"What happened in the Fiend Blood Path?"
"The Wang siblings broke free of the chessboard. They split off to establish their own faction with members of the jianghu, founding the North-South Martial Alliance to resist the oppression of the princes and the Imperial Court."
Chen Changsheng paused slightly at this. "Ping'an and Ruyi?"
Tang Mingjing nodded.
Chen Changsheng thought for a moment before asking, "Wasn't Ping'an working for the Imperial Court?"
"There is something you don't know, Mister," Tang Mingjing said. "Lord Wang's assignment to the Fiend Blood Path was a trap. The people who sent him intended for him to die. Returning would only subject him to further persecution, so he might as well rebel and sever ties with the Imperial Court."
Chen Changsheng fell deep into thought.
He shook his head. He didn't think Tang Mingjing was right.
"Was I mistaken, Mister?" Tang Mingjing asked.
Tang Mingjing considered this thoughtfully.
He didn't know the exact details himself, but if Mister Chen said so, he really needed to reevaluate the situation.
Chen Changsheng looked at Tang Mingjing. "There is something This Chen wishes to ask you."
"Please ask, Mister."
"Is the time Yan Ruchu is waiting for almost here?"
Tang Mingjing paused before answering. "Soon. A year at the shortest, and not much longer at the most. That is my estimation, though I cannot guarantee there won't be unforeseen changes."
"Is that so."
Chen Changsheng nodded. "Thank you."
Tang Mingjing nodded, then asked, "Are you going to see my sworn sister, Mister? She has missed you for a very long time."
Chen Changsheng paused, then nodded. "I am heading there now."
"I have matters to attend to and cannot step away," Tang Mingjing said. "I will have a shopkeeper guide you there, Mister. Please forgive the slight."
"Go about your business. There is no need to worry about This Chen."
Chen Changsheng went downstairs and followed a shopkeeper toward the Tang Manor.
The Tang Manor was massive—almost unimaginably so.
Its scale was grander than even the current Chancellor's Manor. One could easily get lost just taking a walk through it.
"We have arrived, Mister Chen."
Chen Changsheng nodded, but paused just as he was about to step through the gates.
After a moment of thought, he shifted his appearance back to an old man.
He then entered the Tang Manor.
Once inside, a steward took over guiding him. The front courtyard steward handed him off to the rear courtyard steward. Only after passing through the hands of one shopkeeper and two stewards did Chen Changsheng finally see Miss Yun.
The rear garden was lush with plants and flowers. A great number of fish swam through a pristine pond, their red and yellow scales giving off a vibrant, festive air.
A gray-haired Yunxiang stood by the water's edge, tossing pinches of fish food into the pond.
Her gaze was somewhat vacant, as if she were lost in thought.
Then, the very next moment—
"Splash!"
A fish suddenly leapt from the water.
"Sister!"
This gave Yunxiang quite a fright. She patted her chest, breathing a sigh of relief. "Hongjin, you scared me half to death."
Yu Hongjin grinned. "I got you, didn't I?"
Yunxiang gave her a light swat and turned her head away.
Yu Hongjin grabbed Yunxiang's hand. "What are you thinking about, Sister Yun? Why do you look so gloomy?"
Yunxiang poked her forehead. "You're so little, yet you have so many questions."
Yu Hongjin smacked her lips. "I can't even ask?"
She paused before a look of realization dawned on her. "Ah, I know! You must be thinking about Mister Chen again, Sister Yun. Am I right? Am I right?"
Yunxiang's heart jumped. She swatted the girl again. "Don't spout nonsense."
Seeing Yunxiang's reaction, Yu Hongjin knew she had hit the mark.
"Oh..."
She muttered under her breath, thinking that Sister Yun wouldn't admit it even if beaten to death. She was far too stubborn.
"I heard Lihua mention before that Mister Chen would return after three years," Yu Hongjin said. "If we count the time, it should be this year. Probably in these next few days. Maybe Mister Chen will come find you as soon as he gets back, Sister Yun."
Yunxiang's face flushed slightly at those words. "Don't talk nonsense. Who is Mister Chen, and who am I in comparison? Don't say such things again."
Yu Hongjin raised an eyebrow, looking genuinely confused. "That's not it, Sister Yun. Don't you really like Mister Chen? Besides, Mister Chen seems to like you too. Why draw these boundaries?"
Yunxiang pursed her lips and stroked Yu Hongjin's head. "You don't understand, Hongjin. These are matters for adults."
Yu Hongjin crossed her arms. "So I'm just a kid, huh?"
Yunxiang paused, offering a dry laugh in response.
Yu Hongjin smacked her lips again before shaking her head. "I just don't understand you people."
She crouched down, picking up some fish food to feed the fish in the pond.
"This Chen doesn't understand sometimes, either."
Yu Hongjin froze at the sudden voice.
She and Yunxiang turned to look.
An old man had quietly arrived beside them. He reached out, taking the fish food from Yu Hongjin's hand. Looking at her, he said, "Where have you ever seen a fish feeding fish?"
Yu Hongjin stared blankly for a long moment before stammering, "C-Chen... Mister Chen!"
Yunxiang stood, gazing at the slightly aged man.
She opened her mouth, but couldn't bring herself to utter a single word.
"When did you get here, Mister Chen?" Yu Hongjin asked.
"I arrived right when you were speaking," Chen Changsheng said with a smile.
"Ah!" Yu Hongjin was taken aback. "Does that mean you heard everything?"
"I did."
"Actually, Hongjin is right. Some things are just unclear," Chen Changsheng said. "But your Sister Yun is right, too. These are matters for adults. Besides, what's so bad about being a kid? Some people want to be one but can't."
Yu Hongjin smacked her lips. Still reeling from the shock, she had no idea how to respond.
Chen Changsheng patted her head. "Go play."
Yu Hongjin nodded blankly. She quickly got up and walked away, looking back over her shoulder every few steps. She didn't say a word, likely still processing what was happening.
Chen Changsheng straightened up, dusting the lingering fish food from his hands.
His gaze then fell upon Miss Yun.
"Long time no see."
Yunxiang recovered her wits a moment later. She opened her mouth, then quickly pursed her lips again. Her eyes darted around in a fluster. Finally, she let out a long breath and said, "Yeah..."
"Long time no see."
Her smile was just as beautiful as always, though today there seemed to be something inexplicable about it.
Chen Changsheng looked at the new streaks of silver in her hair. "You have more white hair now."
Yunxiang nodded, offering a forced smile. "I'm getting old. Everyone gets old."
"I heard Tang Mingjing say Miss Yun was suffering from an ailment of the heart?"
Yunxiang was taken aback. Feeling a little embarrassed, she pursed her lips and said, "Big Brother was just talking nonsense. Pay him no mind, Mister."
"He seemed to say it on purpose," Chen Changsheng said. "He was dropping a hint to This Chen."
Yunxiang didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Seeing Mister act like this, she relaxed slightly and simply said, "Well, don't you deserve it, Mister?"
Chen Changsheng smiled and did not argue.
