Chen Changsheng had no desire to ponder these matters any further. Returning to his room, he lay down and went to sleep.

He felt it was perhaps necessary.

This chaotic world truly needed some stability.

Economic problems were gradually surfacing everywhere. Currency was depreciating, and the common folk no longer had enough money to buy rice and flour. If this continued much longer, massive unrest was bound to erupt.

He suddenly knew what he needed to write.

And so, before the sky even began to brighten, he took a seat at the stone table in the courtyard.

Just as he had while sitting in the Wine Tavern, he completely tuned out the outside world.

When Rong Shili woke up and saw Chen Changsheng writing something, he leaned in for a look.

He even called out, but Chen Changsheng gave not the slightest response.

Seeing this, Rong Shili decided not to disturb him.

Shopkeeper Qi delivered meals early in the morning, but he couldn't get Chen Changsheng's attention, either.

Neither of them interrupted him.

Afterward, at Shopkeeper Qi's suggestion, Rong Shili took a stroll around Longyue City.

It wasn't until the afternoon that Rong Shili and Shopkeeper Qi returned to the small courtyard.

There, they found Chen Changsheng fast asleep beneath a tree.

Rong Shili and Shopkeeper Qi exchanged a glance, somewhat bewildered.

A short while later, Chen Changsheng woke up.

Seeing Shopkeeper Qi there, he said, "Shopkeeper Qi, I'm afraid This Chen cannot stay any longer."

Shopkeeper Qi paused. "Mister is leaving already?"

Chen Changsheng nodded. "Could I trouble you to prepare a horse carriage?"

"A horse carriage is no difficult matter," Shopkeeper Qi said. "I only hoped that Mister Chen could rest in Longyue City for a few more days. Is there some urgent matter?"

Chen Changsheng said, "This Chen would love to sleep for a couple more days, but unfortunately, time waits for no one."

Hearing this, Shopkeeper Qi didn't press the issue.

He then asked when Chen Changsheng planned to depart.

"Tonight."

...

When night fell, Chen Changsheng drove the horse carriage out of Longyue City.

He glanced back, thinking it was a pity he hadn't managed to properly see what Longyue City looked like.

But it didn't matter. There would be plenty of opportunities in the future.

"Hyah!"

Chen Changsheng sat at the front, driving the horse, while Rong Shili sat inside the horse carriage.

He lifted the curtain, looking out at Chen Changsheng. "Where are we headed?"

"Yuanchuan. It should be a few hundred li away."

"Oh..."

That would be a very long journey.

The horse carriage sped along the dark road. With no other people or carriages traveling at night, the path was completely unobstructed.

Somewhat alarmed, Rong Shili called out, "Slow down! Don't shake my old bones apart."

"This is already very slow."

The night was silent as the horse carriage traveled down the pitch-black road. Stones kicked up by the wheels clattered sharply against the sides of the path.

"Hyah!"

In the blink of an eye, dawn broke.

Rong Shili had long since fallen asleep.

Strangely enough, despite the constant bumping of the carriage, he hadn't been woken up. Instead, he had slept exceptionally soundly—a fact that left him rather bewildered.

By the time he woke up, the sky was already a hazy gray.

The horse carriage was moving forward slowly, no longer traveling at the breakneck pace of the night.

Meanwhile, Chen Changsheng sat at the front of the carriage with a book resting on his lap, writing with a brush and paying absolutely no attention to where the horse was going.

Rong Shili was startled by the sight. "Hey, why aren't you holding the reins!"

Chen Changsheng didn't even turn his head. "The horse is smart. It doesn't need This Chen to urge it along."

Rong Shili opened his mouth in disbelief. "Just how smart can it be? You mean to tell me a horse knows where to go?"

Chen Changsheng said, "It knows."

The horse snorted, as if responding to his words.

Rong Shili opened his mouth again. "I really don't understand what you're trying to do. You seem to have a purpose, yet at the same time, you don't. It's like you're just out sightseeing."

Chen Changsheng paused. "You could call it sightseeing."

Rong Shili let out a soft sigh and fell silent.

Chen Changsheng's attention returned to the book in his hands. He wrote slowly, making additions and crossing things out. Who knew how long he had been writing, but he was already more than halfway through its pages.

By now, he had reached the section detailing the relationship between commodity prices and currency, as well as the effects of issuing additional currency. He was almost finished.

There wasn't much to write, and the contents of the book depended entirely on how much Chen Changsheng could still remember. Although the information was fragmented, it would undoubtedly be useful.

The horse continued its slow walk forward.

Eventually, it arrived beside a grassy field. It stopped to take a couple of sips from a rainwater puddle and began grazing.

There was no need for Chen Changsheng to worry about forage or water at all.

Finding the sight quite amusing, Rong Shili remarked, "This horse really is a bit smart."

The grazing horse shot him a side-eye and remained quiet.

Rong Shili raised an eyebrow. "Quite arrogant, too."

Just as he was watching the horse graze, Chen Changsheng called out to him.

Rong Shili turned around. "What is it?"

Chen Changsheng tossed the finished book over to him.

Fumbling, Rong Shili barely managed to catch it.

"You really have no pity for my old bones."

Chen Changsheng said, "For the rest of the journey, you're driving the horse."

Rong Shili paused. "I don't know how to drive a horse."

Chen Changsheng said, "You just need to tell the horse which direction to go."

Rong Shili stared in disbelief. "Are you dreaming? Tell it which direction to go? It's just a beast; do you expect it to understand me?"

"Neigh..."

The horse nudged him from behind.

Stumbling forward, Rong Shili whipped his head around to glare at the animal. "Hey, you beast!"

Hearing that, the horse made to ram him.

Startled, Rong Shili hastily dodged.

Watching this, Chen Changsheng laughed. "You look down on it, but it looks down on you too."

With that, he climbed into the horse carriage to rest.

The horse chased Rong Shili around for a moment before stopping, likely just wanting to give him a good scare.

Panting heavily, Rong Shili gasped, "This old man is really suffering here..."

He pounded his aching lower back, then glanced at the book in his hands.

Looking toward the horse carriage, he asked, "What's written in this book?"

There was no response from inside the horse carriage.

Rong Shili opened the book to take a look.

"Hmm..."

He paused, his gaze turning serious.

He flipped through a few more pages. After carefully reading their contents, he couldn't help but look toward Chen Changsheng.

Rong Shili hurried over and pulled back the curtain.

"You're just going to let me see this?" Rong Shili asked.

Chen Changsheng glanced at him. "Isn't it written to be read?"

Rong Shili opened his mouth, at a complete loss for words.

"Do you have any idea," he began, "just how important this is?"

Chen Changsheng waved a hand dismissively. "No idea."

"You..."

"Just focus on driving the horse. This Chen is going to rest now."
