Immortal Travel of Longevity

Chapter 904: Unwilling to be a Blade

A heavy rain washed over Quanshan.

The general lay on the ground, his gaze fixed on the dim sky above.

The Heavenly Tribulation had receded, but the dark clouds lingered. They brought rain, and as the drops fell into the general's eyes, the crimson hue within them seemed to wash away.

Chen Changsheng stepped forward and stood beside him.

The general looked at him and said, "This Gu... will not forget this kindness..."

With those words spoken.

The general closed his eyes and fainted, likely from utter exhaustion.

Lihua also approached the general.

But when it touched the man's skin, Lihua felt a sudden chill pierce straight through its chest.

"So cold..."

Lihua smacked its lips and hurriedly darted back to Chen Changsheng's side.

Chen Changsheng rubbed its head and said, "Zombies are yin and cold by nature."

Lihua ducked its head and said no more.

Chen Changsheng then turned his head and walked toward Quanshan's Sect Master True Man.

The Immortal Sword still rested against his throat.

Sect Master True Man's expression was exceedingly grim. By now, he knew he was powerless to reverse heaven.

He gritted his teeth and threw himself forward, intending to impale himself on the Immortal Sword and end it all.

But Chen Changsheng stopped him.

Sect Master True Man glared fiercely at Chen Changsheng. "You won't even let me die? After all this, do you still wish to humiliate this poor Daoist?!"

Chen Changsheng shook his head. "This Chen hasn't even asked his questions yet. How could I let you die so easily?"

Sect Master True Man stared at him. "Don't even dream of getting a single word out of me!"

Seeing his stubbornness, Chen Changsheng paused and asked, "Does the True Man really mean that?"

Sect Master True Man's attitude remained resolute.

Seeing this, Chen Changsheng looked up and dispelled the Arts and Techniques.

"Since that is the case, This Chen will release your bindings. The sword is right in front of you. Sect Master True Man may slit his own throat; This Chen will not stop you."

However, this moment proved torturous.

That split-second courage had suddenly snapped, and finding it again was no easy task.

He looked at the Immortal Sword before him and fell silent.

"The True Man doesn't seem very determined," Chen Changsheng noted.

Sect Master True Man raised his head to glare at Chen Changsheng. "Fiend! When has this poor Daoist ever known fear?!"

He thrust his neck forward, dragging it across the sword's tip.

A bloody gash appeared.

Blood poured out.

With a muffled gurgle, Sect Master True Man collapsed to the ground, his blood dyeing his robes crimson.

The sect master of Quanshan had met his end.

"Hmm..."

Chen Changsheng looked on.

Even he hadn't expected the sect master to be so decisive in that moment.

But it didn't matter. Chen Changsheng didn't feel a shred of pity for the sect master's death. He already had his plans; after making such a scene today, Quanshan was bound to lose a few people.

However, the sect master's absolute resolve only made Chen Changsheng more curious.

Judging by the decisions the sect master had made during their fight just now, he was definitely a careful man. People like that were usually terrified of dying, yet he had chosen death so decisively.

Just what secret was he hiding? What made him so eager to die?

There was likely a great deal hidden beneath the surface.

Seeing these ancient characters, Chen Changsheng had already known this was no ordinary matter.

The situation on Quanshan was probably vastly different from Qingxian Temple. The key lay in whoever stood behind them.

Because of this incident, Chen Changsheng realized just how different Quanshan was. Who would have thought an Immortal Mountain could harbor so many corpse puppets—so many that it took the Heavenly Tribulation to cleanse the mountain entirely?

Chen Changsheng waited a moment longer, but no older figures emerged to stand up for the sect. He found it a bit of a pity.

"I even forced their sect master to his death, yet the person behind this still manages to keep their composure."

Chen Changsheng sighed softly and sheathed his sword.

He turned around and looked at the ancient zombie lying behind him.

This general's surname was Gu?

It must have been his surname in life, though there was no telling what era he hailed from.

He would have to ask him properly once he woke up.

.

.

Gu Jiangshi felt as if he were dreaming.

In his dream, he escaped the restraints that had tortured him for thousands of years and shed the countless ancient characters inscribed on his body.

The overwhelming thrill of that moment jolted him awake.

When he opened his eyes again, he found himself in an inn room, completely peaceful and quiet.

And his Broadsword rested right beside the bed.

Lihua, who had been basking in the sun on the windowsill, opened its eyes. It yawned and said to the ancient zombie, "You're awake?"

Gu Jiangshi muttered to himself, "It wasn't a dream..."

The ancient characters on his body were truly gone.

He was completely free of those restraints!

"Lihua will go fetch Mister Chen. Stay here and don't run!"

Leaving those words behind, Lihua slipped through the window into the next room.

Hearing the news, Chen Changsheng came over. He glanced at the man from the doorway, then walked in and sat down on a chair by the table.

"How do you feel?"

Gu Jiangshi paused. He clenched his fist and said, "Very well."

"What is your name?" Chen Changsheng asked.

Gu Jiangshi blanked for a moment. After some thought, he replied, "Gu Jiangshi."

Chen Changsheng gave a slight nod. "The path of ancient zombies faded from history long ago. This Chen is quite curious about you."

Gu Jiangshi looked at Chen Changsheng. "You helped me."

Chen Changsheng said, "You could say that."

Gu Jiangshi said, "I can promise you three things. What do you think?"

Chen Changsheng looked at him and said, "If This Chen can accomplish something myself, why would I seek your help?"

Gu Jiangshi lowered his head, as if understanding Chen Changsheng's meaning.

But he was unwilling. He didn't want to live under someone else's roof and become another's blade.

"We can discuss this later. Why don't you tell This Chen what happened to you?"

Gu Jiangshi nodded. "In life, I was a general..."

Chen Changsheng listened calmly.

As for exactly how many years had passed, Gu Jiangshi couldn't clearly remember after enduring such dark, endless imprisonment.

He was once a commander of the Southern Dynasty. Born into a family of military officers, he practiced martial arts from a young age. Later, he slaughtered his way through battlefields, repeatedly earning military merits. By his thirties, he had become a general. His life had been spent on horseback, guarding the Border Pass and fighting countless battles—it should have been a glorious life.

But in his third year as a general, enemy cavalry invaded the borders, and he died in the ensuing war.

The man who killed him was Prince Su of the Wu Dynasty, a legendary figure.

He had thought his life would simply end there.

Just as when a person dies, the lamp goes out; everything was meant to fade away into nothingness.

But one day, he opened his eyes once more...

His body was covered in painted ancient characters, and three talismans were stuck to his shoulders. He couldn't decipher a single word written on them.

He was awake, yet he couldn't speak or move. He possessed thoughts, but he couldn't control himself.

He didn't understand why he had returned from the dead.

It wasn't until the voices around him reached his ears that he realized he had been refined into a puppet. That was also when he heard the word 'zombie'...
