Chapter 8: Chapter 8: Gwen’s Parents
Derrick had already done the math.
If he decided to go without a scholarship, tuition fees ran a hundred thousand SC a semester for those who were qualified to enter, and even scholarship students still paid extra for pills and private coaching.
That alone was enough to drain all of their family’s resources.
Derrick had a system with a shop full of ten-thousand-SC price tags mocking him from the inside of his own skull.
What’s more twisted is that all the items were blacked out, making him unable to access them for now.
Derrick wasn’t about to hand Rebecca a second bill on top of the first.
"The school can wait for now; I have a plan," he said, which wasn’t a lie, technically, since the plan currently consisted of surviving long enough to have one.
"If what I am planning pans out, you might not even need a straining job. And by next year I might not even need a scholarship to enter."
"If the novel does not work, I will look for something else."
Derrick was trying his best to keep Rebecca from asking for the link again. He was a bit embarrassed by the thought of her reading one of his books.
It was weird.
He had tens of best sellers.
Millions of readers.
And here was... scared of what she might think of the book he will write.
He never cared about someone’s opinion on his creation, so now all of a sudden he was eager to have her approval.
"Ah, my baby boy." Rebecca felt her eyes moistening, overwhelmed by the care he was showing.
Even though he had lost all of his memory, the fact that he was willing to do all of that for her meant a lot more than Derrick could imagine.
"Come on, you should get ready, though. It is about time we leave for Gwen’s house." He had already told her about his encounter with her, minus the unpleasant company they had.
"Yeah, she should be leaving for the academy soon." Derrick looked at the clock and rushed to the bathroom with a set of fresh clothes. "What about Cassie?"
"She went out to play with her friend at her house; she should be home by the time we come back." Rebecca showed a dangerous smile when she spoke about Cassie going out that even made Derrick take a step back.
She walked away while slowly whispering to herself. "That girl better not break someone else’s hand."
Derrick’s wardrobe was a mess, but he managed to find a proper outfit that completed his look.
He came out dressed in black cargo pants, a gray-white jacket, and a pair of matching shoes. His outfit was completed by an analog watch that looked simple yet unique.
After all, with how advanced the world was, no one ever wore a watch. Let alone one like that, people had to raise their heads and see a digital clock hovering in the air, showing the time. The digits of the clock were enclosed in the shape of a pill.
But for someone as old school as Derrick, his outfit was incomplete without one.
"Let’s go..." He stepped out of the room and froze when he saw Rebecca. She was wearing a beige-colored one-piece sweater with a turtleneck that reached below her knees.
She looked so breathtaking in the dress that highlighted her entire figure and the necklace that graced her slender nape.
"How am I looking?" Rebecca’s question snapped him out of his daze.
He smiled, with a faint blush on his cheeks. "You look beautiful."
How embarrassing. I did not expect to stare like that; fortunately, she did not mind it.
"My, my. You look handsome too, dear." Rebecca covered her face with her free hand and chuckled before stepping forward and sliding her hands around his right arms. "Let’s not waste any more time, shall we?"
...
Gwen’s house was three times the size of theirs.
It sat behind an actual gate, with an actual driveway, the kind of property that made a statement just by existing.
Derrick wasn’t impressed.
He used to live in a place twice this size, once.
But as he looked to the side, he was surprised to see that Rebecca didn’t look remotely interested in the house either. She rang the doorbell and waited beside him.
The woman who opened it had Gwen’s sharp eyes and none of her warmth. Her smile dropped exactly one inch the moment it landed on Derrick.
"Rebecca, it’s been a long time. And—" a pause just a beat too long—" Derrick. Please, come in."
What is this sudden hostility? Derrick frowned inwardly but walked in with a calm look on his face.
The living room smelled like money and expensive candles. Gwen was sitting beside a broad-shouldered man with kind, tired eyes, mid-conversation, and looked up at the sound of new arrivals.
He had the same hair as hers, but his eyes were blue. She had gotten her eyes from her mother.
Gwen’s father stood immediately, hand already out, like they had done this many times. His smile was genuinely warm right up until he saw the distant, careful look on Derrick’s face.
His hand slowed down in the air but acted as if nothing had happened.
He glanced at his wife. Whatever he saw there made something shift behind his own expression.
So he knows she does not like me. Well, she did not even make an effort to hide it. Derrick thought. But he doesn’t seem to share that opinion with her. I have to say I am surprised to see the roles reversed here.
Isn’t it supposed to be the father of the girl who prevents her from getting close to a guy and not the mother?
"Derrick, How have you been? It’s been a long time since you last visited us." Patrick laughed loudly before bringing the boy to sit beside him on the sofa.
"It has been a while since I visited too, Patrick." Rebecca offered a small basket of pastries with a faint smile on her face.
Kim Lee, Gwen’s mother, took the basket and placed it on the dining table. Despite her polished smile, she acted like she was holding a nuke that she could not wait to throw out of her house.
"Hey, don’t mess with me; I can’t take your jokes, Rebecca." Patrick chuckled dryly before turning his attention to the boy once more.
"Congratulations on getting into the school." Derrick, who had no idea how to deal with such an enthusiastic man, turned his attention towards Gwen. "I need to talk to you. Alone, if that’s alright."
""Alone?"" Two voices echoed in the room at the same time.
