Immortality Simulator [Wuxiaworld]

Chapter 620: The Difficulty Of Publishing One’s Work

Ximen Yu's certainty gave Li Fan pause, and his thoughts began to turn inward.

Time flows, and changes follow in order. Is this a natural transformation of the Xuanhuang World itself, or is it the work of some external force?

His first instinct was to think of that elusive figure who was often spoken of but rarely seen—the Heavenly Venerable Dao Teacher.

Who else could it be? If any cultivator within the Xuanhuang World were capable of reshaping heaven and earth so effortlessly, it could only be the creator of the new methodology.

But if my guess is correct, and the Xuanhuang World is on the verge of falling into the Immortal Ruins, why hasn't the Heavenly Venerable Dao Teacher fled? Why has he spent thousands of years tirelessly transforming the world instead?

He remembered that the Heavenly Venerable Dao Teacher would depart the Xuanhuang World just over a decade from now, and the thought led him further still.

Could it be that in my past life, he achieved transcendence precisely by completing this transformation of the world?

The questions flashed through his mind in an instant. Li Fan set them aside for now.

"Brother Ximen, you are truly a genius of extraordinary breadth and vision," he praised unreservedly. "To glimpse the true nature of heaven and earth from such small details—I dare say even a Dao Unity powerhouse would fall short of you."

Ximen Yu looked pleased at first. But when the matter of writing a book came up, his expression faltered and he became evasive, visibly embarrassed.

Only after Li Fan pressed him repeatedly did he reluctantly tell the truth.

It turned out he had nearly completed the full manuscript of An Examination of Mountains and Rivers Through the Ages and was on the verge of publishing it to establish his legacy when the Myriad Immortals Alliance sent him a warning.

The Alliance authorities had deemed much of the content unsuitable for public dissemination and demanded revisions. Yet they did not specify which parts had crossed the line.

Left with no choice, Ximen Yu deleted a portion and resubmitted it.

It was rejected again.

In the end, the thick manuscript was whittled down piece by piece until only a single, lonely essay remained.

"Heh. After that, I lost heart. I just rely on what I've learned to earn a few contribution points. I've shifted my research focus as well.

"Recently I've been studying the flow of earth veins. If you're interested, we could exchange insights, Fellow Daoist." His tone carried a faint note of melancholy.

Li Fan considered for a moment, then asked quietly, "Do you still have a backup of the original manuscript?"

Ximen Yu gave a hollow laugh. "An Examination Through the Ages is the culmination of my life's learning. It's already engraved in my mind. What need is there for a backup?

"The complete version can't be transmitted through the Tianxuan Mirror. But if you truly wish to study it, Fellow Daoist, you're welcome to come find me at Qihong Isle in Leyang Province."

Leyang Province lay in the central-eastern part of the Myriad Immortals Alliance, a dozen provinces away from the Congyun Sea. With teleportation arrays covering the entire route, however, the journey wouldn't take long.

Li Fan agreed without hesitation.

"One more thing, Fellow Daoist Ximen, regarding those locations from my commission that you couldn't locate. You mentioned they might have fallen within the range of the White Mist Barriers. Could you mark their possible positions on a map for me?"

Ximen Yu sounded surprised. "Don't tell me you're thinking of venturing into the White Mist yourself?"

"Not necessarily. I'm simply keeping the option open." Li Fan chuckled, neither confirming nor denying. "The Lifespan-Devouring White Mist is dangerous. No one ventures in there without good reason. Perhaps one day, when my lifespan is nearing its end, I might consider it."

"Good to hear. I thought I'd found another madman," Ximen Yu muttered.

"Another madman?" Li Fan's interest sharpened at once. "What do you mean by that, Fellow Daoist Ximen?"

"Ah, nothing special. During my field surveys of the terrain, I once witnessed a deranged cultivator running in and out of a White Mist Barrier multiple times. The first time I saw him, he was a young man. By the end, he was old and decrepit. I have no idea whether he's still alive.

"I tried to advise him, but he wouldn't listen — just kept babbling about some great secret hidden within the White Mist Barrier." Ximen Yu snorted, his tone thick with contempt. "What stupidity. How can you study anything if you're dead?"

As he spoke, he transmitted a map marked with several locations.

"I'll take a few more days to work on the remaining ones. If I truly can't manage them, I won't contact you again." With that, the connection fell silent.

Li Fan studied the map carefully. The marked locations were scattered across various regions of Myriad Immortals Alliance territory.

When he had originally selected these sites based on Linghu Chang's memories, they had been fairly concentrated within one or two adjacent provinces.

The dispersal confirmed it. Ximen Yu's research was genuine.

The Xuanhuang World had indeed been torn apart and reshaped.

Li Fan stared at the map for a long time without speaking, then deleted all its information.

For now, I should purchase the materials for the Longevity Pill through the Tianxuan Mirror. Once I've accumulated a sufficient batch, I'll have Liu San pilot the Samantabhadra True Boat into the depths of the White Mist and see what can be found.

If that proves fruitless, I could also consider cultivating them within the wood-attribute grotto-heaven of my Five Elements Grotto-Heavens.

At present, Li Fan's Five Elements Grotto-Heavens domain was still in its embryonic stage. In both size and spiritual qi density, it was nowhere near comparable to the one that had ignited the war between the Myriad Immortals Alliance and the Five Elders Council. Yet its fundamental nature was no different, and its potential was limitless.

Cultivating spirit plants would also benefit the refinement of the laws within the wood-attribute grotto-heaven. It's just that everyone has their own specialty...

Li Fan's thoughts drifted to Chen Ying of the Medicine Hall, a Nascent Soul cultivator from the Congyun Sea.

Ever since he was conscripted into the Five Elements Grotto-Heavens, there had been no news of him.

Unlike in his previous life, Li Fan had issued a warning in time, and Chen Ying had not yet perished. But contact with him had become impossible.

He should still be inside the Five Elements Grotto-Heavens. I wonder what he's been doing.

Li Fan also recalled that around Anchor Year 38 in his past life, the Myriad Immortals Alliance's massive extraction of resources from the Five Elements Grotto-Heavens had caused its elemental balance to collapse, leading to its destruction.

I wonder if they'll make the same mistake in this life.

He had no clear understanding of why the Myriad Immortals Alliance was drawing on the grotto-heavens' resources at such an extreme scale. But judging from Chen Ying's continued silence, the Alliance's operations inside had not ceased.

After a moment, Li Fan gave a slight shake of his head and let the matter go.

He was about to return to Embodiment Island when a notification came through the Tianxuan Mirror.

Immortal Eminence Hong Xi, the former Island Master of Myriad Immortals Island who had spent years conscripted at the headquarters of the Myriad Immortals Alliance, had finally returned.

He was summoning Li Fan, his Secretary-Envoy, for an immediate audience.
