Yunxiang walked downstairs with Chen Changsheng, stopping along the way to borrow an umbrella from Auntie Song.
On their way down, they naturally spotted the Song couple burning incense to worship the Water God.
The two of them merely glanced over, asking no questions.
"Be careful," Yunxiang said.
Chen Changsheng nodded. He opened the umbrella and prepared to head out.
Yu Hongjin hurried downstairs with the plump Lihua trailing right behind her.
"I want to go too! I want to go too!" Yu Hongjin said.
"Meow, meow, meow," Lihua chimed in.
Chen Changsheng shook his head, simply telling them to stay put.
"I have some business to attend to," Chen Changsheng replied.
Song Bao didn't press the matter, though she likely already had her suspicions.
Father Song stood up. "I heard the Water God is undergoing a tribulation today. For Brother Chen to go out alone..."
Chen Changsheng smiled. "It's fine."
Seeing he couldn't be persuaded, Father Song grabbed a straw raincoat and offered it to him instead. "Put this on to block the wind and rain. An umbrella probably won't be enough."
Chen Changsheng nodded. "Thank you, Brother Song."
Donning the straw raincoat and opening the umbrella, Chen Changsheng stepped out the door.
Yunxiang stood at the inn's entrance, watching Mister leave. A knot of worry tightened in her chest.
The dark sky and the muffled rumble of thunder were deeply unsettling; she simply couldn't put her mind at ease.
Chen Changsheng walked steadily toward the outskirts of the district.
Shortly after he left, Song Bao slipped out through the inn's back door.
She wasn't afraid of the rain.
She had been a bold girl since childhood. Between fear and curiosity, she leaned far more toward the latter.
She wore only a conical straw hat when she left, simply because the family's umbrella and straw raincoat had already been lent out.
It was no matter.
To her, this bit of wind and rain was nothing, even if she was still sick.
She ran for quite a while after leaving before finally catching sight of Chen Changsheng's silhouette, tailing him from a wide distance.
She followed him all the way out of Yingshan District.
...
The heavy downpour continued. Logically, the rain should have begun to let up, but the storm before them was only growing fiercer.
The scent of damp earth mingled with the rain. Looking ahead, the falling droplets kicked up a dense mist upon hitting the ground; walking through it felt like wandering into a fairyland.
Splash, splash...
The roar of the rain filled her ears, yet Song Bao could still hear her own heartbeat pounding clearly.
No matter how bizarre or unbelievable it all seemed, she had to see it with her own eyes.
Chen Changsheng occasionally glanced toward the gathering thunderclouds.
Come to think of it, he had missed Mo Yuan's Tribulation Transcending back then. Today was a rare chance to finally witness a Dragon Transformation Heavenly Tribulation.
Halfway there, Chen Changsheng sensed something.
"Hm?"
He glanced back over his shoulder.
Not far behind, Song Bao saw him turn and quickly ducked behind a tree.
She panted, terrified of being spotted.
Chen Changsheng couldn't help but shake his head. "Miss Song, you'd best go back," he called out. "This isn't a place you should follow me to."
Song Bao froze at his words. Slowly, she stepped out.
After a long silence and catching her breath, she shook her head at him.
Chen Changsheng looked at her. "Go back."
The heavy rain didn't drown out his voice; it landed clearly in her ears.
"I want to see," Song Bao said, pursing her lips. "Just to see."
Chen Changsheng let out a helpless sigh, knowing he couldn't talk her out of it.
He turned back and continued walking.
His pace, however, was a bit faster.
Song Bao immediately sped up to chase after him.
Knowing she hadn't fully recovered from her cold, Chen Changsheng cast a spell to ensure the chill wouldn't invade her body any further.
Then, his steps became illusory in the rain.
Under Song Bao's watchful eyes, each step he took carried him vast distances away.
His silhouette seemed to flicker through the downpour, making it impossible for her to see him clearly.
Song Bao gaped, sudden panic setting in, and quickly sprinted forward.
She gave chase relentlessly.
But within mere moments, she lost sight of Chen Changsheng entirely.
Song Bao stopped in her tracks.
Her face was wet beneath the conical straw hat. She let out a long sigh, feeling somewhat discouraged.
"Just because I'm an ordinary person, does that mean I can't look...?"
Song Bao was unwilling to accept it.
She lifted her head, letting the rainwater fall into her eyes.
Suddenly, a flash of light flared in the distance.
Song Bao froze, then was immediately overcome with joy.
"Over there!"
Now that she knew the direction, she didn't need Mister Chen to guide her.
She broke into a run toward it, not daring to waste a single second, terrified of missing out.
Yet she never stopped to wonder what was up with that drop of rain.
...
Chen Changsheng arrived at the banks of the Sheng River.
Rain mist permeated the area, so dense one couldn't see their own fingers in front of them.
This anomaly was brought on by the Heavenly Tribulation to isolate ordinary people. If an ordinary person were to wander into it, they would only stumble in a daze and return the way they came. This was the will of Heaven, not Arts and Techniques.
It was only upon reaching the edge of the Sheng River that Chen Changsheng finally spotted Long Rong, dressed in red and enveloped by the momentum of the water and incense.
Sensing the movement behind her, Long Rong opened her eyes and looked back.
"You are early, Mister Chen," Long Rong said.
Holding his umbrella, Chen Changsheng paused before asking, "Would you consider this returning kindness with enmity?"
Long Rong smiled. "How am I returning kindness with enmity?"
Chen Changsheng said, "You knew This Chen couldn't bear to watch the commoners be caught up in the Heavenly Tribulation, so you deliberately chose a place this close to Yingshan District for your Tribulation Transcending. You want to use This Chen's power to neutralize a portion of the Heavenly Tribulation."
Chen Changsheng couldn't help but sigh softly. "Had This Chen known this would happen, This Chen shouldn't have spared you that day."
Long Rong smiled. "It is a pity you are too late. The momentum of the Heavenly Tribulation has already formed. Whether I live or die, this Heavenly Tribulation will fall, and Mister will have to endure it all the same."
Chen Changsheng looked at her and sighed again. "Why not repent and turn back?"
Long Rong remained calm. "Repent and turn back?"
She shook her head. "Heaven treats me unjustly, so I must defy Heaven. For the only path of survival before me, I can only rely on myself."
She let out another smile, though it was somewhat bleak. "If Mister finds this troublesome, you can simply execute me right now."
Chen Changsheng looked at her and said, "Didn't you find someone to spread that folk song in the district to remind This Chen that you are still the Water God? If This Chen kills you, the waters of the Sheng River will inevitably surge, and the people on both banks will suffer a Tribulation."
"Mister is truly a smart person," Long Rong said.
Chen Changsheng looked at her calmly. "This Chen will do nothing but stand right here and watch you burn in the Heavenly Tribulation."
Long Rong considered this for a moment. "Is Mister so certain I will fall to the Heavenly Tribulation?"
"This Chen said it before," Chen Changsheng replied. "Heaven will claim you."
Long Rong burst into laughter, demanding, "What is Heaven? If I hold the world in my hand, I am Heaven!"
Her aura shifted at that moment. Faint tendrils of black energy began to emerge from her body.
Chen Changsheng furrowed his brow. "You have already fallen into the demonic path..."
Long Rong's eyes suddenly turned icy as she looked at Chen Changsheng. "So what if I am a demon? Is it not far better than the so-called Righteous Path? Back in Shangjing, Mister must have seen my true intentions and understood my ending. By stepping onto this path, I was destined to never escape the Heavenly Dao's grasp. My only fate was death!"
"But why?! Over these years, I have accumulated virtue and performed good deeds, protecting the people on both banks. There have rarely been any water disasters upon this Sheng River. Is this not my kindness? If so, why doesn't the Heavenly Dao show me an ounce of mercy? Why won't it even allow me a path of survival?"
"Why?!"
As Long Rong decried the heartless Heavenly Dao, the demonic energy swirling around her swelled.
Demonic energy pulsed, and her red robes whipped in the rain.
Flashes of Dragon's Might sparked within Long Rong's eyes. This was the momentum of a dragon about to be fully formed.
"True Dragon or demonic dragon, it matters not. My kindness is not my kindness, but my evil is undoubtedly my evil. Since the Heavenly Dao is so unjust, why should I still regard it as Heaven? Entering the demonic path was not what I wanted..."
Long Rong calmed down, saying, "I only wanted a path of survival."
As she spoke, the Heavenly Tribulation suddenly surged.
The heavenly momentum, which should have needed a few more hours, formed into a raging tempest at that very moment.
The Heavenly Tribulation had arrived!
Rumble!!
A deafening clap of thunder exploded right beside their ears.
Chen Changsheng was suddenly startled. He raised a hand to divine the cause, and his expression instantly darkened.
Long Rong looked at Chen Changsheng. "I was worried earlier that Mister wouldn't help me, but it seems I must thank that little girl."
Chen Changsheng let out a soft sigh.
Through the rain mist, he saw that Song Bao had arrived there at some unknown point.
Far away, upon a mountain peak.
Two figures were gazing at this scene.
"She actually drew the Heavenly Tribulation so quickly," Mo Yuan muttered.
He had thought it would take several more years; this was rather unexpected.
Old Dragon King Ying Zheng glanced at him. "This Dragon Immortal plotted everywhere, sought incense, and obtained the water fortunes. It is entirely expected that it would be this fast."
His expression changed as he continued, "However, observing her..."
"Why does it look like she's fallen into the demonic path?"
Mo Yuan froze at those words. "What?"
He straightened up and looked over. Sure enough, he could sense a trace of demonic energy within her aura.
Mo Yuan paused, confused. "Why go this far? The Heavenly Tribulation has already formed. Falling into the demonic path now—is she afraid of not dying fast enough?"
The Old Dragon King shook his head, equally perplexed.
But then Mo Yuan's eyes widened. "Is that..."
A faint light gleamed in his eyes. Piercing through the rain mist, he spotted a mister in green robes standing within.
"Mister Chen?"
"Hm?"
"Mister Chen is in there!"
The Old Dragon King looked over, but all he could see was a sheet of rain blocking his line of sight.
"Really? How can you see that?"
Mo Yuan opened his mouth, but he couldn't quite explain it for a moment.
The rain mist was sent down by the Heavenly Dao; it was likely because his body bore a curse left by the Heavenly Dao that he could peer through the rain mist and see inside.
Mo Yuan was just about to go down and take a look when the Old Dragon King stopped him.
"What are you doing?"
The Old Dragon King glared at him. "The Heavenly Tribulation is about to fall. Are you going down to seek death?"
Mo Yuan said, "Mister Chen is in there!"
