After walking out of Ximing City, Chen Changsheng looked back.

It had once been the birthplace of a glorious era, but it was now a declining border town.

The royal capital had long since vanished without a trace.

Its books, too, had been lost to fire in the torrent of history.

Just as he was about to leave, Chen Changsheng hesitated.

"I should leave something here."

Chen Changsheng turned back.

He arrived at the Wine Tavern.

The Wine Tavern was quiet during the day, with hardly any customers around.

Chen Changsheng said, "I figured I shouldn't make this trip for nothing."

Du Aniang asked, "Do you want to take some wine with you?"

Chen Changsheng shook his head. "I just wanted to thank this city for taking care of This Chen."

He walked over and placed the book he had written earlier on a table. It had no title and was only half-finished.

Du Aniang said, "The book you were writing? Why are you leaving it here?"

Chen Changsheng said, "This Chen believes in fate. By leaving this book here, perhaps someone will pick it up one day. They might be able to achieve what This Chen currently cannot."

"What if someone burns it as scrap paper, or uses it to prop up a table leg?"

"Then fate has not yet arrived."

Chen Changsheng replied just like that.

Du Aniang paused for a moment. "Senior really is a strange person."

Chen Changsheng thought about it. "Indeed, a bit strange."

Du Aniang fetched a jug of wine for him to drink on the road.

Chen Changsheng said, "I'll owe you for this jug. Put it on my tab."

Du Aniang shook her head. "I don't keep a ledger. I stopped writing in that thing a long time ago. If I forget, then I forget. It's no good to write in it."

In the end, she couldn't forget what had happened in the Divine Domain. To her, that ledger was like a registry of death. Most of the people whose names had been written in it hadn't survived. From then on, she dropped the habit of keeping accounts.

"Then don't write it down," Chen Changsheng smiled. "This Chen will remember it for you."

Du Aniang nodded. "Alright."

Carrying the jug of wine, Chen Changsheng left just like that. This time, he didn't look back again, simply walking out toward the many wide roads ahead.

As for the book he deemed temporarily useless, it lay quietly on the table in the Wine Tavern. Perhaps one day, a fated person truly would open it.

.

.

The times were bad.

Amidst such chaos of war, the weather itself seemed to no longer favor the world.

The waters at the far reaches of the Tongtian River had receded due to the recent drought.

Many places in the west had not seen a single drop of rain for months. Under the scorching heat, numerous rivers had dried up, and many trees along the roads showed signs of withering away.

By the dry riverbeds, one could faintly see the carcasses of wild beasts, accompanied by a stench of rot.

The nearby houses were completely desolate, devoid of any human presence. Many doors were left wide open to interiors covered in cobwebs, having been abandoned long ago.

Perhaps the residents had all fled for their lives.

Chen Changsheng continued forward, but he suddenly heard a commotion ahead.

It sounded like wailing.

"Let us out!"

"We're begging you, milords!"

"We beg you!"

"Milords, please let us go."

Chen Changsheng walked forward until he saw the scene before him.

A large group of commoners in ragged clothes were kneeling on the ground, begging. Standing before them were several soldiers wielding Long Sabers, their noses and mouths covered.

Chen Changsheng stepped forward and asked, "Sirs, what is the situation here?"

"Get lost!"

A soldier cursed, "If you don't want to die, don't come anywhere near here!"

Chen Changsheng paused for a moment and looked over.

He saw that ahead was a Market Town with nearly a hundred households.

However, a cloud of deathly aura hovered above the village, and the stench of rot could be smelled from afar.

"Plague..."

Chen Changsheng immediately understood what was happening before his eyes.

He hadn't stood there long before a soldier came over to drive him away.

Upon noticing him, a few of the soldiers guarding the area got some ideas.

"He actually dared to come here. What a bold guy."

"Hey, since we're so bored right now, why don't we make him stay?"

"Sounds good to me."

Hearing these words, Chen Changsheng furrowed his brows.

"What are you talking about! What's all the noise!"

A shout rang out, and the soldiers who had been talking instantly shut their mouths.

A burly man walked up, glanced at Chen Changsheng, and said, "Hey, do you have a death wish or something? Why are you still standing here?"

Chen Changsheng said, "This Chen is merely passing through. I will leave shortly."

The soldier nodded. "Then stand further away."

Chen Changsheng asked, "Pardon my intrusion, but are there any doctors coming here?"

The soldier replied, "Where would we get a doctor?"

"Then these people..."

"Just waiting to die."

The soldier said this extremely calmly.

It wasn't a taboo subject.

In this kind of world, there was no need to hide the truth.

Everyone knew what the final outcome would look like.

The soldier sighed softly. "As long as you understand. Forget about them, even we can barely protect ourselves. In times like these, who doesn't want to live?"

Chen Changsheng fell silent.

He looked at the soldier and asked, "Is there a doctor in the village?"

The soldier replied, "There seems to be one, but I'm not too sure. I haven't gone inside to check."

Chen Changsheng took a book from his robes and handed it to the soldier.

"Please pass this book on for me, sir. Anyone will do, just tell them to give it to the doctor in the Market Town."

The soldier flipped it open, took a look, and said, "Oh, a medical book?"

Chen Changsheng said, "Not really, just some insights."

The soldier looked at him, stayed silent for a moment, and said, "You're a good person."

"Alright, I got it. I'll pass it on for you later. Also, be careful traveling alone on the road, don't get snatched up for conscription."

Chen Changsheng was momentarily taken aback, then nodded. "Thank you for the warning."

"Yeah, hurry up and go."

The man urged him to leave quickly.

Chen Changsheng lingered no longer and left.

After he left.

The other soldiers finally spoke up.

"Boss, you're just going to let him go like that?"

"So many people have died already, do you want even more to die? Accumulate some good karma. Stop always trying to drag someone down with you."

The soldiers fell silent. They also knew that their boss had a kind heart.

The man glanced at the medical book in his hands.

Truthfully, he hoped this medical book would be useful. It could not only save the lives of the people in this village but also save their own lives.

He had always believed that the heavens cared for all living things. By doing good deeds and avoiding evil, one would eventually receive good karma.

And so, on that night.

The medical book was delivered into the hands of the doctor in the Market Town.
