After flatly refusing Cao Fa and Master Jin San, Zhishu walked on.
She walked slowly, her body trembling slightly.
Master Jin San gazed at her retreating back, falling into a daze for a moment.
Cao Fa's lips quivered slightly as he asked, "Is it really not her...?"
Master Jin San paused. He knew, yet he didn't.
It seemed a very difficult question to answer.
"No..."
Yet Master Jin San had hesitated for a long time before giving that answer.
He figured that perhaps Zhishu was also enduring unspeakable suffering.
It was better to leave it at that and forget.
Her figure drifted further and further away.
The underworld deputy's gaze fell on Zhishu. He could faintly hear soft sobbing, but in the end, he didn't offer a single word of comfort.
He escorted Zhishu all the way to Chuanfeng Alley.
Zhishu's eyes were slightly red, a faint flush still lingering on her face. She let out a long breath and said, "Sorry to trouble you, Sir Deputy."
The underworld deputy cupped his hands. "Just doing my duty."
He paused for a moment and added, "Additionally, I hope you consider the matter of reincarnation carefully, Miss Guan. Ultimately, departed souls shouldn't remain in the Mortal World."
Zhishu nodded slightly to show she understood.
The underworld deputy nodded in acknowledgment before turning and striding away.
Zhishu let out a breath and walked into the alley.
Just as she was about to go inside, she heard a commotion from the courtyard across the way.
"Drink!! Hahaha!"
The voice was incredibly familiar; Zhishu knew exactly who it was the moment she heard it.
Aside from the Little Miss, it couldn't be anyone else.
Zhishu walked over to Mister Chen's door and reached out to knock.
Inside, Chen Changsheng and Yu Hongjin, who were in the middle of drinking, both froze.
Their eyes turned toward the door in unison.
"Oh no!"
Yu Hongjin suddenly realized what was happening. "Sister Zhishu is back."
Chen Changsheng laughed. "You're going to get scolded."
Panic set in for Yu Hongjin. "No, no, no, let me hide, let me hide."
Right then, Zhishu's voice came from outside.
"Has Mister Chen gone to rest?"
Yu Hongjin grew even more frantic, looking around the courtyard in search of a hiding spot.
She paused, looking back at Chen Changsheng, and put a finger to her lips, shushing him to stay quiet.
At the same time, she kept her eyes glued to the door, nervous beyond belief.
Chen Changsheng whispered, "You weren't like this when you brought the wine over."
"Shh! Shhh!!"
Yu Hongjin was terrified, deathly afraid that Zhishu would hear them from outside.
"Mister Chen?"
Zhishu called out again.
But there was no response from inside.
Zhishu hesitated. She considered knocking again but ultimately decided against it, not even calling out a third time.
After a moment of thought, she pretended to return to her own courtyard, opening and closing her own door.
In reality, she stood right outside Mister Chen's door and waited.
She knew the Little Miss better than anyone.
Yu Hongjin crept to the door and listened carefully to the sounds outside.
Hearing the sound of the door closing, she finally let out a sigh of relief.
"Phew..."
Yu Hongjin breathed easy, but in the very next moment, a hand suddenly clapped her on the shoulder.
"You scared me to death." Yu Hongjin patted her chest.
Chen Changsheng glanced at her. "Didn't you say you weren't afraid of being scolded?"
Yu Hongjin smacked her lips. "When did I say I was afraid? How could I possibly be afraid?"
"Then what was that just now?"
As Chen Changsheng was about to continue, Yu Hongjin stopped him. "Keep your voice down. The courtyards are so close together. If Sister Zhishu hears us, it'll be bad."
Chen Changsheng chuckled. "Who knows, maybe Zhishu is waiting for you right outside the door. Besides, you're going to get scolded anyway. It's just a matter of sooner or later."
Yu Hongjin rolled her eyes at him. "You don't understand, do you? If I get caught now, I'll definitely be scolded harshly. If I wait a while for Sister Zhishu to calm down before going back, I'll just get a light lecture at most."
Yet, every single word of this was heard loud and clear by Zhishu outside the door.
Zhishu smiled helplessly, thinking to herself that the Little Miss truly was a clever little imp.
"Wait a minute, let me take another look."
Yu Hongjin signaled for Chen Changsheng to stay quiet.
Then she stepped forward, unlatched the door, and pulled it open carefully, terrified of making a single sound.
She poked her head out through the crack.
No one on the left.
She looked to the right.
Only to see a hand suddenly reach toward her.
Zhishu grabbed Yu Hongjin by the back of her collar.
"Hey, hey, hey..."
Yu Hongjin was hoisted up by Zhishu.
She froze. Only when she opened her eyes did she get a clear look at the person in front of her.
"S-Sister Zhishu..."
The moment Yu Hongjin opened her mouth, a heavy stench of alcohol wafted out.
Standing by the door, Chen Changsheng couldn't help but laugh out loud at the sight of Yu Hongjin being dangled in the air.
Zhishu looked at Mister Chen. "I'm sorry for disturbing you, Mister Chen."
Chen Changsheng waved a hand dismissively. "It's fine. This girl has had quite a bit to drink. She needs to be taught a proper lesson."
Hearing this, Yu Hongjin's eyes went wide as she stared at Chen Changsheng in pure disbelief.
"!!"
She pointed an accusing finger at him. "Y-you! You're selling me out!"
Zhishu lightly swatted the back of Yu Hongjin's head. "Do not be rude to Mister."
Yu Hongjin rubbed her head, looking utterly wronged.
Zhishu set her down and frowned. "Reeking of alcohol again. When will you ever quit drinking, Little Miss? If Miss finds out, she'll be angry again."
Yu Hongjin lowered her head, not daring to speak.
Zhishu sighed, then looked at Mister Chen. "Apologies for the intrusion. Please do not take offense, Mister."
Chen Changsheng assured her it was no trouble, and Zhishu then led Yu Hongjin back to their own courtyard.
Yu Hongjin trudged back into the courtyard with her head hung low.
She received quite a scolding from Zhishu.
For over a decade now, she had always been scolded like a child.
But it was her own fault for never changing.
Zhishu let out a sigh and smoothed out the hems and cuffs of Yu Hongjin's clothes. "Little Miss, you really can't keep drinking like this. What if you get drunk and no one knows, and something happens to you?"
Yu Hongjin blinked. "Sister Zhishu, how could anything happen to me?"
Zhishu paused, suddenly remembering that Yu Hongjin was a demon.
"Just in case."
"Don't I have you and Sister Yun around?"
Zhishu hesitated before saying, "Miss is getting older too; she's not as spry as she used to be. Miss and I..."
She let out a breath. "How could Miss and I possibly stay by your side forever, Little Miss?"
Hearing this, Yu Hongjin froze. She looked up at Zhishu. "Are you leaving, Sister Zhishu?"
Zhishu reached out and gently patted her head. "I'm not leaving. Don't overthink it, Little Miss. Alright, hurry back and get some sleep. Don't let Miss find out, or you'll get scolded again."
Yu Hongjin opened her mouth to say something, but in the end, Zhishu pushed her into the room and shut the door behind her.
She stood blankly by the door. As if finally realizing something, a sudden wave of panic washed over her.
