[Reward 3: Enhanced Vitality I]

[Increases physical stamina, recovery speed, and overall bodily endurance. Applies broadly across all physical activity. Effects compound with continued use.]

Jason read it twice, and a slow grin spread across his face before he could stop it.

Broadly across all physical activity.

He didn’t need the system to spell it out any further than that. The phrasing was doing a lot of quiet, deliberate work, and he had a decent guess at exactly which activities from the last twelve hours had probably triggered this one.

"Subtle," he said out loud, shaking his head. "Real subtle."

He sat with the notification for a moment, turning it over the way he turned over every reward, methodically, looking for the practical shape of it underneath the phrasing.

Stamina. Recovery. Endurance.

Those weren’t just bedroom words, even if that was clearly the primary use case the system had in mind. Those were gym words too. Life words. The kind of upgrade that made every physical demand on his day slightly easier to meet, whether that demand came from Ben’s brutal idea of a beginner’s arm day or something considerably more private.

This actually solves a real problem.

He thought back to that morning’s soreness, the ache that had settled into his arms after a single set of curls, the exact kind of fatigue Ben had promised would cripple him by the following day.

If recovery speeds up, that soreness probably doesn’t hit as hard tomorrow. Which means I can actually push harder at the gym without worrying about being useless for a week afterward.

He considered the other angle too, letting himself think it through fully instead of just laughing it off.

And if it applies broadly, that’s not just about tonight or any one specific thing. That’s an ongoing advantage. Every physical demand from here forward gets a little easier to meet. Gym. Long days on my feet. Whatever comes next with Sarah, assuming there’s a next.

He allowed himself a brief, private moment of satisfaction at that thought before moving on.

The system’s clearly been paying attention to more than just my chess habits and my forearms. He shook his head again, equal parts amused and mildly unsettled at how thoroughly this thing seemed to be tracking every aspect of his life.

Whatever. I’m not going to argue with free stamina.

He set the phone down and let himself think through the rest of tomorrow properly, actually planning it out instead of just letting the day arrive and dictate itself to him.

Gym with Ben in the morning. Classes after that. Straight home once they’re done, no detours, no parties, nothing requiring the system’s intervention this time.

Simple. Manageable. A day that belonged entirely to him for once.

He spent the rest of the evening quietly, cleaning up the breakfast plates, running through a few emails he’d been ignoring, and eventually settling into bed early, the exhaustion from the last two days finally catching up to him in a way that felt earned rather than draining.

------

The alarm rang at 6:25 sharp the next morning, and Jason’s eyes opened without any of the usual resistance, the same easy wakefulness he’d been experiencing since the first reward kicked in. He lay there for a second before reaching over and silencing it, letting his mind drift back over yesterday.

Sarah.

Her name arrived first, unprompted, the way it had been arriving more and more often lately.

She said she wasn’t sure what this is yet. Said she wasn’t running though. That’s something.

He turned the memory over slowly, replaying the conversation at the door, the honesty in it, the deliberate difference from how she’d left two nights before.

I can work with that. Uncertain but honest beats certain and hiding something every time.

He got up, showered, and moved through his morning routine at an easy, unhurried pace, the kind of morning that didn’t demand much thought once the big pieces were already settled. Around 7:45 he grabbed his phone off the nightstand and pulled up his messages, thumb finding Ben’s name out of habit now rather than decision.

Jason: gym today?

Ben: obviously. you’re not backing out on me now that you’ve discovered muscles exist

Jason: wasn’t planning on it

Ben: good. same time same place

Jason: see you there

He set the phone down, satisfied, and finished getting dressed, pulling on the same gym clothes from two days ago, the fit still slightly unfamiliar against his upgraded frame in a way he suspected he’d get used to eventually.

He grabbed his bag, checked that he had everything, and stepped out into the cool morning air, locking the door carefully behind him this time, no repeat of that first disoriented night’s oversight.

The walk to the intersection was quiet, familiar now after only two days of doing it, and he found Ben already waiting when he arrived, which was, itself, a small anomaly worth noting.

"You’re early," Jason said, genuinely surprised.

"I’m always early. You’ve just never noticed because you’re usually the one running behind."

"That’s not true."

"It’s extremely true. But we’re not relitigating that today." Ben fell into step beside him as they started toward the gym. "How was your weekend, by the way. You seem different. Lighter or something. Can’t place it."

If only you knew the half of it.

"Weekend was good."

"That’s suspiciously vague."

"It’s accurate."

"Vague and accurate aren’t mutually exclusive, which is exactly what makes it suspicious." Ben glanced sideways at him, clearly fishing, the same instinct Marcus had shown two nights ago at the coffee shop corner. "You gonna elaborate or am I supposed to guess."

"You’re supposed to accept the vague, accurate answer and move on with your life."

"That’s never worked on me before, but sure, we can try it."

Jason huffed a short laugh, shaking his head, and let the topic drop there, comfortable in the knowledge that Ben would circle back to it eventually the same way Marcus had circled back to Vivian, except right now he had exactly zero interest in unpacking any of it before he’d even had his first cup of coffee.

"Anyway," Ben said, apparently deciding to let it go for now, "arms again today, or are we finally doing legs like a couple of responsible adults."

"Absolutely not legs."

"Coward."

"Strategic."

"Sure. We’ll call it strategic." Ben grinned, picking up the pace slightly as the gym came into view ahead of them. "Come on. Let’s go find out if yesterday’s soreness caught up with you yet."

It probably won’t

Jason thought, following him toward the entrance, a small private smile tugging at his mouth that he didn’t bother explaining.

But you go ahead and find that out for yourself.
