, it couldn't say that out loud.

...

Inside the City God Temple in Shangjing City.

Chen Changsheng was currently sitting opposite the City God, conversing.

The City God looked up, seeing streaks of golden light representing the world's natural laws emerge across the mountains and rivers.

He couldn't help but smile. "With this Investiture Scroll, my duties as City God will be much easier from now on."

Chen Changsheng said, "I'm afraid you'll still be quite busy for a while."

The City God pondered for a moment before realizing what he meant.

It probably wouldn't be all that peaceful; demons were becoming more and more numerous...

The City God took a sip of tea. After a long period of deep thought, he asked, "Is Mister Chen truly going into the Yellow Springs? This is no trifling matter."

Chen Changsheng replied, "I must see it with my own eyes before I can formulate a countermeasure. Moreover, going to take a look today is the safest option."

The City God parted his lips slightly and said, "For you to risk yourself like this is not a wise move."

"This Chen naturally has a way to withdraw safely."

Hearing this, the City God could only nod helplessly. He knew he wouldn't be able to talk him out of it.

The Yellow Springs was a path for the deceased.

And he had never seen anyone come back out of it.

The peril of this trip was easy to imagine.

But he had said what needed to be said. If Mister Chen insisted, there was nothing he could do.

The City God said, "This lesser deity will naturally do my utmost to assist. When the Investiture Scroll takes effect, I shall open the path to the Yellow Springs for you."

"I will have to trouble the City God, then."

Chen Changsheng cupped his hands in gratitude.

"I wouldn't dare, I wouldn't dare."

The City God lowered his hands. He opened his mouth, then added, "Additionally, Xianle is currently in the side hall. Would you like to go and see her...?"

"She's here...?"

Chen Changsheng glanced at the City God, then stood up.

After exiting the main hall, he walked toward the side hall.

A figure peeked out from the doorway of the side hall, the hairpin in her hair swaying gently.

Upon seeing Chen Changsheng approach, she ducked back inside, as if feeling a bit timid.

Chen Changsheng paused at the sight. Shaking his head, he walked in.

Xianle sat obediently on a chair. On the table rested two cups of tea, as if prepared long in advance.

She looked at Chen Changsheng as he walked in, pursed her lips, and said to him, "Come, sit."

Chen Changsheng gave a nod of agreement, then went over and sat down.

"Drink some tea," Xianle added.

Chen Changsheng picked up the teacup, thought for a moment, and said, "I just had a cup with the City God Lord. I don't think I can drink any more."

Xianle seemed a bit dejected upon hearing this, uttering a single word.

"Oh."

Chen Changsheng turned his head to look at her. This girl really was different now.

Her appearance hadn't changed, but her temperament had.

Looking at her now, at the very least, she no longer gave the impression of a little girl ignorant of the ways of the world.

"Have you been well these past few years?" Chen Changsheng asked.

Xianle thought about it and said, "I've been alright. With the City God Lord and my royal brother helping me out, no one dares to bully me. All these years, I've just been quietly focusing on my Cultivation."

Chen Changsheng nodded and said, "Your royal brother has sacrificed a lot. Do not let him down."

Xianle lowered her head upon hearing this and said, "Things have already reached this point, and there is nothing I can do. If I had known, I never would have agreed to let him do this."

Chen Changsheng said, "Xianle is a kind-hearted girl. Just like in the past, when you were in the Library Pavilion, getting indignant on behalf of Sun Wukong."

Xianle blinked. "You still remember that."

"Naturally, I remember," Chen Changsheng chuckled. "Aren't we friends?"

Xianle laughed at that and said, "Right, we are friends."

She felt especially happy because of this.

Chen Changsheng asked, "What are your plans for the future?"

Xianle thought for a moment and said, "The City God Lord says there will be chaos in the Mortal World. I will probably go and help out later."

"That is good." Chen Changsheng nodded, then asked, "Are you confident? The demons and ghosts outside won't be easy to deal with."

Xianle replied, "Not entirely, but I have to go out and gain some experience regardless. I'll never make any progress if I just stay here focusing on my Cultivation all the time."
