Immortal Travel of Longevity

Chapter 874: Like a Withered Tree Returning to Spring

The group left the inn and headed straight out of the district.

Just as they stepped out, they ran into the Fox Demon from earlier that day.

Seeing Chen Changsheng again, the Fox Demon hurriedly stepped forward to bow. "This lowly demon greets Mister Chen."

Chen Changsheng cupped his hands in return.

Then the Fox Demon asked, "May I ask why the Immortal Master is leaving the district this late at night?"

Yunxiang looked at the talking fox. His humble, polite demeanor actually struck her as quite amusing.

Mister's world was truly different.

"I heard the Demon Market is quite lively," Chen Changsheng said, "so I wanted to see it for myself."

The Fox Demon's eyes lit up. "In that case, might this lowly one lead the way for the Immortal Master? It could save you some trouble. What do you think?"

"It is my honor."

The Fox Demon led the way toward the mountain market.

As they walked, Chen Changsheng struck up a conversation.

"You're from Yuanshan, aren't you?"

The Fox Demon started slightly, hurriedly replying, "The Immortal Master is correct. This lowly one did indeed come from Yuanshan."

Chen Changsheng nodded. "The Fox Lord and I go back a long way. Years ago, This Chen even stayed at Yuanshan as a guest. It's been a long time since we last met—I wonder how he's doing now?"

The Fox Demon's reverence deepened at those words. "The Fox Lord has been in secluded cultivation in the mountains for the past few years and rarely shows his face. Because of that... I'm not entirely sure myself."

"Secluded cultivation?"

"Yes. According to the elders, the Fox Lord has gained some insights in his cultivation. Once he emerges, he will undoubtedly reach a higher realm."

"That is a good thing."

"Come to think of it," Chen Changsheng continued, "compared to the Mortal World, the Spiritual Energy in Yuanshan should be much more abundant. Wouldn't it be much better for you there?"

The Fox Demon chuckled. "The Immortal Master might not know, but while Yuanshan's Spiritual Energy is indeed richer, the Mortal World offers more serendipity. More than that, I was simply curious about the Mortal World. Having heard the elders speak of it so often, I always wanted to come take a look for myself."

"Have you gained anything?"

"I have, I have."

The Fox Demon said, "Along the way, I have seen magnificent sights and grasped a sliver of the intent of nature. Later, I shared a discourse on the Dao with a Daoist true master, and managed to learn a Divine Ability."

"It is good that you have gained something," Chen Changsheng said.

Yunxiang, observing from the side, chimed in. "Speaking of which, you must have gained the ability to take human form a long time ago. Why do you still go about in your demon body?"

The Fox Demon cupped his hands. "To answer the fairy, the City God Lord had me stay here to stop wild monsters from entering the district. It is meant as a deterrent, so I show my true form. That way, whoever sees me knows exactly who they are dealing with, saving me a great deal of trouble."

"I see." Yunxiang shifted the subject slightly. "But you are mistaken about one thing. I'm no fairy, just an ordinary mortal."

The Fox Demon smiled. "Anyone by the Immortal Master's side is no ordinary mortal, and so should be called a fairy."

"Wow," Yu Hongjin piped up. "You really have a way with words, big fox."

The Fox Demon didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Knowing the little girl didn't mean to insult him, he took no offense and actually found her quite amusing.

Yunxiang smiled helplessly and tapped Yu Hongjin lightly on the head. "Hong Jin, do not be rude."

Yu Hongjin rubbed her head and quieted down.

Lihua looked at the fox and said, "Your ears are bigger than mine."

The Fox Demon glanced at Lihua's ears and chuckled sheepishly. "To answer the immortal beast, a fox's ears are indeed larger than a cat's, but my skills are no match for yours."

Lihua froze, seemingly caught off guard.

"Why are you praising Lihua?"

The Mao'er actually felt a bit shy.

Chen Changsheng and Yunxiang exchanged a smile, both feeling that this Fox Demon was quite amusing.

Yunxiang smiled. "It seems you really have been walking the Mortal World for a long time. This silver tongue of yours is extraordinary—you speak far better than most people."

"The fairy flatters me," the Fox Demon replied with a smile.

The group soon arrived at the edge of a stream.

Looking ahead, they saw an old tree leaning over the bank, with many Lanterns hanging from it.

At the same time, they spotted another demon poling a Bamboo Raft across the river to the bank.

It stepped up to the tree.

The demon took out a few spirit fruits and placed them beneath it. Instantly, a Branch extended, offering a Lantern to the little demon.

The little demon took the Lantern, offered its thanks, and followed the path past the stream into the mountains.

Gazing into the distance, lights dotted the dark mountainside, and many figures could be seen making their way up the slopes.

"Why are they all carrying Lanterns?" Lihua asked curiously.

The Fox Demon explained, "The Demon Market requires maintenance, so visitors must pay a toll. It is much like the money commoners use. You must offer wealth, spirit fruits, or other valuables to the Old Locust Tree Lord. He collects them and gives you a Lantern, granting you entry. Without a Lantern, you cannot get in."

"Ohh..."

Lihua understood, its gaze fixing on the locust tree.

"This way, please."

The Fox Demon led them onto the Bamboo Raft. After crossing the river, they arrived before the locust tree.

Sensing the aura of mortals, the locust tree bore down on them with an oppressive pressure.

The Fox Demon spoke up. "Old Locust Tree Lord, these are the City God Lord's esteemed guests. They wish to enter the market to take a look. Please be accommodating."

With that, the Fox Demon pulled a piece of jade from his robes and placed it beneath the tree.

Seeing this, the Old Locust Tree Lord sent down five Lanterns.

It also rolled the spirit stone back up, gesturing for the Fox Demon to take it back.

The Fox Demon chuckled and politely declined the return. "Keep it, Old Locust Tree Lord. Leave it for the little brothers in the market to buy some drinks."

The Old Locust Tree Lord's Branch swayed, as if in gratitude.

At some point, Lihua had run right up beneath the locust tree.

Pressing a paw against the trunk, it mumbled, "Grandpa Locust Tree, how did you grow so big..."

The locust tree froze, seemingly bewildered by this cat demon.

Yunxiang stepped forward and scooped Lihua up into her arms. "Please forgive it, Old Locust Tree Lord. Our Mao'er is used to being mischievous."

The locust tree didn't take offense. Instead, it extended a Branch and dropped a single leaf right in front of the Mao'er's eyes.

"Is this for Lihua?" Lihua was pleasantly surprised.

The locust tree swayed in affirmation.

Lihua hurriedly said, "Thank you."

With that, it popped the locust leaf right into its mouth.

An immense sense of comfort instantly washed over its whole body. "Delicious! Thank you, Grandpa Locust Tree."

The Fox Demon was quite taken aback.

The Old Locust Tree Lord was normally as stingy as could be. Why was he being so nice all of a sudden?

Lihua raised its head and said, "Since Grandpa Locust Tree gave Lihua a gift, Lihua should give Grandpa Locust Tree something too."

As it spoke, Lihua's eyes glowed faintly in the night.

The surrounding Four Seasons Spiritual Energy converged on the spot, washing over the locust tree like a gentle spring breeze.

The locust tree's branches and leaves unfurled, as if an old man had suddenly grown a few years younger.

Seeing this, the Fox Demon stared blankly, his eyes filled with disbelief.

"It is just like the art of a withered tree returning to spring..."
