Clearance token in hand, Lin Tian moved through the compound’s deeper corridors like something that wasn’t quite there.

He passed the token over detection glyphs one after another, disabling automated arrays before they could ever register his presence. Whoever had designed this security had clearly built it to stop cultivators, not a man carrying a dead captain’s identity and nothing else to give himself away.

The deepest sector finally opened ahead of him. A massive obsidian vault door stood at its center — the inner sanctum, where the mercenaries kept everything worth protecting.

He pressed the blood-stained token against the central rune.

Hiss. Clunk.

The locks disengaged. Heavy doors parted, releasing stale air that smelled of old alchemy and dust. He slipped through before they’d finished opening, melting straight into shadow on the other side.

Dim spirit-lamps lit the chamber beyond. Shelves of alchemical ingredients, crates of spirit stones, racks of weapons lined every wall — the accumulated wealth of years spent extorting and smuggling through this district.

None of it mattered. He was here for one thing.

"System." He kept it silent. "Activate [Insight Eye]. Scan for high-density encrypted spiritual signatures."

The overlay flared to life. Before it could finish locating anything, the hair on his neck rose on its own.

Clap. Clap. Clap.

Slow, sarcastic applause echoed from a dark corner of the vault.

"Quiet for a rat, I’ll give you that." The voice was raspy, dripping with contempt.

A tall, gaunt man stepped into the lamplight, wielding a pair of jagged crimson hook-swords. Pale skin. Eyes that burned with something sadistic underneath the calm surface.

[Insight Eye] locked on instantly.

[Target: Kui ’The Skinner’ | Status: Inner Vault Gang Leader]

[Cultivation: Qi Gathering Level 6 (Peak)]

[Threat Level: High. Target specializes in extreme close-quarters assassination and poison-laced weaponry.]

The vault’s real guardian. While Gu Hai played politics up in the auction houses, this man had been left behind to hold the actual treasure — and clearly took the job seriously.

"Gu Hai said the outer security was too lax." Kui spun the hooks lazily, blades hissing through the air. "Felt a fluctuation in the array a while back. Didn’t expect one ragged mercenary to actually make it this far in without an alarm going off. Sneaking in’s the easy part. Getting out’s a different story entirely."

Lin Tian said nothing. He measured angles, distances, the layout of the room instead of wasting breath on words that wouldn’t change how this ended.

"Not much of a talker." Kui laughed, ugly and grating. "Fine by me. I like it when they scream instead of chat."

BOOM.

Stone cracked under Kui’s feet as he exploded forward, full Level 6 speed behind a cross-slash aimed straight at Lin Tian’s throat, crimson Qi wrapped tight around both blades.

To anyone normal, that strike was unavoidable.

But the [Primordial Yang-Tyrant Body] answered differently. Reflexes sharper than they had any right to be at his cultivation level, courtesy of a Level 9 Matriarch’s energy reshaping him from the inside out.

Instead of retreating, he stepped forward. Straight into the arc, closing the distance nobody in their right mind would close against twin hook-swords already in motion.

"You’re begging for it!" Kui twisted his wrists, angling both blades to gut him on contact.

CLANG. SCRIIIITCH.

The poisoned edges bit into his shoulders, tearing leather — and stopped.

Metal ground against something denser than flesh should ever be, sparks scattering across the dark. The blades locked in place, trapped against muscle that didn’t yield the way muscle was supposed to.

"What are you?!" Kui yanked hard, channeling every scrap of Qi he had left. The swords didn’t budge, jammed as solid as if they’d struck bedrock instead of a man.

"Someone who doesn’t waste time." Lin Tian’s voice stayed flat, unbothered by the blood already soaking through his shoulder.

No spell. No flashy technique. Just a fist, hips rotating for maximum torque, driving up into Kui’s ribcage.

CRACK.

Ribs shattered. The force lifted Kui clean off his feet, blood and teeth spraying from his mouth as the air left his lungs in one violent burst he never fully recovered from.

Lin Tian wasn’t finished.

He caught Kui by the throat mid-air and slammed him down onto a heavy iron table.

SMASH.

The table bowed under the impact. Kui’s aura, moments ago a genuine Level 6 threat, folded completely under the weight of pure physical force. A hand rose, weak, fingers glowing with the beginning of some desperate last spell.

Too late.

Lin Tian’s wrist-blade snapped out with a cold click.

Shing.

One clean motion across the exposed throat.

Squelch.

Blood sprayed the obsidian walls in a wide arc. Kui’s hands flew to his ruined neck, the gesture useless against damage that severe. His eyes stayed locked on Lin Tian’s face, disbelief the last thing left in them before the light went out completely.

A Level 6 gang leader, dead in under ten seconds. The kind of fighter who’d have taken most Outer Sect disciples an hour and a serious injury to bring down.

Lin Tian stood over the body, breathing even. He flicked the blood off his blade and let it retract. The cuts on his shoulders already stung less than they should — his own Yang energy was burning off the poison and sealing the wounds as he stood there, the toxin dissolving before it could do any real damage.

"System. Resume scan."

[Insight Eye Active. High-density encrypted spiritual signature located.]

A golden marker lit up, pointing toward a loose floorboard beneath the ruined iron table.

He crouched and pried it up. A safe sat underneath, sealed with a blood-lock array designed to burn its own contents if tampered with by anyone unauthorized.

He didn’t need a key for this. He grabbed Kui’s still-warm hand and pressed the blood against the locking runes instead, letting the dead man’s own signature do the work.

Click. Hiss.

The array recognized the residual signature and disengaged. The safe popped open.

A single jade slip sat inside, glowing faint dark-green, dense with layered encryption that would take a proper array master weeks to crack without the right key.

He lifted it, weighing the object in his palm. This was it — Gu Hai’s Secret Ledger. Every blackmail record, every smuggling route, every sect elder compromised by black-market dealings, compressed into one small piece of jade capable of rewriting the entire district’s power structure overnight.

He tucked it into his tactical pouch, feeling the weight settle against his hip like a promise finally kept.

He looked around the vault one last time. Perimeter bypassed. Elite patrols eliminated. The vault leader dead on his own table. No alarm triggered anywhere along the way, not so much as a flicker in the compound’s defenses.

A flawless run, exactly the kind he’d need to keep pulling off if he wanted to survive long enough to actually use what he’d taken.

"Lady Yun." He said it quietly to the empty room, something close to a smile crossing his face under the mask. "I have your prize. Now we find out if you’re actually prepared to pay for it."

He melted back into the shadows, leaving Kui’s body cooling on the ruined table, and began the climb back toward the Underworld Queen’s domain.
