His wife was severely ill in bed at home, so at the time, he only took a quick look around and planned to leave immediately. He couldn't afford to be late, or she would grow anxious waiting.
But halfway back, he spotted a small stall selling medicinal herbs.
It had the exact herbs he so desperately needed.
Unexpectedly, before he could even ask the price, the stall owner recognized at a glance that he was a human, not a demon.
The stall owner didn't make things difficult for him; he merely asked how he had managed to get inside.
"I had merely wandered in by mistake," Master Wei said. "Once the stall owner understood, he didn't give me any trouble. He even gave me the herbs for free and took me to the Demon Bureau. According to him, the mist was highly unusual. It was very difficult for ordinary humans to enter or leave, so the only option was to seek out the Demon Bureau. Thus, I went with him."
"But once we arrived at the Demon Bureau, I was given a terrible fright."
"Most of the demon bailiffs there were fierce beasts that had gained sentience. They had vicious, terrifying appearances with bloody maws and bared fangs. I was scared out of my wits."
"I was interrogated like a criminal. My surname, my given name, where I lived, what I did for a living, and so on—I confessed to all of it."
"At the time, I was too terrified to know what to do, but I was even more worried about my wife. With her constantly on my mind, I braced myself and flatly refused."
"I thought I would meet a grisly end, but surprisingly, they didn't make things difficult for me. Instead, they gave me a waist token and said I could come back in the future. Only then was I escorted out by the demon bailiffs."
Wei Jingming let out a long breath and said, "Looking back on it now, I still find that experience incredibly wondrous."
Chen Changsheng asked, "Then what made you decide to stay here later on?"
Wei Jingming said, "Later, relying on the waist token, I no longer lost my way in the mist. I returned partly out of curiosity, and partly because some medicinal herbs were difficult to find in the mortal mountains."
"As I came and went more frequently, I gradually came to understand this place. The ferocious demons of legend were actually not that terrifying, and only then did I let go of my apprehensions."
"The reason I stayed was because, one day, a superior officer from the Demon Bureau sought me out. He asked again if I was willing to become a schoolmaster here. At the same time, he recommended a demon doctor to me. This doctor was highly skilled in medicine; in just a few days, he cured my wife's chronic illness. And so, out of gratitude for their kindness, I remained here."
Wei Jingming took a deep breath and said, "However, while it started because of that debt of gratitude, later on, it was simply because I wanted to stay."
"After coming here, on one hand, I experienced a sense of detachment from worldly strife and enjoyed the leisurely, peaceful life of this place. But on the other hand, I also sensed something different."
"The Demon Market is filled with demons. While most are reasonable and understand the rules, a large portion remains barbaric and full of bestial nature. At their core, they are wild beasts of the mountains. They have never received elementary learning, nor have they ever known the truths of the world. Ignorance makes them unreasonable, much like illiterate, wicked peasants in the countryside who are deeply poisoned by vicious mountain customs."
Chen Changsheng looked at Wei Jingming and said, "Master Wei's summary is very apt."
"I am humbled."
Wei Jingming gave a self-deprecating laugh. "I am just a teacher of elementary learning, lacking any great abilities. You praise me too highly."
He then added, "As a teacher of elementary learning, my duty is to enlighten and open minds. Truth be told, I have always harbored some ambitions of my own. I always felt I had much knowledge in my heart but nowhere to apply it. After staying here for a long time, I figured out a few things. I thought that if I could guide these demons onto the right path, preventing them from being poisoned by vulgar worldly customs, and helping them understand etiquette and the rules of how the world works, wouldn't that be a deed of great virtue? My own heart's ambition could be realized as well. Wouldn't that be a wonderful tale?"
"Having thought all this through, I stayed."
Chen Changsheng said, "Master Wei is an upright man."
Whether it was righteousness or selfish motives, he hid absolutely nothing. This Master Wei truly lived up to his title as a schoolmaster.
Wei Jingming said, "You think too highly of me."
He had ambitions in his heart, yet he was always humble. He wasn't like those who put on airs. From his words and the expression in his eyes, one could feel a genuine sincerity, as if he truly understood his own exact worth—never placing himself too low, nor setting himself high above others.
Chen Changsheng smiled. "Not at all. Many literate and educated men in this world have high standards but little ability. For someone to be as self-aware and humble as Master Wei is truly rare."
Hearing this, Master Wei felt a bit embarrassed. He gave a light cough to cover his awkwardness.
He lived a very genuine life. When praised, he felt a bit of pride in his heart and didn't try to hide it.
Truth be told, to put it nicely, he was upright and reasonable; to put it harshly, he was just a stubbornly honest man.
Recovering his wits, Master Wei suddenly realized he was running out of time.
"Oh dear!"
He slapped his forehead and said, "I'm afraid I can't chat with you any longer. This class isn't over yet."
Chen Changsheng smiled. "Go on ahead, Master Wei. This Chen will just wander around for a bit. We can chat later."
"Then it's a promise."
"Mm."
Master Wei hurriedly rushed back to his classroom.
Chen Changsheng smiled. Looking at the little demons in the hall, he felt a sense of gratification in his heart, as if he were seeing the future of the demons in this Mortal World developing in a positive direction.
Having parted ways with Master Wei for the time being, Chen Changsheng exited the academy and headed in the direction of the Demon Bureau.
The area wasn't large, so finding the place was easy enough.
Without walking for long, Chen Changsheng arrived at the entrance of the Demon Bureau.
The architecture of the Demon Bureau here shared many similarities with the Magistrate's Office in the Mortal World. Two stone tigers were placed at the entrance, looking majestic and domineering.
Standing guard at the entrance to the office were two demon bailiffs.
The moment the two demon bailiffs saw Chen Changsheng, they immediately frowned.
They each gripped the long sabers at their waists, raising their guard against the person before them.
Before the two demon bailiffs could speak, Chen Changsheng said, "This Chen is a wandering warlock. Passing through, I heard of the matters in this mountain, so I came in to take a look. Seeing how prosperous and interesting this place is, I took a sudden fancy to chatting with the superior officer here. Thus, I have come to pay my respects, and I hope you two demon bailiffs can announce my arrival."
Stepping forward, the two demon bailiffs wore solemn, ferocious expressions that carried immense pressure. They said, "Cultivators of the Mortal World are not permitted to enter our Demon Market. If you wandered in by mistake, leave immediately! Otherwise, we will drive you out by force!"
As they spoke, the two demon bailiffs were already poised to strike, tightening their grips on the long sabers at their waists.
