The cat was up very early. Or rather, it hadn't slept at all.

The old residence of Tang Manor was massive. At least for a cat, it was impossible to explore it completely, no matter how much it roamed.

In the middle of the night, it ran into the ancestral hall.

It saw someone kneeling there.

Bedding and a quilt lay to the side, spread right on the floor.

It was the young man from earlier in the day.

Tang Shijing let out a yawn. His legs had gone weak from kneeling, and it took him a long while to stand up and rub his knees.

Turning his head, he saw a cat standing on the wall, sizing him up.

Tang Shijing quickly patted his chest and let out a breath. "You scared me."

Lihua tilted its head. "Laughing at you."

"Laugh..."

Tang Shijing froze. His pupils shrank slightly before he finally processed it.

"You can talk?"

"You can actually talk?"

Tang Shijing stared at the cat in disbelief.

Lihua paused, then shook its head. "I can't talk."

Tang Shijing's mental fortitude was quite strong. He had likely heard and seen enough that he didn't feel too shocked.

Tang Shijing waved to it. "Come down and talk."

Lihua shook its head. "Not coming down. Chen the Good Man said not to casually enter people's ancestral halls."

Tang Shijing blinked, then nodded. "That's true."

A stray cat could enter, but a talking cat... that was a different matter.

"How long do you have to kneel?" Lihua asked.

Tang Shijing thought for a moment. "A good few days still. I can only leave when Aunt stops being angry, otherwise I have to keep kneeling."

Lihua pondered this. "Lihua doesn't understand. You're clearly a good person, so why do you talk like a bad one?"

Tang Shijing said, "Do you mean what I said today?"

That remark about the emperor...

Tang Shijing smiled. "If you speak enough nonsense, people won't know which of your words are true."

Lihua was slightly taken aback. "I know. That Wei, Wei... anyway, he's just like you. Also not serious."

It couldn't quite remember the name.

Tang Shijing nodded. "I didn't expect a cat to understand these things. I was afraid you wouldn't."

Lihua said, "Lihua is very smart."

"A smart cat indeed."

Tang Shijing sat cross-legged and stretched his joints. "Did Aunt say anything about me afterward?"

Lihua asked, "Miss Yun?"

"Right."

Lihua thought for a moment. "She didn't say much. Just that she'd have a good talk with you later."

Tang Shijing said, "Those words were a bit treasonous. It's normal for Aunt to be this angry."

"If you knew that, why did you say it?"

"If I hadn't, how could I stay here all the time?"

"You want to stay here?"

"Yeah."

Tang Shijing laughed. "It's great here. I don't have to manage anything or care about anything. I can beat up whoever I want and bully whoever I want. Even if the Heavenly King himself came, he'd have to bow down. It's not like Shangjing, where I have to tiptoe around everything."

Lihua looked at him, its brows furrowing slightly. "You like bullying people?"

"Yeah."

"That's not good."

"It's perfectly fine," Tang Shijing said. "It's not like bullying people is automatically wrong. I bully the people who bully people, and that's extremely satisfying. This young master just likes beating those bastards until they cry for their parents while they can't do a thing about it."

"Bully the people who bully people, bully people bully..."

Lihua muttered, unable to fully grasp the meaning. It was too convoluted.

"Hmm..."

Seeing its reaction, Tang Shijing burst into laughter.

"You're so dumb."

Lihua instantly got defensive. "Lihua is smart!"

Tang Shijing nodded. "Alright, alright, you're smart, you're smart..."

Tang Shijing cast a glance at it. "I'm a little hungry. Can the smart cat go find me something to eat?"

Lihua asked, "You didn't eat?"

Tang Shijing rolled his eyes at it. "Did you see me take more than a few bites this afternoon? Sigh, Aunt is truly ruthless. She really didn't leave me a single bite to eat."

Lihua said, "Lihua can't help it. You'll just have to starve."

Tang Shijing looked at it. "Do you have the heart to watch me starve?"

Lihua thought about it. "Lihua isn't hungry."

"Huh?" Tang Shijing didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "I'm hungry! I'm the one who's hungry!"

Lihua looked toward a corner of the ancestral hall. "There's a mouse over there."

"You want me to catch a mouse to eat?"

"Yep."

"I don't eat mice."

Lihua paused for a moment before replying, "Then you can just stay hungry."

Tang Shijing said, "Can't you go to the Kitchen and steal me something to eat?"

"!!"

Lihua jumped in shock. "Lihua doesn't steal things. Won't do it."

"It's not stealing, it's taking."

"You just said steal."

"It's taking. I misspoke."

"You just want Lihua to steal things. Lihua won't do it."

Tang Shijing opened his mouth, looking utterly helpless. "I give up..."

Lihua crouched down and stopped speaking, quietly watching him.

Tang Shijing sighed. He looked up at the bright moon. "When will this end?"

"What do you mean?" Lihua asked.

"Nothing."

Tang Shijing waved a hand. "You wouldn't understand even if I told you."

Lihua said, "If you don't tell me, how can Lihua understand?"

"So dumb, yet so curious."

"You're insulting me."

"Was I praising you, then?"

Lihua cast a glance at him and muttered, "I'm not playing with you anymore."

Saying that, Lihua turned to walk away.

But Tang Shijing immediately called out to stop it. "Hey, don't go. I was just joking. How can you just leave like that? Let's chat some more."

Lihua ignored him and simply walked off.

It disliked Tang Shijing a little now.

Cats held grudges, after all.

It returned to the room.

The room smelled of alcohol.

Lihua looked over and saw Chen Changsheng asleep, slumped over the table, smelling strongly of booze.

He seemed to have passed out.

A small jug of wine sat on the table, completely empty.

Lihua looked at the drunken Chen Changsheng and muttered, "Ruyi says that people who get drunk are the most good-for-nothing."

It looked left and right, then ran over to close the window.

After looking it over, it still felt somewhat dissatisfied.

So it went to the bed, dragged a quilt over in its mouth, and draped it over Chen Changsheng.

Then it sprawled out on the table, took one last look at Chen Changsheng, and went to sleep.

Early the next morning.

Chen Changsheng woke up.

Waking up after drinking always left one's head a bit groggy.

The cat was woken up as well.

Seeing the quilt over him, Chen Changsheng looked at Lihua and asked with a smile, "Did Lihua drape this quilt over This Chen last night?"

Lihua looked at him. After a moment, it said a single sentence: "Chen the Good Man is good-for-nothing."

"Huh?"
