"I see them."
Chen Changsheng said, "Don't make a sound. Wait until they're all here."
He had a faint feeling that the bandits in these mountains were anything but simple.
Lihua nodded and stayed quiet, keeping a close eye on their movements.
But as it watched, it noticed something else.
"There's a demon!"
Chen Changsheng paused at those words and followed its gaze.
"Where? Where?"
Yu Hongjin also poked her head out in curiosity.
Yunxiang said, "The Spiritual Energy in these mountains is abundant. It's only natural for demons to live here."
"What kind of demon is it?" Yu Hongjin asked.
Lihua shook its head and said, "It's too far away. I can't really tell."
Chen Changsheng looked back and said, "It's a snake demon."
"A snake demon?!" Yu Hongjin's voice trembled, a sudden, inexplicable fear washing over her.
Lihua glanced back at her and asked, "You're even afraid of snakes?"
Yu Hongjin recovered her wits and said stubbornly, "Who's afraid? I-I-I'm not afraid!"
Lihua didn't call her bluff, only saying plainly, "Is that so."
"I'm just not afraid."
"Uh-huh."
Yu Hongjin suddenly felt that this smelly cat was getting more and more infuriating.
It aggravated people exactly like Mister Chen, and even carried a hint of Ruyi's shadow.
Chen Changsheng turned back to them and said, "When they block the road later, just stay inside the carriage and don't come out."
The horse carriage slowly moved forward.
It continued until it reached a narrow pass, where it came to a stop.
"Twang."
The sharp whistle of a flying arrow rang out.
It shot straight for Chen Changsheng's neck.
Chen Changsheng raised his hand and snatched the arrow out of the air in a single motion.
He looked it over and saw a faint green hue on the arrowhead. It was laced with poison.
"Quite ruthless."
Aiming to kill on the very first strike.
The horse carriage had stopped, and Chen Changsheng casually tossed the arrow aside.
In the blink of an eye, dozens of blades were drawn. The people who had been hiding in the shadows surged forward, completely surrounding the horse carriage.
Gleaming long sabers pointed directly at Chen Changsheng.
"Dismount!"
A shout rang out, but it was far different from what one might expect. Although the man was a bandit, his face was neither fierce nor vicious. Instead, he possessed a heroic air, and his features were quite handsome.
Chen Changsheng looked at him and asked, "Are you the leader?"
Zhan Yan furrowed his brow and said, "Enough with the nonsense!"
Chen Changsheng swept a glance over him and said, "Tell your leader to come out and speak!"
Zhan Yan didn't waste any more words. He immediately swung his blade, slashing toward Chen Changsheng.
Chen Changsheng raised his hand and threw a palm strike.
Right at that moment.
Another arrow came flying over.
"Swish."
The long saber in Zhan Yan's hand curled and snapped apart under the force of that palm strike. Just as Chen Changsheng's palm was about to touch him...
Chen Changsheng was abruptly forced to stop by the incoming arrow.
Because that arrow was aimed straight at the people inside the carriage.
Chen Changsheng had no choice but to pull his hand back and snatch the arrow instead.
Zhan Yan's eyes went wide in that instant. It took him a long moment to recover his senses. He took a massive breath and looked at his ruined blade, completely in disbelief.
Chen Changsheng held the poisoned arrow and looked ahead.
Up ahead stood a youth wearing a quiver, holding a drawn bow and staring right back at him.
The youth's skin was dark, and a long cloth was tied around his head. His eyes were exceptionally bright, sharp as a hawk's.
Zhan Yan gasped for breath and took two steps back.
The youth walked over, looked at Chen Changsheng, and said, "I am their leader."
"Third Leader," Zhan Yan said, cupping his hands.
The youth looked at Chen Changsheng and simply said, "You can catch my arrows. You're very good."
Chen Changsheng sized the youth up, noticing something. "To possess such archery skills at your age, why become a bandit?"
The youth paused and said, "I was born one."
The youth didn't seem to want to say anything more. He told the men in front, "Make way for them."
Zhan Yan paused. He glanced at the youth, then raised his hand.
The surrounding people immediately cleared a path.
Chen Changsheng watched these men. The so-called bandits walked with exceptionally proper posture, completely lacking the typical aura of outlaws.
Chen Changsheng said, "You're not bandits, are you?"
Zhan Yan frowned but didn't speak.
The youth drew his bow, nocked a poisoned arrow, and aimed it at Chen Changsheng. "Don't ask any more questions. From this close, it's impossible for you to catch my arrow again!"
Chen Changsheng looked at him and said, "You can try."
The youth didn't hesitate in the slightest. He loosed the string.
"Swish."
The arrow shot out fiercely, hurtling straight for Chen Changsheng's throat.
In less than a blink of an eye, the arrow reached Chen Changsheng's face.
But it came to a dead stop.
Chen Changsheng held the arrow in his hand, the tip barely half a chi from his throat.
Chen Changsheng gripped the arrow and asked, "Well?"
The youth stared at the scene in a daze.
Chen Changsheng looked at him calmly and said, "Your decisiveness and confidence will ruin you. You also lack a bit of reverence for life."
The youth froze for a moment, then shouted, "Run!"
Zhan Yan reacted instantly.
He hurriedly dashed off, running in the opposite direction.
The youth had already turned around and was fleeing the other way.
Chen Changsheng paused for a moment. He raised his hand, beckoning a small stone to his grasp.
He formed a slingshot with two fingers and pulled back an imaginary bowstring with his other hand.
"Swish."
The stone was much faster than the poisoned arrow.
The youth sensed the danger approaching from behind.
He jolted and quickly looked back, his eyes catching sight of the incoming stone.
He hastily drew an arrow and pulled his bow.
"Swish."
But to his shock, the stone collided directly with his poisoned arrow, forcefully shattering the arrowhead. The entire arrow burst apart in midair.
The youth's eyes went wide. In the blink of an eye.
The stone streaked right past his side.
In that instant, all the hairs on his body stood on end, and the fear of death gripped his heart.
"Boom!"
A tree behind him crashed down heavily. Where the stone had struck, a massive, terrifying hole had been blown right through the center of the trunk.
"Hah, hah, hah, hah..."
The youth panted heavily. In his sheer shock, his face had gone completely blank.
From his seat on the horse, Chen Changsheng watched him. After a moment, he looked away and urged the horse forward.
As if nothing had just happened at all.
Only after Chen Changsheng was gone.
The youth's legs gave out, and he dropped to his knees.
This was the closest he had ever been to death in his entire life.
...
Lihua asked, "Are we just leaving like this?"
"Yes."
Chen Changsheng nodded and said, "They aren't all bandits."
"Then what are they?" Yu Hongjin asked.
Yunxiang seemed to have figured it out early on. "They should be government soldiers in disguise."
Chen Changsheng gave a slight nod, then paused and added,
"However, that youth is a real bandit."
It seemed things were a bit complicated here.
