Chen Changsheng had no idea how long he had been asleep.
In the temple hall, the young Daoist disciple who had been guarding the door had come inside, occasionally glancing at the sleeping guest.
It made no sense at all.
Sleeping soundly right here in the Immortal's Temple—wasn't he afraid the Immortals would take offense?
The young disciple had wanted to wake him, but his master had stopped him.
Confused, he asked his master why. "Master, the deity statues are right in front of him. For him to sleep like this... I'm afraid it's against the rules..."
The old Daoist priest merely shook his head. "He is allowed to sleep."
Anyone else would have been chased out long ago.
The young disciple frowned slightly, looking at his master.
The boy thought his master was being overly cryptic, not quite understanding what he meant.
Was Master saying this person was an Immortal?
No matter how the young disciple looked at him, the man didn't seem like one. He wasn't anything special—just an ordinary person.
By the time Chen Changsheng woke up, he had no idea what time it was.
A light rain had begun to fall outside.
The misty drizzle landed on the temple's roof tiles, gathered into droplets, and trickled down the grooves. It spilled into the courtyard and the water vat in the corner with a soft patter.
The fresh scent of the rain completely roused Chen Changsheng.
He stretched out with a yawn, only to see the young Daoist meditating right in front of him.
Seeing him awake, the boy called out, "You're awake, Layman?"
Chen Changsheng nodded. "It felt so comfortable for a moment that I dozed off. I'm truly sorry."
The young disciple gave a soft snort. "You certainly have a big heart, Layman, daring to sleep right in front of the divine statues. How could this humble Daoist dare to say anything?"
Hearing this, Chen Changsheng understood—the young Daoist was definitely blaming him.
Chen Changsheng chuckled. "It is against the rules. However, I've slept here countless times in my early years, so I suppose one or two more times won't make a difference."
The young Daoist froze for a moment and looked at him.
Chen Changsheng pointed toward the center of the hall, directly facing the statues. "Years ago, there was a chair right here. I would sleep exactly like this, and the Immortals never blamed this Chen for it."
The young Daoist replied, "How can you act like that? Even if you don't believe, Layman, you shouldn't be disrespectful."
Chen Changsheng said, "That is the principle, yes. It's just that this Chen has gotten used to being presumptuous. With half a foot inside the Daoist Gate already, the Immortals wouldn't bother interfering with this Chen. They likely don't even want to look at this Chen."
The young disciple didn't really understand his cryptic words.
Before he could speak, Chen Changsheng asked, "Where is your master?"
"Master is drinking tea in the back courtyard with Layman Mu," the boy answered.
Chen Changsheng nodded. "This Chen truly didn't expect that your master would still be alive. That is quite a surprise."
The young disciple furrowed his brows. "You really don't know how to speak properly, Layman!"
"I suppose I don't."
Chen Changsheng tucked his hands into his sleeves and said, "You talk about Immortals, but going by the lifespan the Immortals gave your master, he should have died years ago. That is simply the truth."
The boy grew angry. He stood up, ready to chase Chen Changsheng out.
"Get out!"
The young disciple snapped.
Chen Changsheng smiled. "This Chen will leave after grabbing a few things."
Saying this, he stood up and headed for the Book Pavilion.
But the young disciple refused to let him go.
"What are you doing? If you don't leave right now, I'm throwing you out!"
Naturally, the argument in the front hall reached the ears of the old Daoist priest.
Daoist Fuyun hurriedly emerged from the back courtyard.
"Daozhen! Do not be insolent!"
The boy said indignantly, "Master, he disrespects the Immortals, and he even insulted you!"
Chen Changsheng smiled and said to the old priest, "That is correct."
Seeing Mister's expression, the old priest understood everything. He gave a helpless smile. "My disciple doesn't have the best temper. Please don't tease him anymore, Mister."
How could he not know?
Back in the day, when his Senior Brother had gone down the mountain to fetch water, Mister had teased him in the exact same way.
Chen Changsheng looked at Daozhen and said, "Your master really protects you."
Daozhen glared at him, then turned his head away.
Layman Mu also walked over, asking, "What's going on here? Why the commotion?"
The old priest offered an explanation.
Upon hearing it, Layman Mu burst into laughter.
"The little Daoist's temper really is exactly like that," Layman Mu chuckled.
Daozhen didn't quite understand. He asked, "Master... aren't any of you angry?"
The old priest wasn't angry, and since it was none of Layman Mu's business, he naturally wasn't angry either.
The old priest said, "Focus on chanting your scriptures. I'll explain it to you in a bit."
Daozhen opened his mouth, still feeling somewhat defiant.
"Go on," the old priest said with a smile.
Daozhen pursed his lips. He shot a glance at Mister Qingshan before heading back into the hall alone to meditate.
The old priest then invited Chen Changsheng to the back courtyard.
Hot tea was set out in the pavilion.
The old priest poured Chen Changsheng a cup.
Chen Changsheng felt a bit more comfortable after drinking it. He ate a piece of dried fruit and said, "Life in the temple has gotten much better these days."
The old priest nodded. "We planted a peach tree and opened up a small farming plot. Normally, we can grow some vegetables and take them to the market to sell. There aren't many guests, but it's enough to cover the temple's expenses."
He looked at Chen Changsheng and asked, "Mister hasn't been back in many years. After wandering for so long, I wonder if you've had any gains?"
"Quite a few," Chen Changsheng replied.
At the very least, he had found some reasons behind the curse and finally had a few leads.
Hearing this, Layman Mu paused and asked, "Why do I always feel like there's something strange about the way you two talk?"
The old priest laughed. "You may not know this, Layman, but although Mister Chen looks young, he is actually much older than this poor Daoist."
Layman Mu stared blankly upon hearing this. "How can that be?"
Chen Changsheng took over the conversation, saying, "There is a martial art in the jianghu that can preserve one's skin and appearance, which is why I don't look old."
Layman Mu's eyes lit up. "There is actually such an Immortal martial art?"
Chen Changsheng nodded. "There is."
He was just spouting nonsense. As for whether it actually existed, even he didn't know.
Layman Mu immediately followed up, "Then how old is Mister now?"
Chen Changsheng thought for a moment and shook his head. "I can't remember clearly anymore. However, the first person this Chen met was the master of this Priest's master."
Layman Mu was utterly shocked. "Wouldn't that make you over a hundred years old!?"
Chen Changsheng smiled. "Centenarians are rare, but not nonexistent. The old temple master of Liuyun Temple lived to be over a hundred."
Layman Mu opened his mouth in awe. "That truly is longevity..."
Listening to Mister talk about these things, the old priest couldn't help but smile. Barely a word of truth ever came out of Mister's mouth.
The old priest asked, "For what matter did Mister return this time?"
"It's nothing in particular," Chen Changsheng said. "I just happened to be passing by, so I came back to take a look. I also brought some wine for your master."
The old priest nodded in understanding.
Then, he heard Chen Changsheng ask, "Speaking of which, on the way here, this Chen heard people mention Tong Zhihuan and Tao'er. Have the two of them come back in recent years?"
"They came back once a few years ago," the old priest replied.
