Chapter 372 | The Silverware Family Goes on VacationChapter 372: 372 | The Silverware Family Goes on Vacation
"Mama said a factual word. There’s a difference." Isabella opened her menu and scanned it with the speed-reading efficiency of someone accustomed to processing large volumes of text under time pressure. "Order whatever you want. I mean that.
Sofia’s going to eat chicken strips and fries regardless of what’s on the menu because she’s been eating chicken strips and fries at every restaurant since she turned three and she has decided this is her permanent identity."
"Chicken strips are the best food," Sofia said with the unshakeable conviction of a fundamentalist.
Kumiko turned from the water with stars in her eyes, actual stars, or at least the reflection of the fiber-optic ones in the ceiling. "This is the most beautiful restaurant I have ever been in and I want to live here forever and also I need to photograph everything immediately."
She already had her phone out, snapping pictures of the candle, the water, the boats, the fake fireflies, the ceiling, and Jordan’s face in rapid succession.
"Don’t photograph me."
"Too late, you’re already in seventeen pictures and four of them are very flattering." Kumiko angled her phone so Jordan could see his own face illuminated by candlelight, the Mickey ears casting small shadows across his cheekbones. He looked, irritatingly, like someone who belonged in a restaurant like this.
The henley Chloe had chosen caught the blue light in a way that made the gray fabric look almost silver, and his jawline did the thing that Kumiko had documented in her notebook where shadows collected in the hollows beneath his cheekbones and made his face look carved rather than grown.
"Delete it."
"Absolutely not. This is going in the archive." Kumiko clutched her phone to her chest with both hands. "You look like a main character and I refuse to let you pretend otherwise."
Isabella watched this exchange with her chin resting on her palm, her dark eyes moving between them with the focused attention of someone cataloging behavioral data for later analysis.
She didn’t bother hiding her interest. Most people performed a version of casual observation, glancing sideways and pretending they weren’t studying you. Isabella looked directly at whatever interested her and let you know she was doing it.
"You three are fascinating," she said, and the word carried academic weight, like she was labeling a specimen rather than making small talk.
"We get that a lot," Chloe said without looking up from her menu.
"I doubt that. Polyamorous triads are statistically uncommon enough in the eighteen-to-twenty-four demographic that most people in your peer group have never encountered one in person. The ones that do exist tend to be unstable, lasting an average of fourteen months before internal jealousy dynamics collapse the structure." Isabella paused. "You three don’t look unstable."
"We’ve been together for a little while," Jordan said.
"Which makes you either exceptional or too early in the process for the instability to manifest. Either way, the social engineering required to maintain a functional triad while navigating a university environment with its gossip networks and hierarchical social pressures is genuinely impressive. Delgado would love this. She’d probably make you a case study."
"Please don’t tell Delgado," Jordan said.
Isabella’s grin sharpened. "I won’t. But only because watching you navigate her class knowing what I know is going to be significantly more entertaining than any case study."
A waiter materialized beside the table and began taking drink orders. Water for both Chloe and Jordan, their requests delivered in near unison. Kumiko ordered a Shirley Temple and made a point of clarifying that she wanted extra cherries because the cherries, she explained with complete sincerity, counted as a legitimate food group. Sofia requested apple juice.
Isabella ordered a glass of red wine with the kind of specific detail that included the grape varietal and the vintage year, the words rolling off her tongue like she’d been ordering wine in Italian restaurants since long before she could legally drink in any country. The waiter nodded with the polished deference of someone who recognized when a customer knew exactly what they wanted and why.
While they waited, Sofia began rearranging her silverware into an elaborate family configuration. The fork became the daddy, the knife became the mama, the spoon became Sofia herself, and the butter knife was transformed into a character called Detective Blueberry.
She launched into an intricate narrative in which the silverware family went on a beach vacation. The spoon got sand trapped in her shoes, a development Sofia treated as a crisis of such catastrophic proportions that it required the immediate intervention of every remaining utensil on the table.
The fork-daddy tried reasoning with the sand. The knife-mama called for backup. Detective Blueberry opened a formal investigation into the nature of beach hazards.
"She does this at every restaurant," Isabella said with the fond resignation of a parent who had long ago surrendered control of the dinner table to a small tyrant. "Last week the salt shaker married the pepper grinder and the napkin dispenser officiated."
"That’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard," Kumiko breathed, already leaning toward Sofia with the rapt attention of someone witnessing high art.
"Don’t encourage her. She’ll start casting the bread basket."
Jordan studied his menu while his peripheral vision tracked the table’s social geometry. Chloe sat to his left, her posture perfect, her menu held at the exact angle that allowed her to read while simultaneously monitoring every other person at the table through the reflection in her water glass.
Kumiko sat to his right, her body angled toward Sofia and Isabella with the open, magnetic pull she directed at anyone who demonstrated genuine warmth. Isabella sat across from him with Sofia between them, her wine arriving with a quiet clink as the waiter set the glass at her elbow.
Isabella took a sip without checking the label and her shoulders dropped two inches, the first visible release of tension Jordan had witnessed since the statue.
Her entire body softened from alert-mother-in-crowd mode into something closer to her actual resting state, which appeared to be a combination of extremely relaxed and extremely aware, like a cat stretched across a sunny windowsill who could still catch a bird if one flew too close.
