Infinite Awakening: 10,000x EXP Converter!
Chapter 10: [10] Serah Proposition, Seven Days!Alvian was halfway down the rear staircase of the Academy when Serah Garrick stepped out from behind the landing.
She moved like someone who had planned the interception. No hesitation. No awkward small talk. She walked directly into his path and held up her circuitry pad. The display was already active and glowing.
"Your Clearwater Palm generates acid," she said. "Standard Clearwater does not do that. I checked three databases."
The pad screen showed a waveform analysis of the residual energy from his Combat Assessment. There were numbers and graphs that Alvian could not fully interpret. But the conclusions were highlighted in red.
pH 2.1 on contact. Corrosion depth 0.3mm on Rank 1 chitin. Chemical composition: hydroxyl radicals suspended in a pure water carrier medium.
"That is not water manipulation," Serah said. She tapped the screen with her stylus. "That is dissolution."
The staircase was empty. No noble students, no instructors, no witnesses. The rear staircase connected to the maintenance wing of the Academy. It was a route that most students did not even know existed. Perfect place to hide a body...
Alvian instinct was denial. His internal paranoia fired on every cylinder at once. She could report him. She could expose him. She could be working for the Magnus family. She could be a spy gathering intelligence on anomalous Talents. But his rational mind overrode the panic almost instantly. She had no motive to betray him. Her circuitry expertise was genuine. If she had wanted to report his anomaly, she would have gone to Helen Croft, not to him on a hidden staircase.
"I have a proposition," Serah continued when he did not respond. "I help you understand what your Talent is actually doing. You let me study the Clearwater energy signature for my personal research."
She pulled up a second screen on her pad. Diagrams of Essence pathways were hand drawn and meticulously labeled with annotations in tiny precise handwriting. "Essence circuitry is my real focus. Not SunFire combat. The B Rank SunFire Talent is my family legacy and the circuitry work is my rebellion. They want me to be a combat prodigy. I want to understand how Talents actually work at a structural level."
Alvian studied her for a long moment. She was standing with her weight shifted slightly to her left foot. Her right hand gripped the pad a little too tightly. The circuitry wire on her forearms pulsed faster when she was nervous. She was nervous now, but her voice was steady. She had rehearsed this.
"Conditions," Alvian said.
"Name them."
"I do not reveal my Stats. I do not reveal my training methods. I do not discuss anything that happens outside the Academy. You get to observe Clearwater Palm in controlled settings. That is it."
Serah considered for three seconds. "Acceptable. I do not need your Stats. I need your Talent energy signature."
She reached into her jacket pocket. She produced a small quartz crystal, roughly the size of a coin. It was hand cut and the edges were uneven. But it pulsed with a faint blue light when she held it up.
"Communication crystal. Short range voice transmission. I built it myself from salvaged pre Cataclysm quartz networking tech. Retail price is about fifty credits, but I make my own." She pressed it into his hand. "For scheduling sessions. I am in the East Wing laboratory after classes. Come tomorrow."
Alvian pocketed the crystal. "Why me?"
"You could study any Talent in the Academy. B Ranks, A Ranks, students with actual combat potential. Why waste time on an E Rank?"
Serah expression shifted. The nervousness faded, replaced by something harder and more precise. "Because your Talent is doing something it should not be able to do. An E Rank generating hydroxyl radicals at pH 2.1 is like finding a kitchen knife that cuts through steel. It is not supposed to work. Which means either the Academy classification system is wrong, or your Talent is something nobody has seen before." She paused. Her eyes locked onto his. "Either answer is worth researching."
She turned and walked back up the stairs without waiting for a response. Her circuitry pad glowed faintly against her hip as she disappeared around the landing.
Alvian watched her go. Then he checked his System interface. The Pity Accelerator timer pulsed in the corner of his vision. Still active. Still counting down.
He headed for the Warrens.
***
The Lower Warrens had not changed. The bioluminescent wall fluid still pulsed with that sickly iridescent glow. The subway tunnels still echoed with the skittering of metallic teeth on stone.
Alvian moved through the familiar passages without hesitation. His Level 19 body made the descent trivial now. The environmental hazards that had nearly killed him two days ago were inconveniences at most. His enhanced VIT meant the toxic air barely registered. His AGI meant he could navigate the crumbling infrastructure at a dead sprint without risking a twisted ankle.
The first Ironjaw Rat found him near the collapsed subway car where he had fought the nest. It lunged from a ceiling pipe. Its jaws were wide, metallic teeth.
Alvian caught it by the throat with his left hand. He drove Clearwater Palm into its skull with his right.
"Sizzle!"
The acid softened the hide instantly. His grip crushed the weakened bone beneath. The rat died in three seconds.
[Ding!]
[Combat action detected.]
[Random multiplier activated: 3x!]
[Common Roll!]
[Ironjaw Rat Base EXP: 25]
[Multiplier: 3x]
[Total EXP: 75]
[Ding!]
[Roll below 5x detected.]
[Pity Accelerator active! KP gain doubled.]
[Karma Points +2. Current KP: 16]
[The cosmos weeps for your terrible fortune.]
Two KP from a single low roll. The Pity Accelerator was doing exactly what he had paid for.
’Amazing,’ he smiled bitterly.
He killed four more rats over the next two hours. The fights were almost boring now. His stats dwarfed the Rank 2 creatures to the point where combat felt like a chore rather than a survival struggle. Clearwater Palm softened their hides. He finished the job with his bare hands. No weapons or quick thinking needed. just raw, overpowering strength applied with cold efficiency. Smashing their heads was just another routine task for him.
The rolls came in mixed.
[Ding!]
[Random multiplier activated: 12x!]
[Total EXP: 300]
[Ding!]
[Random multiplier activated: 2x!]
[Pity Accelerator active! KP +2. Current KP: 18]
[Wow. The System is starting to feel bad for you. That is rare.]
The 12x gave him three hundred EXP. The 2x gave him fifty EXP and two more Karma Points. His total KP was at eighteen now. He was two away from the Re Roll Token.
Twenty KP. One re spin on the cosmic roulette wheel. A second chance on any roll, individual or pooled. The strategic value for the upcoming tournament was enormous. He could attempt a high risk Gambler Delay on a tournament opponent. If the roll came back garbage, he could re spin for a second shot.
The official tournament announcement had appeared on the Academy bulletin board that morning during the assessment. Single elimination bracket. All newly Awakened students. Seven days. Performance determined class placement, resource allocation, and monthly stipend. Top performers received two hundred credits monthly. Bottom performers received nothing. Welcome to the real world.
Two hundred credits meant Martha medicine for four months. He would not have to risk his life in the Warrens every single week. It meant breathing room, a buffer, time to figure out a longer term solution. But fighting publicly meant exposing his capabilities. The six second clear at the Combat Assessment had already drawn attention he could not afford.
He needed to be strong enough to win without revealing how strong he actually was. The line between looking safely average and looking suspiciously skilled was razor-thin. One wrong move on the tournament platform would bring Helen Croft formal review crashing down on him.
He harvested five rat cores from the kills. Each was worth fifteen to twenty five credits on the black market. Roughly one hundred credits if Hendricks did not try to cheat him. He would. He always did. But even seventy five credits was enough to keep food on the table for another week.
The Pity Accelerator timer pulsed steadily in the corner of his vision. Still counting down. Every second without a low roll was a wasted opportunity.
He emerged from the Warrens into the thirteenth level maintenance tunnels. Tobias Finch sat outside his scrap hut. He noted the rat blood on Alvian’s hands, the lack of a weapon, the unhurried pace of someone who had barely exerted himself.
"You are moving different again," Tobias said flatly. "Faster than yesterday."
Alvian stopped. "People keep saying that."
"Because it keeps being true." Tobias picked up his soldering iron and went back to work on a loose wire. "Tournament is in seven days. Heard the Magnus kid talking about it on his way through the upper market. He has got plans for you."
"Let him plan."
Tobias grunted. The soldering iron hissed. The mechanical arm sparked twice more. Blue white flashes lit up the dim corridor before fading.
Alvian walked home through the thirteenth level neon lit corridors. His mind was already running calculations for tomorrow. The circuitry session with Serah in the East Wing lab. Two more KP needed for the Re Roll Token. The tournament bracket structure. Darius C Rank Magma Talent and what it could do in a sanctioned fight. The two hundred credit stipend that stood between Martha slow death and a future where she might actually survive.
The Pity Accelerator timer pulsed in the corner of his vision. Still active. Still ticking down.
Two more KP. One more low roll with the accelerator running. Then the Re Roll Token. Then seven days to figure out how to win a tournament without letting anyone see what he really was.
