Immortal Travel of Longevity

Chapter 872: A Fox Demon Like a Human

"Donglin Ward is just up ahead!"

Yu Hongjin remembered this place quite vividly.

During her early years of wandering, she had been kicked right out of the ward by a demon here.

"Hmph!"

Yu Hongjin crossed her arms, let out a cold snort, and declared, "I've come back for revenge!"

Taken aback, Lihua glanced at her. "Revenge?" the civet cat asked.

"That's right, revenge!"

Brimming with confidence, Yu Hongjin fully intended to treat that demon exactly as it had treated her—by kicking it right out of the ward.

Chen Changsheng glanced back at her. "Then you had better be careful. Donglin Ward is different from other places. It went through a few things years ago, and now it's a place where humans and demons coexist."

Chen Changsheng nodded. "Speaking of which, this matter has some connection to This Chen."

Even before they entered the ward, gazes would drift toward them from the roadside.

Within this territory, the underworld deputies kept a close watch on everyone.

Just as they were about to enter Donglin Ward...

...a figure suddenly emerged from the shade of the trees. It wore clothes and bore the head of a fox, but it walked like a man. As it approached, it even cupped its hands in a perfectly human salute.

The clothed fox demon blocked their horse carriage.

Yu Hongjin stared blankly at the sight. "Hey, you're a pretty unusual demon..." she blurted out.

"Greetings, Mister," the fox demon said calmly.

Chen Changsheng looked at him and asked, "May I ask why Your Excellency is blocking our path?"

Raising its paws in a cupped salute, the fox demon said, "The City God Lord has ordered that, aside from the netherworld officials, no demons are permitted to enter Donglin Ward. The young girl and civet cat traveling with you, Mister, are both demons and therefore may not enter. Please understand."

Yu Hongjin froze, exchanging a glance with Lihua.

"Why aren't we allowed in?" Yu Hongjin protested, somewhat indignant.

The fox demon smiled. "Little girl, this is the rule. Without permission, even I am not allowed to casually enter the ward."

Lihua stretched out a paw and meowed twice, as if in protest.

Chen Changsheng stopped the fish and the cat behind him, then cupped his hands. "I ask that this netherworld official inform the City God. Tell him that, in accordance with the rules, I have come to inspect the case records."

The fox demon looked confused by this. He glanced at Chen Changsheng, figuring the man was likely an Immortal Master, though he didn't know from where. Quanshan? Qingshan City? Neither quite fit.

Unable to gauge the man's exact background, the fox demon didn't dare offend him.

He let out a breath. "Please wait here for a moment," he said.

"Much obliged," Chen Changsheng replied with cupped hands.

Once the fox demon left, Lihua finally spoke up. "Chen the Good Man, that demon has a fox's face, but he acts just like a human."

"That one just now should be a netherworld official of Donglin Ward," Chen Changsheng said.

Yunxiang poked her head out of the horse carriage and asked, "Can demons also serve as netherworld officials?"

"Logically speaking, it is possible," Chen Changsheng explained. "But that is on the condition that the City God presiding over those netherworld officials holds a status recognized by the Heavenly Dao. The one in Donglin Ward, however, has never received the Heavenly Dao's acknowledgment."

Yunxiang was momentarily stunned. "Then... how could the heavens spare him?"

"The City God of Donglin Ward is quite unique," Chen Changsheng said. "He was originally a demon who achieved Spirit, but a cultivator severed his physical body and sealed him here to protect the local commoners in place of the deceased City God, atoning for his sins."

Yunxiang couldn't help but look at him. "It was you who did it, Mister, wasn't it?"

Chen Changsheng nodded.

Yu Hongjin suddenly realized what was going on. "So that's it! I was wondering why that demon kicked me when we had no grudges or grievances! So that's why!"

"When you see him, you can just hit him back," Chen Changsheng said.

The group chatted idly.

Before long, a figure came rushing out of the ward in a great hurry.

Chen Changsheng cast his gaze over to see who had come.

The Badger Demon had been quite diligent and conscientious over the years, and his temperament had changed significantly. He no longer carried the sinister aura of his early years; instead, an air of righteousness now emanated from the demon.

Following behind him were quite a few netherworld officials, including the fox demon who had gone to deliver the report.

"City God Lord, please slow down."

But no one could catch up to the Badger Demon's pace.

Panting for breath, the fox demon felt somewhat bewildered.

Just who on earth was that person outside the ward?

To think he could make the City God Lord this frantic.

The fox demon secretly rejoiced. Thank goodness he had been cautious; otherwise, he might have genuinely offended a major figure.

Arriving before Chen Changsheng, the Badger Demon immediately cupped his hands, bowed deeply, and offered a formal salute.

"The Badger Demon pays his respects to Mister Chen."

Chen Changsheng raised his hand, signaling for him to rise.

The Badger Demon looked up, then heard Chen Changsheng say, "Let's go."

"This way, Mister."

The Badger Demon stepped forward to take the horse's reins, guiding it into the ward.

All the netherworld officials who witnessed this scene froze, failing to react for a moment.

It was only when one of the dozens of demons remembered something that they spoke up: "I remember now! That's the Mister from all those years ago! Mister Chen!"

"Ah!"

The crowd gasped in shock, the realization washing over them in an instant.

If it was this Mister, then it was no surprise at all.

After all, this Mister was a living legend.

The fox demon, however, was full of confusion. Having arrived only recently, he knew little about the affairs of the Mortal World and had never heard of 'Mister Chen.'

"Could one of my colleagues please enlighten me?"

"Brother Fox, there is much you do not know..."

As the colleague beside him slowly recounted the tale, the fox demon finally grasped the situation from beginning to end.

The fox demon was overwhelmed with shock.

Only then did he realize that the City God Lord, a demon himself, was merely being suppressed here to atone for his sins.

So that was it... so that was it...

The horse carriage came to a halt in front of the City God Temple.

The Badger Demon invited them inside, simultaneously ordering his subordinates to bring over all the case files accumulated over the years.

"All the case records from these past years are here. Please look them over, Mister."

Compared to the past, the Badger Demon was now far more cautious and deferential.

Chen Changsheng gave him a look and asked, "What are you afraid of?"

The Badger Demon opened his mouth, initially reluctant to answer, but figuring things had already come this far, he spoke frankly. "Mister, I am afraid I may have made errors in my judgments."

Chen Changsheng, however, replied calmly, "Let This Chen look through them first."

With that, Chen Changsheng sat at the table and began leafing through the case records.

Yunxiang took Yu Hongjin for a stroll around the temple, while Lihua scurried off to the side and scrambled to the very top of a tree in a flash.

Time ticked by, moment by moment.

The Badger Demon waited by his side, not daring to speak.

The continuous rustle of turning pages echoed in his ears, filling the Badger Demon with apprehension.

Chen Changsheng asked casually, "That rat demon Fu Hongmei surrendered himself here previously. I wonder how he is doing now?"

"When Mister visited last time, I received your warning," the Badger Demon replied. "Afterward, I expelled all the demons from the ward. The Demon Market in the mountains has opened wide, and now all the demons have settled down near the Demon Market."
