Chapter 106: Chapter 94: Hypnos Attacks
The plants inside Hope’s Ark were flourishing.
The Blue Bamboo had matured, forming a small grove. Its rhizomes spread far and wide underground, sprouting numerous fresh Blue Bamboo Shoots.
Zhang Ji held off on harvesting it for now. Once it grew a bit larger, he could start collecting it regularly every day.
It wasn’t just the Blue Bamboo Shoots; the bamboo itself was a useful special material. According to Zhou Hao, its fibers were perfect for making special types of paper and clothing.
The Yan Fruit was also growing rapidly. After sprouting, it would grow into a small tree in two days—much taller than the Yan Fruit shrubs outside—and then flower, bear fruit, and ripen all in a single day.
The blooming period was endless; as soon as the flowers were picked, new ones would blossom.
The Bees, too, never stopped producing honey.
Before long, Zhang Ji would be able to eat honey made from Yan Fruit blossoms.
Zhang Ji didn’t check on the earthworms.
Hope’s Ark was beneficial for animal growth, but only indirectly. It first nourished the plants, which in turn affected the animals that consumed them.
It didn’t directly interfere with animal growth.
Perhaps this was related to its different evolutionary path.
...
「May 24th.」
Zhang Ji prepared to depart for an island called Terjia Island.
It was home to the Terjia tribe, a people who still maintained a primitive way of life.
Their leader, the king of the tribe, was a native named Valua. He had created a martial art called the Great Eater Technique.
With this skill, he had literally eaten his way to becoming a B+ rank martial artist.
In the game, the Great Eater Technique had a rating of Excellent Eight-Star.
It was hard to imagine that an unworldly native on a resource-scarce island could create such a martial art.
But that’s exactly what had happened in the game.
In the early game, this support skill was a god-tier ability for any player who wanted to save on consumables.
With it, one consumable was as effective as five.
For the current Zhang Ji, its significance was even greater.
Zhang Ji’s digestive efficiency could no longer keep up with the rate at which he converted Martial Crystals.
But if he had the Great Eater Technique and mastered it, Zhang Ji’s current training speed would increase dramatically.
If he relied solely on the Essence of Food for his training, this single skill could increase his training speed fivefold.
Terjia Island was located near Hesse Country. For this trip, Zhang Ji brought along a translator in addition to Bai Xiaoxiao.
The translator wasn’t for the language of Hesse Country, but for the native tongue of the islanders.
The Terjia tribe wasn’t undiscovered; their existence was known to Hesse Country.
However, Hesse Country was just a small nation, and dealing with a native tribe that had a B+ expert was too much trouble.
Fortunately, the B+ native, Valua, had no intention of leaving the island and was content to remain its chief, so the two sides had coexisted peacefully.
However, some tribe members who had ventured out were discovered by passing ships. This was how the Terjia language spread and became known to certain scholars.
In fact, Zhang Ji was learning from that very scholar at this moment.
The Terjia language wasn’t difficult to learn. After all, their lives were simple, revolving around farming, animal husbandry, fishing, and some light handicrafts.
The entire language system comprised fewer than a thousand words.
"They are quite xenophobic. If you get too close, they’ll drive you away immediately. Mr. Zhang, if you want to conduct your research, it would be best to observe them from a distance with a telescope," the scholar told Zhang Ji.
"What about a drone?" Zhang Ji asked.
"There’s an Ascended-rank native martial artist on their island who is incredibly perceptive. If a drone gets near, even a biomimetic one, he’ll shoot it down immediately." The scholar’s expression grew wistful as he spoke.
After all, there were probably only one or two hundred Ascended-rank martial artists in the entire world.
For a native tribe to produce one was nothing short of miraculous.
Zhang Ji, however, gleaned another piece of information from the scholar’s words.
Valua wasn’t just physically tough; his Spirit was likely very strong as well.
It probably hadn’t reached the B-rank level, though.
In the game, he’d never used any related combat techniques—he was just a tank with fast movements and high damage.
They made their way to the airport and boarded the plane.
Zhang Ji felt that something wasn’t quite right.
To be precise, he felt uneasy.
It was the feeling of being constantly watched, but he could never locate the source.
Zhang Ji didn’t dismiss it as his imagination. ’They must be well hidden,’ he mused, ’probably using some kind of electronic equipment to avoid detection.’
He wasn’t surprised, though.
’When you get famous, you’re bound to have some paparazzi watching your every move.’
Zhou Hao had already turned down several interview requests on his behalf.
’If these people want to watch, let them,’ he thought. ’It’s not like I’ll lose a pound of flesh over it.’
With that thought, Zhang Ji closed his eyes and resumed his training.
He was still practicing the Iron Body Skill.
Although he had already decided to practice the Indestructible Vajra Body Art later, it was still best to increase his physical durability as much as he could for now.
....
「Lanz Airport.」
Several disguised members of Guning Country’s Eye’s Imperial Guard relayed the news of Zhang Ji boarding his flight.
At the same time, Chupnos Montu, commander of Guning Country’s Claw’s Imperial Guard, also departed.
His destination was none other than Hesse Country, the same as Zhang Ji’s.
....
After getting off the plane, Zhang Ji had Bai Xiaoxiao rent a car from a local company at a premium, then set off for the coast with the scholar they’d brought as a translator.
Surprisingly, there were no self-driving cars in Hesse; they had to be driven manually.
Thankfully, Bai Xiaoxiao’s driver’s license was valid here; otherwise, they would have had to hire a driver.
The car drove on, soon leaving the city behind. The landscape on either side quickly turned to wilderness, and the road conditions were inconsistent.
After all, it was a small country with a modest economy and a less-than-ideal political system; it was no surprise that its infrastructure was lacking.
Suddenly, the car began to slow.
Before Bai Xiaoxiao could say a word, Zhang Ji’s eyes snapped open, and he stared at the road ahead.
A figure was standing there.
He was about six-foot-three, with tan skin and a full beard, wearing a long white robe. He looked to be a middle-aged man of about forty.
Zhang Ji’s gaze lingered for a moment on the emblem on the man’s shoulder.
A crimson-gold claw.
The Claw of the Phoenix.
Commander of the Claw’s Imperial Guard, Chupnos Montu.
’An old acquaintance,’ Zhang Ji thought.
Back when he played the game, this was the guy who had hunted him down when he’d gone to the Royal Mausoleum dungeon in Guning Country to acquire an Epic-rank, bloodline-exclusive martial art.
He had killed him a dozen times, but Zhang Ji had later returned the favor by slaughtering him dozens of times over.
’No wonder I had a bad feeling earlier. So this is why,’ he realized.
’This guy’s strength should be B+.’
He was stronger than both Falin of the Wing’s Imperial Guard and Bennett Montu, the commander of the Eye’s Imperial Guard. He was second only to Hasting Montu, commander of the Sense’s Imperial Guard.
’If we fight, I can’t guarantee a win unless I use a Spirit Strike.’
’But there’s no way I’ll lose, either!’
’I’m a well-rounded fighter with multiple combat styles.’
’Close-quarters combat testing stats and skills, long-range energy attacks, using my full Body Technique to kite him, a battle of attrition, a contest of Recovery... I’m not lacking in any of these areas.’
’So, to me, this Hypnos before me is just a nuisance.’
"What’s with this guy? I was about to go around him, and he stepped right in front of the car!" Bai Xiaoxiao frowned, slamming on the brakes. She turned to the translator beside her. "Theo, is he trying to pull an insurance scam? Ask him what he wants."
Theo nodded and was about to ask, but Zhang Ji had already opened his door and stepped out of the car.
He walked to the front of the car, stopping less than ten meters from Hypnos.
"So it’s true. You successfully obtained the Divine Blood!" Hypnos said.
"You managed to find that out? Did you capture Robby?" Zhang Ji asked.
"It’s only a matter of time before Pretton is captured," Hypnos said. "But I came for you this time."
"To avenge Falin?" Zhang Ji sneered.
"No. I’m here to invite you to return to Guning Country. All of you," Hypnos said. "The Zenar and we share a common origin. The hatred of the past can be set aside. You may have killed Falin, but he disobeyed orders and acted on his own initiative. He deserved to die. The position of commander of the Wing’s Imperial Guard is now vacant. You have the right and the ability to replace him. Return to Guning Country, become the new Imperial Guard Commander. It would be far better than running a tiny club here in the Roman Country."
"Huh?"
Zhang Ji really hadn’t expected this turn of events.
’Because I have the bloodline and I’m strong enough, they’re inviting me to take Falin’s place after I killed him?’
’Have they mistaken me for a member of the Zenar tribe?’
’That’s probably it...’
’But I have no plans to go to Guning Country at this stage. Even if I do go there someday to get something, or even bring Guning Country under my rule, that’s all for the future.’
’It’s too early to get involved now.’
’Right now, I just want to accumulate enough power, return to the Eastern Extreme Country to get my revenge, vent my frustrations, and clear my mind.’
"Your invitation seems sincere enough, but I’m afraid I have my own business to attend to. I can’t go to Guning Country for now," Zhang Ji replied.
"That is the one answer I was hoping not to hear," Hypnos said with a sigh. "It seems I will have to resort to more forceful methods."
The moment the words left his lips, Hypnos moved.
BOOM!
His figure instantly exploded forward at supersonic speed. Over such a short distance, Hypnos reached directly for Zhang Ji.
However, Zhang Ji was already prepared.
He had reacted even before Hypnos made his move.
BAM!
Palm met palm, and a shockwave erupted. The sound alone shattered the windows of the rental car, covering them in a spiderweb of cracks. Inside, the two passengers’ ears rang, a sharp pain piercing their eardrums.
The figures of Zhang Ji and Hypnos flew backward, each thrown off by the force of the impact.
While still in the air, Hypnos adjusted his posture and charged toward Zhang Ji once more.
Not wanting to involve the two in the car, Zhang Ji spun around and dashed toward a nearby hill.
When he reached the top of the hill, Hypnos arrived right behind him. Zhang Ji laughed. "Come on! Show me the strength of the Commander of the Claw’s Imperial Guard. It’s a good chance to see if I have what it takes to bring an entire country to its knees!"
