Seeing their Senior Brother return in such a wretched state, the Quanshan Daoists hurried over to ask what had happened.
"Senior Brother! What happened?"
"Some rustic cultivator from who knows where is causing trouble at our mountain gate with an evil spirit! He even injured the two of us! I must report this to the elders and have them decide what to do!"
"Senior Brother!"
"Why bother the elders with this? We can all head down the mountain together. If he remains stubborn, we'll just strike him down and refine him into a corpse puppet. Wouldn't that vent our anger?"
The Daoist halted at those words. After a moment of thought, he said, "We probably shouldn't go as far as killing him. If the elders look into it, they'll likely punish us, too."
"What's the problem? Demons have been wreaking havoc at the foot of the mountain lately. Since that man is traveling with an evil spirit, going down there is just exorcising evil and slaying demons. What is there to fear? Besides, he hasn't even left the mountain gate, has he?"
The Daoist mused over it and agreed it was an excellent point.
"Alright!"
Before long, seven or eight Daoists followed close behind, marching down the mountain.
The group surged down the stone steps in a grand procession, swords in hand and momentum fierce. Leading them was the very Daoist who had just fled up the mountain, his eyes now brimming with killing intent.
Chen Changsheng had waited for a long time without seeing anyone arrive. "Are your people not coming?" he asked.
The Daoist remaining in front of him glared coldly and sneered, "Looks to me like you're in a hurry to die."
Chen Changsheng chuckled and nodded. "You're right. This poor Daoist is indeed in a hurry to die."
Lihua raised its head and looked over.
Suddenly, a flurry of footsteps rang out.
The Daoist's eyes lit up. "Senior and Junior Brothers!" he called out.
"Who dares cause trouble on our Quanshan!"
"Where did this rustic little Daoist come from!"
"Do you think Quanshan has no one to stop you?"
Chen Changsheng's gaze swept over them. "You're all Quanshan disciples, aren't you? I waited all this time, and you only fetched your fellow brothers? The elders aren't coming?"
The Daoist with killing intent in his eyes sneered, "Why would the elders need to deal with a scoundrel like you!"
Chen Changsheng smiled. "This Chen was hoping to beat the old and the young all at once. It seems I'll just have to settle for beating you young ones to vent my anger."
"Presumptuous!"
"Insolent!"
"Ignorant fool!"
Fury instantly erupted among the group of disciples.
Dozens of longswords rang as they were drawn from their sheaths. The might of Arts and Techniques rippled outward, causing the trees on the mountain to sway. As the Daoists unfurled their combined aura, the surrounding woods bowed under the weight, pressing a heavy pressure down upon Chen Changsheng.
Chen Changsheng, however, remained perfectly calm. In the face of such oppressive Divine Abilities, he did not show the slightest ripple of emotion.
Lihua looked at the men and said, "Bullying the few with the many! You're not good people!"
"Hold your tongue, evil spirit!" a Quanshan Daoist barked, slashing his sword forward.
Lihua stared blankly. Suddenly, the surrounding Spiritual Energy trembled.
"Boom!"
A clap of thunder abruptly exploded above Quanshan.
Muffled thunder rolled through the clear blue daytime sky.
The sudden crack of thunder startled the men.
The incoming sword faltered for a fraction of a second, but it quickly recovered, slashing straight toward Lihua.
"Whoosh..."
With a mere raise of his hand, Chen Changsheng dissolved the sword strike. The attacking Daoist was sent flying backward, only managing to steady himself when several of his senior brothers caught him.
Chen Changsheng looked at them. "Did my Mao'er say anything wrong? Aren't you Quanshan Daoists bullying the few with the many? Is such behavior truly the conduct of an orthodox sect?"
Chen Changsheng chuckled. "No wonder you couldn't even secure an orthodox title back then. Do people like you even deserve to be called the orthodox Mysterious Gate?"
These words instantly enraged the Daoists.
"Spouting utter nonsense!"
"Presumptuous! Too presumptuous! Strike him down!"
The group of Daoists attacked in unison.
But a moment later, the clouds in the sky suddenly darkened. A layer of gloomy clouds cast a shadow over all of Quanshan.
"Rumble..."
The muffled thunder rolled continuously, accompanied by a soft rustling sound.
"Pitter-patter."
Rain began to fall.
The Spiritual Energy of the thunderstorm surged forth in that moment, looking as if it would completely engulf Quanshan.
"I swear I'll refine you into a corpse puppet!"
Thick killing intent filled the leading Daoist's eyes. Gripping his Peachwood Sword tightly, he wrapped it in a surge of Magical Power. Guided by a Divine Ability, the blade struck out with unparalleled ferocity.
Lihua's gaze burned like a torch. Beneath the darkened sky, a vibrant viridian light seemed to flash within its pupils.
It stared calmly at the charging Daoist.
As Mao'er raised its head...
A bolt of lightning crashed down.
"Boom!"
Resembling a Heavenly Tribulation, the brilliant lightning swept down from the heavy clouds, hurtling straight toward the cultivator.
The surging Daoists suddenly sensed that something was terribly wrong. Their hair stood on end.
"A-a Heavenly Tribulation?"
Some stared blankly, too stunned to react in time. By then, the lightning was only a few zhang away—impossible to dodge.
"Stop!!"
A somewhat aged voice rang out.
It was accompanied by a Divine Ability, an application of his Arts and Techniques, which formed a magical barrier that enveloped the Quanshan disciples in front of him.
Blocked by the Divine Ability, the lightning failed to harm the Quanshan disciples in the slightest.
"Greetings, Elder!"
"Elder!"
The disciples quickly bowed their heads in deep respect.
A Daoist dressed in gray robes floated gracefully toward them, a Whisk in his hand. He had a full, round face that exuded an aura of blessed fortune, and his hair was turning white. Every movement he made carried the bearing of a true Immortal.
Lihua's brows twitched. It felt rather displeased.
It watched the lightning fade.
Shifting its thoughts, it looked back up at the heavily clouded sky.
"Fellow Daoist..."
The gray-robed Daoist was just about to speak when he suddenly noticed the surrounding Spiritual Energy of the thunderstorm growing frantic.
His words came to an abrupt halt.
What followed was a brilliant flash of light right before his eyes.
Under his very gaze, a bolt of lightning as bright as a torch tore down from the gloomy clouds.
"Boom!"
A deafening crack of thunder followed.
The gray-robed Daoist was shocked. This strike of the Thunder Art was several times more powerful than the last! The bolt of lightning itself was as thick as a massive tree trunk.
The Daoist hurriedly pulled a Talisman from his sleeve and unleashed a Divine Ability.
"By the Dao's decree, let the spell rise! Let the Talisman rise!"
The Talisman in his hand dissolved into ash. Immediately after, a golden light burst forth, forming a shield above the Daoist's head.
But under the sheer force of the lightning, the golden spell manifested by the Talisman instantly shattered.
"Crack."
A faint sound of shattering echoed out.
The lightning poured down, crashing directly onto the gray-robed Daoist.
At the critical moment, the Daoist used his own Magical Power to form a layer of Astral Qi around his body. This managed to slightly dull the agony of the falling Thunder Art, but it could not block it entirely.
"Elder, watch out!"
"I'll lend you a hand, Elder!"
But the moment the group of Quanshan disciples rushed near, the residual might of the Thunder Art blasted outward, instantly scattering them. One disciple even slipped and tumbled all the way down the stone steps, screaming miserably the whole way down.
"Ah..."
A wretched scream tore from the Quanshan elder's throat.
When the lightning faded, he was still gripping his Whisk. A faint golden glow lingered on his skin, but his robes had been blown to shreds. His white hair was scorched and filthy, and half of his beard had been burned away. Looking like this, he appeared even worse off than a beggar on the streets.
Compared to his earlier Immortal bearing, it was a difference like heaven and earth.
