Chapter 352 | I Forgot the PARADE

Chapter 352: 352 | I Forgot the PARADE

Kumiko typed BLACK TRUNKS into a cell on the spreadsheet labeled JORDAN WARDROBE STATUS and highlighted it green. Jordan watched her do this with the detached fascination of a man observing his own life being organized by someone who cared about him with the thoroughness of a federal audit.

Chloe’s door opened across the hall. Footsteps. The click of her key in Unit 404’s lock, because she’d stopped knocking two days ago on the basis that it was now her apartment too and knocking at your own front door was performative nonsense.

Chloe entered carrying a canvas tote bag, a Brita pitcher she’d apparently decided Jordan’s existing pitcher was inferior to, and a facial expression that communicated she had predicted Kumiko’s presence on Jordan’s couch with a pillow within a margin of error of approximately four minutes.

"She’s here."

"Since four fifty-three. She brought the spreadsheet."

"She brought the spreadsheet to my apartment two hours ago. She’s been circulating it since midnight." Chloe set the Brita pitcher on the counter and the tote bag beside the fridge, then walked to the couch and looked down at Kumiko’s phone screen with the evaluative gaze of someone inspecting architectural blueprints. "Version seven doesn’t account for the parade blocking the walkway between Adventureland and New Orleans Square between three-thirty and four."

Kumiko’s eyes went wide. "The parade."

"The parade."

"I forgot the PARADE." Kumiko lunged for her phone and began typing with both thumbs at a speed that suggested her anxiety had found its fuel source and was now fully operational.

"If we’re in Adventureland at three-fifteen and the parade starts at three-thirty we’ll be stuck behind the rope line for twenty-five minutes minimum and that destroys the timeline for Haunted Mansion at four and I PROMISED myself Haunted Mansion at four because the lighting is best when the sun starts angling and the photos come out spookier."

Chloe sat on the arm of the couch, her thigh pressing against Kumiko’s shoulder, and pointed at a specific cell in the spreadsheet with the tip of her index finger.

"Move Haunted Mansion to two forty-five. Swap it with the Tiki Room, which nobody actually wants to do anyway. We cross through Frontierland before the parade blocks the path, grab churros from the cart near Splash Mountain at three, and park ourselves on the bench by the river until the parade passes. The path stays clear, the timeline holds, and you get your Haunted Mansion photos at four when the sun’s doing what you want."

Kumiko stared up at Chloe. Her lower lip began to tremble. Her eyes filled with moisture that she attempted to blink away through sheer willpower and a visible effort to keep her breathing even.

"You memorized my spreadsheet."

"I proofread your spreadsheet. There’s a difference." Chloe’s hand lifted from where it had been resting on her own knee and moved to Kumiko’s head, her fingers sliding through the hair between her twin tails in a gesture that carried more gentleness than anything Jordan had observed from Chloe in public.

Her fingertips traced down the curve of Kumiko’s skull slowly, methodically, and came to rest on the nape of her neck where they applied the barest pressure. Kumiko’s entire body responded to the contact, her shoulders dropping several inches and her breathing evening out into something slower and deeper.

The change mirrored the way she had reacted to Jordan’s Headpat earlier, but the System interface remained silent, offering no golden text and no notifications about neurochemical attraction metrics. Chloe did not possess a magical trait that induced endorphin release through tactile contact.

What Chloe possessed was the knowledge of when another person needed to be touched, and the willingness to provide that touch at the exact moment it would matter most.

"Okay." Kumiko’s voice came out rough and small. "Version eight by nine o’clock. Then sleep."

"Sleep at nine. I will enforce this."

"Chloe-chan is scary when she enforces things."

"Chloe-chan will take your phone at eight fifty-five and put it on top of the refrigerator where you can’t reach it."

"That’s MEAN."

"That’s logistics." Chloe removed her hand from Kumiko’s neck and stood. She looked at Jordan, and something passed between them that required no words and no System notification and no golden interface to translate. The look said: this girl spent fifteen hours awake planning the perfect day for the three of them because she has never had two people who stayed, and we are going to give her the kind of day that her seven previous relationships never could, and if she cries at the fireworks I am going to hold one hand and you are going to hold the other and we are not going to let go until she stops shaking.

Jordan returned the look with one of his own that said: understood.

"I’m packing the overnight bag," Chloe announced. "Grand Californian, one room, king bed."

Jordan scrolled through the tabs while Kumiko hovered behind the couch. Her chin came to rest on his shoulder, breath warm against his neck. The proximity registered somewhere between his spine and his ribcage, a low-frequency awareness that activated whenever she stood too close and forgot about the physical boundaries she kept promising Dr. Nakamura she was working on. The boundaries existed in theory. In practice, Kumiko had two settings: across the room or directly in his personal space, no middle ground, no transition zone.

Her hair smelled like strawberry shampoo. Jordan filed this information away in the mental category labeled "things I’m noticing but not thinking about."

Chloe sat cross-legged on the kitchen island with her laptop balanced on one knee and a mug of chamomile in her free hand. She had not moved from this position in twenty minutes. The glow of the screen cast blue-white light across her face, turning the streak in her hair from electric blue to something closer to silver. Jordan watched her for three seconds before catching himself and redirecting his attention to the spreadsheet.

"Hotel’s not booked yet," Chloe said without looking up from whatever she was typing.
