The Plump Girl thought about it for a moment before letting it go, figuring the two of them were just spouting nonsense.
Chen Changsheng and the Old Dragon King chatted idly, exchanging a word here and there.
The other people in the cell, however, were growing annoyed. It was late, and since they hadn't been given enough to eat, they naturally wanted extra sleep. Between their hunger and the terrifying thunderstorm outside, someone in the back eventually spoke up, asking the two of them to keep it down.
The Old Dragon King wasn't having any of it. He glared at them and snapped, "What does my talking have to do with you?"
That imposing presence instantly terrified the captives.
He was the Old Dragon King of the Tongtian River, after all. Just a sliver of his aura was enough to leave ordinary mortals trembling in fear.
Ultimately, Chen Changsheng stopped him. "Let's go outside and talk," he said.
The Old Dragon King looked reluctant. "It's perfectly fine in here. Why go outside?"
Chen Changsheng didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "You have quite the temper, but you should at least be somewhat reasonable, shouldn't you?"
"Fine, fine, fine, we'll talk outside."
Seeing the two of them stand up, the Plump Girl couldn't help but ask in confusion, "Where are you going?"
Chen Changsheng smiled. "Outside to talk, so we don't disturb your sleep."
The Plump Girl stared blankly. "But..."
"How are you going to get out?"
Just as she spoke, the Old Dragon King stepped forward. With a gentle pull, the cell door swung open.
This left everyone in the cell stunned.
Chen Changsheng waved a hand and followed the Old Dragon King out.
Several pairs of eyes inside the cell stared at the open doorway, but no one dared to step forward.
"How did the door open..."
The more they looked, the more they wanted to follow them, but they were terrified of being caught by the bandits. If that happened, it would truly be a dead end.
They looked at each other. Even as Chen Changsheng reached back and casually pulled the door shut, not a single person made a move.
The Plump Girl was completely dumbfounded.
But she didn't dare go out either.
Chen Changsheng and the Old Dragon King stood outside. A light rain was still falling.
The Old Dragon King asked about Chen Changsheng's plans, evidently curious as to why he insisted on staying in this cell.
Chen Changsheng explained the gist of what he intended to do.
The Old Dragon King looked surprised. "You're having a sudden bout of kindness?"
Chen Changsheng smiled. "Is there any reason I shouldn't?"
The Old Dragon King opened his mouth, then sighed. "I really don't understand you. Other cultivators try to avoid the karma of the Mortal World at all costs, yet you insist on throwing yourself right into it."
"Naturally, there is a reason."
Chen Changsheng smiled. "Debts of gratitude must be repaid, not to mention This Chen really couldn't stand by and just watch."
The Old Dragon King replied, "It's all up to you. You are Chen Changsheng, after all. Who could stop you from doing whatever you want?"
The two of them chatted outside for a long time.
After about two or three shichen, they returned to the cell.
This left the other captives even more dumbfounded.
The Plump Girl exclaimed, "You actually came back?"
Chen Changsheng brushed the dust off the ground and said, "Time to sleep."
The Plump Girl shook his arm. "You guys..."
Chen Changsheng turned to look at her. "Just get some rest."
The Plump Girl opened her mouth, but ultimately couldn't bring herself to voice her questions.
They had only been back for about half a shichen when someone crept forward and tried to open the door!
But the door absolutely refused to budge.
"Why won't it open?"
The man looked utterly bewildered.
He had finally worked up the courage to try to escape.
Yet the door remained shut.
The Old Dragon King chuckled. "You want to go out?"
The man opened his mouth. "Could you..."
The Old Dragon King raised a hand and waved it.
Immediately, a creak rang out, and the door swung open just like that.
Everyone present widened their eyes in disbelief.
The most astonished of all was the man standing at the doorway.
His jaw dropped. The door was open, yet he just stood there, hesitating.
The Old Dragon King blinked. "Why aren't you leaving?"
The man panted, holding a chess piece, unable to decide.
A moment later, however, he closed the door.
Lowering his head, he walked back into the cell, found an empty corner, and sat down. From then on, he didn't say a single word.
Fear! Terror! It had forced him to stay inside.
The Plump Girl sat beside Chen Changsheng, hugging her knees. She asked softly, "You guys are Immortals, aren't you?"
Chen Changsheng turned his head and looked at her. "What makes us look like Immortals?"
The Plump Girl blinked. "You just do."
Chen Changsheng shook his head. "Well, we aren't."
"Oh..."
The Plump Girl fell silent for a while, but then suddenly asked, "Will you really save us?"
Chen Changsheng blinked. "You believe I will?"
The Plump Girl paused for a moment, then nodded firmly. "I do."
Chen Changsheng smiled. "No matter the circumstances, you shouldn't entrust your life to others. It isn't wise."
The Plump Girl said quietly, "I don't have a choice. I just want to live a little longer. There's still so much food I haven't tried."
"Do you live just to eat?"
"Not exactly, I just really like eating. I'm just a maid who was sold to a manor. I don't have any grand ambitions, so every extra bite I eat is a win."
Chen Changsheng nodded. "That's perfectly fine."
"Go to sleep. Whatever happens, we'll talk about it tomorrow."
The Plump Girl nodded and curled up in the corner to lie down.
It was cold from the rain, and curling up like that kept her a bit warmer.
However, very few people could fall asleep that night.
They weren't sure if these two were telling the truth, but they still clung to the hope.
Early the next morning, the bandits sent someone to deliver food.
However, halfway through the delivery, shouts rang out from outside.
Mixed in with the shouts were a few miserable screams.
"Hm?"
The Old Dragon King looked somewhat surprised.
The bandit delivering food immediately ran outside, not forgetting to lock the door as he left.
The Old Dragon King glanced at Chen Changsheng and asked, "Did you arrange this?"
Chen Changsheng shook his head. "I certainly didn't."
The Plump Girl asked, "What's happening outside?"
Chen Changsheng and the Old Dragon King exchanged a look.
Chen Changsheng stood up. "I'll go take a look."
"I'll come too."
The two of them just strolled out casually.
The captives in the cell looked at each other, but no one dared to move.
Chen Changsheng stood at the doorway, gazing out at the mountain stronghold.
In the distance, they saw quite a few people charging up the mountain with saber and sword in hand. Judging by their movements, their martial arts weren't weak. Slaying these bandits seemed as easy as slaughtering chickens.
Miserable screams rose and fell, and fresh blood dyed the green trees of the mountain ravine red.
"People of the jianghu..." the Old Dragon King muttered.
Chen Changsheng kept his eyes on the fight. "Their martial arts are all quite strong, and they're highly organized."
"They must belong to some sect."
"Do you know them?"
The Old Dragon King shook his head. "How would I know? I don't pay attention to these things at all."
Chen Changsheng nodded. "It's a completely one-sided fight."
Every strike of saber and sword went straight for the vitals.
In a matter of moments, the bandits' corpses littered the ground.
The Old Dragon King chuckled. "Perfect. It saves you the trouble."
