First thing in the morning, Cera had a sizable breakfast before deciding to take the day off again and go read at the mages’ guild. With her medallion, it was easy to open the warded door and enter the library without having to try to call for help. Once there, she began looking for some of the more interesting books she’d seen, such as the introduction to enchanting, basic golemcraft, and potionmaking.
After a few moments of thought, she decided to simply read them there instead of paying ten times for a copy. Once she decided on the first book, potioncrafting, she paid the fee of one steel and sat down to read. A few hours later, she finished, deciding that she was going to attempt to work on potions when she had time. The materials were rather simple, and it was mostly a matter of concentration and visualization, both of which she was better than normal at.
The next book she went for was enchanting basics, as she figured golems would require enchanting to begin with, so it was best to start off with it. Surprisingly, even after several hours of study, she couldn’t wrap her head around enchanting physical objects, as it was so incredibly different than how she formed mana constructs.
To begin with, you had to start off with a plate of material, then carve the patterns of various effects into it, with the three-dimensional shapes requiring layers of mana-resistant material overlaying the conductive material, making it even more complex. In the end, she gave up on enchanting as well as likely giving up on golemcraft, though she took a while to look through that book as well.
As expected, golems required advanced enchanting to create, so she wasn’t going to be managing that anytime soon. With a sigh, she put the books away again before heading back home, remembering to have some dinner this time around before bed.
The following morning, Cera headed to the bank to consolidate some of her coins, depositing forty copper coins, adding four brass to her savings and significantly lightening her load. From there, she headed back to the healers’ guild to get back to work, finding that they were doing reasonably well this time, and there was less of a load, resulting in her only making three copper and a steel.
After her meal of steak and some soup, she returned to her room for the evening. She did, however, find an unwelcome surprise—while she was gone, someone had apparently managed to break into her room, and she no longer had a sword, though her clothes were all still there at least. In the end, she wasn’t too worked up about it, though.
While she’d earned the sword through combat, she didn’t have the skill to use it, and it was more to discourage others from trying to harass her. But she also had a solid staff that she did have some degree of skill using, and she carried it with her at all times. Anyone with any degree of skill would know that a staff was plenty dangerous and leave her alone, and those who didn’t were likely easy to deal with.
The rest of the week passed quickly, with Cera quite excited to meet up with the people at the mages’ guild. Once it was time, she hurried her way over, meeting with the woman who’d originally tested her, who then led her to a meeting room on the second floor where two people were waiting.
When Cera expressed her disappointment at only two people being present, one of them laughed before stating, “Not everyone is here yet; most of us are interested, but we weren’t sure when exactly you’d be here.”
She nodded before apologizing and took a seat, closed her eyes, and began to meditate. Some time later, the same man spoke up and informed her that everyone was present. Focusing back on the room, she found twenty people present, some of whom she recognized from working at the healers’ guild.
Quite surprised at the number of people present, she quickly began collecting the money they’d agreed on, then got to explaining her fire trick. For this group, all but two got it on the first try, though it took more effort for the bit about purifying ice. She spent nearly two hours going over the shielding, as that was what everyone was the most interested in, and it took a while for everyone to get the first modified shield down pat. The combination shield was much more difficult, and only about half managed it properly by the end.
As before, the information about being able to build a tolerance to mana in the body was met with disbelief, though three of the mages present agreed that they could sense much more mana within Cera’s body than normal. Meanwhile, Cera was quite glad she’d limited where the mana was stored, avoiding her tail, as she hadn’t considered that manasight might reveal her. Fortunately, her instincts had saved her.
They spent the entire rest of the day going over mana constructs, and eventually, most present were able to manage a basic shield construct, all of whom agreed that it was revolutionary. Cera couldn’t help but grin at the reception to her most basic form of her specialty, and informed the group that it could, with practice and experimentation, handle any magic.
Upon finishing her lesson, Cera began holding her coin pouch tightly with telekinesis to ensure no one could get into it, then swiftly made her way to the bank again. After depositing most of her money, she had four brass and three silver saved in the bank, and was carrying fourteen iron, twenty steel, and thirteen copper.
This significantly lightened her load, as she’d had over sixty copper before turning it in to the bank, in addition to quite a few brass coins. Now, with far less to risk being stolen, she relaxed significantly and headed back to the inn to enjoy an extra-large meal, including some wine, totalling up to a full copper and two iron.
The following morning, Cera decided to take the day off at first, then realized that so many of the healers taking yesterday off would mean a lot of people needed healing, so she changed her mind. As she’d thought, it was far busier than usual, and she even ended up emptying out her stored mana as well. It did earn her quite a bit, however, as she left with seven copper and eight steel, far more than usual.
As she was quite exhausted from her work, she had a large meal before retreating back to her room. Her sleep was interrupted, however, by the sound of someone entering her room, and she groggily activated her shielding construct. Apparently, that surprised whoever had entered, and a dagger ended up getting stuck in it, and she got a good look at the shocked face of the intruder as her tail thrashed in agitation.
After an instant of hesitation, she launched an ice spike directly into the man’s face, then a second one, seeing as how he had no key, had attacked her, and worst of all, had seen her tail. She quickly threw up an illusion to cover her tail and ears, then took a deep breath and sat up in her bed. Not long after, several people showed up at the open door to her room, drawn by the noise.
She considered herself quite fortunate afterward, as her story of having been attacked was accepted immediately, and no one acted as though she’d done anything wrong. Apparently, once they managed to identify the man, one of them recognized that he’d been caught entering someone else’s room as well, though they’d chased him out as he argued that he’d thought it was his room and it was unlocked.
It didn’t take much effort to get the innkeeper to let them into his room, where Cera also found her missing sword, which she retrieved after explaining its loss earlier. Apparently, her reputation as a healer bought her a great deal of goodwill, making people more likely to believe her. After watching several other people find their own stolen belongings in the man’s room, Cera returned to her own and tried to go back to sleep while they bickered over who should have how much of his money.
