Chapter 332 | Existential Contentment [CASTLE BONUS]Chapter 332: 332 | Existential Contentment [CASTLE BONUS]
Kumiko spotted Jordan and her entire body swiveled toward him with such immediate, total focus that it looked magnetic. Her brown eyes expanded to twice their normal size, brightness flooding in like someone had thrown a switch, and her mouth opened into a smile so unreserved and enormous it verged on structural damage. Then she was airborne, her legs straightening with the kind of violent propulsion you saw in Olympic sprinters leaving the blocks, and she crossed the distance between floor and Jordan in one single committed movement.
"JORDAN-KUN!"
The collision happened at chest height. Her arms looped around his torso, her face mashed itself directly into his damp shirt, and the sheer momentum of her enthusiasm rocked him back a full half-step. She weighed approximately nothing. The sensation of holding her was somewhere between catching an armful of warm laundry fresh from the dryer and being physically assaulted by concentrated, undiluted happiness.
"Nnnnnngh," Kumiko made the sound directly into his sternum, something caught between a purr and a moan, her fingers digging into the fabric at his back like she was trying to fuse them together at a molecular level. "You smell like gym and soap and you and I missed you SO MUCH it’s been seven hours and twenty-three minutes and I know because I counted every single one of them because when you’re not around time moves different and slower and—"
Jordan placed his hand on top of her head.
The Headpat trait activated the moment his palm made contact. Heat traveled outward from the point of connection, sinking through her skull and spreading into whatever tightly-wound network of nerves and neurotransmitters kept Kumiko Yamanaka vibrating at her baseline frequency of controlled chaos. Her monologue cut off mid-word. Her grip went slack. Her shoulders descended a full three inches. The sound that emerged from her mouth was small and involuntary and had nothing whatsoever to do with language, something soft and pleased and private that belonged in a dark bedroom at midnight rather than a doorway at five-thirty in the afternoon with witnesses.
"Haaaah..."
Her body went liquid against him, every bit of the rigid, caffeine-fueled tension that normally held Kumiko Yamanaka together dissolving at the point of contact like sugar dropped into hot water. Her weight shifted forward, then kept shifting, her center of gravity abandoning any pretense of self-sufficiency until only his arm around her waist kept her from sliding to the floor in a heap of pink ribbons and existential contentment. Her eyes drifted shut. Her lips parted.
The frantic, vibrating energy that defined every waking moment of this girl’s existence, the constant low-frequency hum of romantic fantasies and cosplay deadlines and emotional spirals that powered her like a nuclear reactor running on pure feeling, all of it powered down like a server shutting off.
The silence was almost loud. What remained was a girl whose brain had gone completely, blissfully, devastatingly quiet, standing in a doorway surrounded by moving boxes with her face pressed into a boy’s chest and nothing happening behind her eyes except warm static.
From the mattress, Chloe watched with the expression of someone observing a lab experiment confirm its hypothesis for the third time this week. She’d been in the middle of taping the bottom of a box labeled "KITCHEN: MUGS AND MISC." when Kumiko had launched herself across the loft, and the tape gun was still dangling loosely from her right hand, forgotten. Her head tilted two degrees to the left. Her blue-streaked hair fell across one eye. She did not push it away.
"You know," Chloe said, her voice carrying the dry weight of someone who had spent the entire afternoon co-signing lease documents and reconciling spreadsheet columns and fielding passive-aggressive texts from Alexis while her boyfriend’s most aggressively devoted admirer tried to fuse with him on a molecular level in front of her, "that really is unfair."
Jordan kept his hand on Kumiko’s head for another three seconds, his palm warm against the crown of her skull where the twin tails split apart, and then gently removed it. The effect was like unplugging a charging cable from a device at ninety percent. Kumiko swayed like a flower in wind, her body searching for the source of warmth that had just been taken away, tilting forward half an inch before her own spine remembered it had a job to do.
Her eyes opened in slow stages, each one revealing a new layer of consciousness returning to the surface. First came spatial awareness. Then object recognition. Then the gradual, dawning realization that she was standing in a room with two other people and had just made a sound that could generously be described as "compromising."
By the time she was fully back online, her cheeks had turned the color of her ribbons and her hands were pressed flat over her face, fingers splayed wide enough that one brown eye was still visible between her index and middle finger, staring at Jordan with an expression that contained roughly equal parts mortification and raw, unfiltered worship.
"You cannot do that when I’m not prepared," she breathed through her fingers, each word slightly muffled by her palms. "You have to warn me. You have to give me, like, a countdown or something. A three-second heads-up minimum. My whole body just... nnngh." She made the sound again, smaller this time, an aftershock. "Everything went fuzzy. I saw colors, Jordan-kun. I literally saw the color of being safe."
"The color of being safe?"
"It’s lavender. With gold edges."
Jordan looked at Chloe. Chloe looked at Jordan. Neither of them had a response to that.
Kumiko’s recovery happened in phases. First came the hands sliding away from her face, each finger peeling back like she was revealing classified information to herself. Then the smoothing of her twin tails, each ribbon adjustment precise enough to measure with calipers. The roll of packing tape that had somehow fused itself to her knee got peeled off and returned to active duty. By the time she picked up where she’d left off about optimal desk angles and figure sight lines, she’d rebooted completely. The previous forty seconds might as well have been a loading screen that nobody was supposed to acknowledge.
Jordan let go of her. She bounced back toward her boxes with the spring tension of a person whose brain chemistry had just been reset to factory settings and was running on pure dopamine momentum.
"Seven boxes are completely done," she announced, pointing at the organized tower against the wall like she was presenting evidence in a murder trial. "Four more just need label verification. This one has all my craft supplies and costume components organized by project category and material type. This one has electronics and cables, and yes, I sorted them by function and length because leaving them random is how you summon chaos into your life. This one has plushies ranked by emotional attachment value with subcategories for—" She stopped at the box marked DO NOT OPEN in pink marker, complete with a skull and crossbones that looked like it had been drawn by someone who really, really wanted you to know they were serious. "This one contains private materials."
"What kind of private materials?"
"Notebooks."
"Your observation notebooks," Chloe said from the mattress. She didn’t look up from her laptop. Her voice had the flat, declarative quality of someone reading a weather report about an incoming hurricane. Approximately twelve different subtexts lived in those three words.
Kumiko’s face went through three shades of red in rapid succession. "They are personal journals documenting my creative process and occasional observations about the people I care about and they are NOT weird, Chloe-chan, Dr. Nakamura says documentation is a healthy coping mechanism when channeled appropriately—"
"She has seven pages on you," Chloe said to Jordan.
Kumiko made a sound like a teakettle reaching critical pressure. "THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION SHARED IN THE SACRED BOND OF FEMALE FRIENDSHIP."
