"What about before? What was your previous name?"

At Chen Changsheng's question, the Plump Girl suddenly froze. She stopped eating her noodles and lowered her head in thought.

After a long while, she looked up and said, "Master, I can't remember..."

"You can't remember?" Chen Changsheng paused for a moment.

The Plump Girl nodded. "I was sold to the estate when I was very young, so I don't remember much about my childhood. All I know is that my surname is Yu, but as for my given name, I just..."

She shook her head, truly unable to recall it.

"And after you arrived at the estate, your parents never came looking for you?"

"A sold daughter is like spilled water. They never came looking."

"Is that so..."

The Plump Girl said, "Master, pick a new name for me. I don't like my old one."

Chen Changsheng thought for a moment. "What kind of name do you want? This Chen picks names somewhat at random."

The Plump Girl paused at that. Suddenly, she said, "Then just call me Random."

"Ah?"

"I think it sounds nice."

Chen Changsheng didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "We can't be that random."

The Plump Girl pouted. She paused and thought for another moment.

"Then what about Yangchun? What do you think, Master?"

"Like Yangchun Noodles?" Chen Changsheng asked.

The Plump Girl nodded. "Yes, they're delicious."

It was the best thing she had eaten in a long time, and the only thing that had actually made her full.

Before Chen Changsheng could respond, the Plump Girl decided, "I'll be Yangchun."

She wasn't a stubborn girl. From her time in the prison cell to her release into the outside world, she had always been entirely submissive, but she was surprisingly obstinate about this one matter.

Seeing this, Chen Changsheng understood. He nodded and said, "Then Yangchun it is."

The Plump Girl nodded, a smile breaking across her face, and lowered her head to continue eating.

Chen Changsheng asked, "Are two bowls of noodles enough to fill you up?"

"They're enough, they're enough."

"That's good."

For the rest of the journey, Chen Changsheng had a plump little maidservant named Yangchun following behind him.

She was quite bold in some ways, eagerly stealing glances at anything novel she spotted on the road. Yet she was equally timid in others—she didn't dare spend much of her Master's money, and even when she was hungry, she wouldn't say a word.

To Yangchun, she was only hungry when her Master was hungry.

Still, she counted herself lucky to have met such a good Master.

She had a big appetite, needing three times Chen Changsheng's portion to feel full. Though her Master had warned her she would go hungry following him, she had actually eaten her fill the entire way.

This made Yangchun profoundly grateful.

It also made her all the more anxious to find a place to settle down.

Yangchun didn't want to inconvenience her Master any longer.

She knew she was just a burden. She couldn't help him with anything, yet she ate so much.

As for Chen Changsheng, he didn't really have anything keeping him busy.

He traveled at a leisurely pace, occasionally sitting on the ground to write.

The sight Yangchun saw most often was her Master sitting in a quiet spot with a book in his lap, writing with a brush. She had no idea what he was writing.

"Master must be a scholar," Yangchun said.

Chen Changsheng shook his head. "You're wrong about that. This Chen is merely a copyist."

Yangchun blinked in surprise. "A copyist?"

Chen Changsheng nodded. "Just as the name implies, I copy down the things I've read to use them."

Yangchun blinked. "Is there something wrong with copying?"

"Of course it's wrong," Chen Changsheng chuckled. "But fortunately, they won't come crusading against This Chen."

Yangchun thought about it, then shook her head. "Yangchun doesn't understand."

"That's fine."

Yangchun sat off to the side and asked, "Then what is Master copying?"

Chen Changsheng replied, "Some insights regarding the law."

Yangchun immediately perked up. "Master, I know that one! If you break the law, you get thrown into prison!"

"Correct."

"Why are you writing about that, Master?"

"Because the law has been diluted. Without it, many things in this world lose their bottom line, and chaos follows."

Yangchun blinked. "Like those bandits who captured us before?"

"Exactly."

"So, Master is writing this to rid the world of bandits?"

Chen Changsheng smiled. "It's more than just that."

"The insights in this book act more as a warning. If a nation has no laws to restrain its people, or if the law becomes nothing more than empty words on a page, the consequences will be dire."

Yangchun was curious about her Master's words, but such grandiose concepts were difficult for her to grasp.

Because she couldn't understand what any of this had to do with him.

"Master is going to do something great," Yangchun declared.

"Ah?"

"It's true," Yangchun insisted. "Listening to Master speak makes Yangchun feel that Master will definitely become an incredible person."

Chen Changsheng shook his head. "I wouldn't say that. I just write these things when I'm bored. It's unknown if they will actually serve any purpose in the end. The affairs of this world are often baffling. Once, a man used his own death to try and awaken his sovereign, yet in the end, his memorial was never even opened. It is a sorrowful thing, but nothing could be done."

"So, Yangchun, you must understand that some things should be taken lightly. Just because you have a goal doesn't mean you absolutely must achieve it. Just do what you ought to do. Whether it yields results isn't important; what matters is having a clear conscience."

Listening to this, Yangchun was quite confused. She thought about it for a long time, then finally opened her mouth.

"Master..."

"Yangchun didn't really understand."

Chen Changsheng smiled and said, "Whether you understand isn't actually important."

Yangchun grew even more bewildered. "Then what is important?"

Chen Changsheng smiled. "Figuring out where to find food today is what's important, otherwise the two of us will go hungry."

"Ah!"

Yangchun snapped back to reality. "Master, we need to get moving."

Chen Changsheng let out a hearty laugh. He put away his book, stood up, and walked down the path ahead.

Yangchun followed silently behind him, her mind still turning over the things her Master had just said.

She was even more curious about exactly what kind of person her Master was.

It seemed like her Master was very formidable, but at the same time, it was hard to tell.

He always made her feel a little strange, though she couldn't quite put her finger on why.

But none of that mattered.

All she knew was that her Master was an exceptionally good person.

Along the way, Chen Changsheng also experienced how different this region was.

Compared to the Northwest, this region was indeed much more stable.

It was no wonder the King of Wei was able to establish a firm foothold here. By securing the people's livelihood, he attracted the populace. Commoners from the fiefdoms of the various princes were all migrating here, and once the population grew, many problems naturally resolved themselves.

It was a good place.
