Ruyi glared at him furiously. "Just what are you trying to do?!"
Ping'an looked at his sister's furious expression and let out a breath. "Sister, just leave this alone. This is my destiny. Our parents didn't name me Ping'an just to hope that I alone would be safe."
Ruyi stared him down, her chest heaving with anger.
"Scram!"
Ruyi snapped. "Get the hell out of here! Fine if you won't leave with me! Once I slaughter every last one of your subordinates, you'll have no choice but to follow me anyway!"
A bitter smile touched Ping'an's face.
He stood up and dusted himself off.
"I'll be going, then."
He stepped forward and headed for the door.
"Are you a dog?! I tell you to scram, and you actually go?!"
Ping'an paused. "You don't need to persuade me anymore, Sister. What I am doing now has nothing to do with the Imperial Court, nor is it for the Prince. Only by doing this can the world finally see peace."
He didn't look back as he continued outside.
Ruyi darted forward, grabbed him by his robes, and forcefully dragged him right back inside!
"Sister, Sister! What are you doing?!"
"You're still trying to play the brooding martyr?! I haven't been a bandit for just a day or two—you think you can pull these tricks on me?"
Ping'an's stoic facade instantly crumbled. "Sister, can you please act your age?" he said, caught between laughing and crying. "I already walked out the door! How could you just yank me back in?"
Ruyi delivered another kick to his backside.
"Spit it out clearly, and stop speaking in riddles! If you don't explain everything today, don't even think about walking out that door!"
Ping'an opened his mouth, then lowered his head. "I'm not saying a word, even if you beat me to death!"
"Then I'll beat you to death!"
With that, Ruyi slammed a fist into Ping'an's back.
Ping'an instantly collapsed, struggling to catch his breath.
It took a long moment for him to recover. He looked up at his sister in absolute disbelief. "You actually hit me?!"
"It is perfectly natural for an older sister to discipline her younger brother! You got a problem with that?!"
"..."
Ping'an gasped for air. "I yield."
"Then start talking! Explain everything right now!"
Ping'an fell silent for a long moment before finally raising his head. "Let's find somewhere else."
Ruyi narrowed her eyes and sneered.
A sudden chill ran down Ping'an's spine. "Don't look at me like that, Sister. It scares me."
"You've grown older and bolder. Now you even dare to keep secrets from your own sister."
"I was just about to tell you."
"That's not what you said a moment ago."
"..."
Ruyi found a quiet room, completely isolated from anyone else.
Only then did Ping'an begin. "This goes back a long time, to before The Late Emperor passed away..."
Ruyi frowned but kept listening.
Yan Ruchu had set numerous plans and arrangements in motion to ensure that absolutely nothing could go wrong.
Among these plans, the people of the jianghu were an uncontrollable factor.
In his early years, he had relied on the power of jianghu forces to enter the Imperial Palace himself, so he would never allow such a thing to happen again.
However, he couldn't eliminate the threat of these jianghu wanderers in a short time.
Wealth and beauties were not enough to control the jianghu.
Yan Ruchu understood this principle perfectly. To make them yield, he naturally had to use other methods. He needed them to submit willingly to ensure there were no hidden dangers in the short term!
And the person he chose for this task was Wang Ping'an.
Ruyi paused at those words and furrowed her brow. "Wait a minute. You're saying The Late Emperor chose you, but how could he have predicted the situation with the Fiend Blood Path?"
Ping'an looked at his sister. "I've told you before. Throughout all of history, there have been few emperors who could compare to The Late Emperor."
Ruyi froze. "The Fiend Blood Path was his arrangement too?!"
Ping'an nodded.
"His Majesty wanted to drive these people of the jianghu to utter despair," he continued. "Then, I would step in and lead them to rise back up."
A chill swept down Ruyi's spine.
So, all of this was nothing but a calculated trap?
She suddenly realized how ridiculous the martial artists of the Fiend Blood Path were. They thought they had found a safe haven, entirely unaware that the moment they set foot inside, they were walking right into someone else's snare.
Ruyi lowered her head, deep in thought for a long time.
"Let me think..."
Ping'an stayed silent, waiting for her to speak.
Ruyi's mind raced. Suddenly, she looked up at Ping'an. "You can't pull this off alone!"
In her eyes, Ping'an was entirely unqualified for this!
His meager swordsmanship was utterly insignificant in the jianghu.
Ping'an stood up and rested a hand on the sword at his waist. "You can test that, Sister."
Ruyi furrowed her brow. She snatched up her Long Spear from the side and faced him.
The two locked eyes, the atmosphere suddenly growing tense.
Ruyi tightened her grip on her spear.
They stood in a standoff for a long time.
Ping'an made his move. A sharp ring of a drawn blade echoed through the room.
Ruyi's eyes burned like torches as she thrust her spear forward.
"Clang!"
A flash of light suddenly erupted.
Ping'an stepped to the side, parrying the Long Spear with the flat of his blade.
The intense rebound knocked the Long Spear right out of Ruyi's hands, leaving the webbing between her thumb and index finger numb with pain.
"Clatter!"
The Long Spear hit the floor, and a sword tip was already hovering right in front of Ruyi's eyes.
Ruyi looked at the blade in surprise.
Ping'an looked at her. "How was that, Sister?"
Ruyi let out a soft sigh. "The world really has changed. A younger brother can actually beat his older sister now."
Ping'an quickly sheathed his sword. "No, Sister, it was just sparring, just a spar. How could I ever..."
Ruyi waved him off. "I know."
She let out a breath and looked up at him. "I'm happy."
Despite saying she was happy, her eyes had grown rimmed with red.
Ping'an opened his mouth and hurriedly stepped forward to comfort her.
Unexpectedly, Ruyi snatched his sword with one hand, and in the blink of an eye, she rested the blade right against his neck.
Ping'an froze.
Ruyi looked at him and said, "Like I said, you can't pull this off."
Ping'an stared at her. "Sister, how can you cheat like this?!"
Ruyi lowered the sword and slid it back into the scabbard at his waist. "You don't know shit. Feigning weakness to lure in the enemy is playing dirty, but there will always be someone out there willing to play dirtier than you!"
Ping'an was momentarily speechless. Ruyi took two steps back and sat down. "I'll help you!"
Looking into her eyes, Ping'an suddenly felt that his sister had changed.
Indeed.
He really had misunderstood her.
After surviving in the jianghu for so many years, how could she still be that same naive little girl? She had seen every filthy, underhanded trick in the book. A sheltered idler of the Imperial Court like him couldn't possibly compare.
Just as he was thinking this...
A sudden burst of footsteps echoed from downstairs.
Ping'an paused, moved to the window, and peeked outside.
Ruyi stiffened as well and immediately grabbed her Long Spear.
"It's that guy with the modao!" Ping'an frowned. "Shangguan Ningjing is here too."
Ruyi, however, just smiled. "Well, now you have no choice but to agree."
