That night, Ruyi left the courtyard.
In the end, she simply couldn't resist her curiosity.
Prince Wei's Manor wasn't far. Ruyi had seen it before, and a brief walk brought her to its gates.
A man stood at the entrance. He was a rather ugly elder with a pockmarked face, grasping a length of Jade Bamboo and wearing straw sandals. Seeing Ruyi, he flashed a wide grin. "Welcome, Spear Immortal. The prince has been waiting inside for quite some time."
The old man's voice was hoarse and somewhat weak.
Ruyi gave him a look. "Your disguise leaves a bit to be desired. That fragrance on you feels completely out of place."
The old man paused, then said, "Miss Ruyi, it's been a long time."
His voice softened, shifting into the smooth, elegant tone of a young nobleman.
Ruyi blinked. "How did you end up running errands at Prince Wei's Manor?"
Ruyi chuckled. "I told you your luck would run out eventually."
Xiao Shisan waved a hand. "Hurry in."
Ruyi smiled. "I'll catch up with you later."
Xiao Shisan nodded and said no more.
Ruyi entered the gates, and someone immediately guided her to a pavilion in the rear courtyard of Prince Wei's Manor.
Prince Wei was admiring the flowers under the moonlight, seemingly in an elegant mood.
He stroked his mustache and murmured, "Ah, moonlight and slender blossoms... No, no, that won't do..."
Ruyi shot him a glance and curled her lip. "You're quite the show-off."
Prince Wei froze, then turned to look at her. "What kind of talk is that? I was simply moved by the scenery!"
Ruyi crossed her arms. "Out with it. What do you want? Don't dawdle."
Prince Wei looked irritated, but after a brief pause, he sighed. "There really isn't a single normal person in Boat Wind Alley."
He took a seat and waved a hand. "Never mind."
He looked at Ruyi. "There is a certain matter... I wonder if you might be interested."
"Not interested," Ruyi said bluntly.
Prince Wei chuckled. "You will be."
Ruyi frowned slightly, then stepped forward and took a seat.
"Let's hear it, then. Why would I be interested?"
Prince Wei looked at her and smiled. "A few days ago, my spies in the Capital City picked up some news. The current Vice Director of the Central Secretariat stood against the Crown Prince in the Imperial Court and boldly admonished him. This enraged the Crown Prince, who secretly made his move the very next day. Soon after, the Vice Director received an imperial decree ordering him to accompany a delegation to the Fiend Blood Path to win back the hearts of the jianghu."
Ruyi's brow furrowed. "What does that have to do with me?"
Prince Wei paused. "I suppose Miss Ruyi has been wandering the jianghu for so long that you've paid no attention to the Imperial Court. Do you know who this Vice Director of the Central Secretariat is?"
Ruyi's heart skipped a beat. "Who is it?!"
Prince Wei smiled. "That official's surname is Wang. Ah, it's a pity. If not for this incident, Lord Wang would have certainly been promoted again. But now, I'm afraid..."
He shook his head and continued, "The Fiend Blood Path is a chaotic place filled with all sorts of unsavory characters. Murder and robbery are everyday occurrences. This trip will surely cost him his life."
Ruyi shot to her feet. Her eyes locked onto Prince Wei, and she pointed a finger at him. "If you're lying to me, I'll carve you up alive!"
Prince Wei couldn't help but laugh. "Whatever do you mean, Miss Ruyi? Could it be that you are acquainted with this Lord Wang?"
Ruyi's chest heaved with anger.
Prince Wei was asking even though he already knew the answer.
Over the years, Ping'an had been caught in the swirling vortex of the Imperial Court. He had sensed the danger early on and concealed his family background, fearing that offending a powerful noble might one day bring disaster upon his loved ones.
For all this time, he had kept it perfectly hidden.
But for someone like Prince Wei, uncovering such a secret wasn't actually that difficult.
Prince Wei laughed. "Don't get so worked up. Sit down."
Ruyi managed to calm her racing emotions. She slowly sat back down, her eyes fixed on Prince Wei. "What exactly are you playing at?"
Prince Wei smiled. "Finally, we're getting down to business."
He paused and stood up. "You are a jianghu person, so you know exactly how chaotic the Fiend Blood Path is. Relying solely on your own strength, I'm afraid it would be difficult to make much of a difference. Therefore..."
"I am willing to lend you a hand!"
.
.
Lihua lay draped over the wall, watching the alley below.
For one, it was looking out for mice. For another, it was keeping an eye out for any suspicious individuals—which, to be fair, was basically the same thing.
The distant horizon began to pale, and the faint light of the morning sun gradually revealed itself.
A faint, thin mist quietly began to rise within Qingshan City.
The Four Seasons Spiritual Energy surged.
Lihua calmed its mind and communicated with it.
This was its Cultivation.
Creak...
When Ruyi returned and pushed the door open, she immediately spotted Lihua lying on the wall, its eyes wide open.
"What are you doing?" Ruyi asked.
Lihua turned its head. "Catching mice."
Ruyi let out an amused sound and walked inside.
Lihua stood up, stretched lazily, and hopped down from the courtyard wall. It trotted over to Ruyi's side and asked, "Where did Ruyi go last night?"
Ruyi replied absentmindedly, "Nowhere."
"Really?"
Lihua sniffed at Ruyi's scent and said, "Ah! Ruyi went to find that man from yesterday!"
The moment the words left its mouth, Ruyi rapped her knuckles against its head.
Lihua rubbed its head. "Why did you hit me?"
"Because you aren't smart."
"You're the one who isn't smart."
Lihua followed after her, protesting.
The person and the cat bickered endlessly once again.
They ate breakfast in Uncle Chen's courtyard.
They had leftovers from yesterday, so they threw them together to cook a simple vegetable congee.
Ruyi drank two bowls, then spoke up. "Uncle Chen..."
Chen Changsheng looked up at her and asked, "What is it?"
"I need to go on a long trip," Ruyi said.
Lihua, with grains of rice stuck to its face, looked up. "How come Lihua didn't know about this?"
Chen Changsheng gave a slight nod and asked, "Is it dangerous?"
Ruyi knew she couldn't hide it from Uncle Chen, so she answered truthfully, "I suppose it's fairly dangerous."
"Is that so..."
"Once this is over, Ruyi won't wander around anymore. I'll stay right here in Qingshan City and live a peaceful, quiet life."
Chen Changsheng looked up at her and said, "For This Chen, certain matters take no more effort than raising a hand. Therefore..."
Before he could finish, Ruyi interrupted him. "Uncle Chen, Ruyi is no longer a child. I have the ability to handle these things properly on my own."
Seeing her so resolute, Chen Changsheng decided not to press the issue.
"Then you must come back safely."
"I will."
