Chapter 50: Chapter 46: To Hell with Power
The power she relied on, her methods for toying with those beneath her, and even her bodyguard had all failed in an instant before Zhang Ji.
It stripped away her sense of security.
Having lost her sense of absolute control, she had now lost all reason. Only one thought remained: kill Zhang Ji!
The middle-aged man’s expression grew somber as an overwhelming aura suddenly bore down on Zhang Ji.
Zhang Ji’s eyes narrowed, his own expression turning grim.
Dust abruptly scattered around the middle-aged man. The next instant, he appeared at Zhang Ji’s side.
"BOOM—!"
He threw a palm strike, and the air cracked with an explosive sound, actually generating a white ring of dust and vapor.
Zhang Ji could see it clearly, but his body couldn’t quite react in time.
In his haste, he could only raise his right arm and try to block with his elbow.
"CRASH—!"
Immense power surged through his arm. Zhang Ji’s feet shifted, using serpentine footwork to dissipate the force. At the same time, his muscles trembled violently, absorbing a great deal of the palm strike’s power.
Zhang Ji retreated several steps, but his opponent’s next palm strike immediately followed.
This time, Zhang Ji didn’t retreat. His muscles, tensed to their absolute limit, suddenly released. Coordinating Dragon Form’s unified power with Snake Form’s whipping hand, he lashed out with a palm strike of his own.
"WHUM! BANG!"
A massive crack of sound erupted between their palms. A shockwave rolled outward with the two of them at its center.
"Agh!"
Watching from a distance, Xiao Ningning was so shaken she felt dizzy. Her ears ached with a constant ringing, her Qi and Blood roiled within her, and blood began to trickle from her nostrils. Her legs gave out, and with a stagger, she collapsed to the ground.
When Grandmasters fought, for someone not even at the level of a professional fighter to be so close was no different from seeking death.
In this exchange, Zhang Ji and his opponent were evenly matched, both retreating a fair distance.
But Zhang Ji had to build up power for his strike, while his opponent could unleash such might with every move. All things considered, the man’s offense was slightly stronger than Zhang Ji’s.
After the blow, the middle-aged man was about to strike again but was distracted by Xiao Ningning’s cry of pain behind him.
He realized he couldn’t fight Zhang Ji so close to her. He immediately stepped forward with a palm, unleashing a pushing force that sent Zhang Ji staggering back.
Zhang Ji’s strength was inferior, so he was continuously forced back, and the battlefield quickly moved away from Xiao Ningning.
"BANG! BANG! BANG!"
"BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!"
"WHUM—!"
"CRASH—!"
"BANG!"
It was like a clap of thunder, occasionally interspersed with the hum of metal and the crack of a whip, as Zhang Ji and the middle-aged man’s movements grew ever faster.
Their strengths were comparable. The man’s palm strikes were ferocious, too powerful for Zhang Ji to take head-on; he could only retaliate after gathering his strength. Yet Zhang Ji’s defensive techniques for dissipating force were also incredibly effective, preventing the man from dealing a fatal blow. For a time, they were locked in a stalemate.
In less than a minute, they had exchanged hundreds of blows at blinding speed. Zhang Ji used a charged strike to push the man back, using the rebound to retreat a fair distance himself.
"At this rate, we could fight until nightfall and not have a winner!" Zhang Ji said. "You can go back!"
"She ordered me to kill you. If I fail, my friends and family will suffer terribly," the middle-aged man said.
"She really is a difficult master," Zhang Ji sneered.
"I couldn’t agree more," the man nodded. "But it’s my bad luck to be stuck with a master like her."
"Then I have no choice but to let you die here," Zhang Ji said.
Hearing this, the man wasn’t angry. Instead, he cupped his fist in salute. "Mountain-Pushing Hand, Yuan Zhi!"
This was the etiquette of the martial world, performed before a duel to the death.
"Five Elements Sect, Zhang Ji!" Zhang Ji returned the salute.
The moment their salutes ended, they attacked almost simultaneously.
No dodging, no evading—only a direct, head-on clash.
Zhang Ji stopped using the force-dissipating techniques of his Snake Form Fist, preparing instead to meet the blow head-on.
"CRACK! BOOM!"
The air between their palms detonated. Immense power erupted from the point of impact, kicking up a cloud of dust.
Zhang Ji retreated slightly, using his Snake Form Fist to sway his body and redirect the force. The next moment, a metallic sheen covered his body as a loud hum reverberated.
"WHUM—!"
He shot out another palm strike!
This strike contained his own power, the power his iron body had absorbed, and the force he had borrowed from his opponent’s palm strike using his Snake Form.
Yuan Zhi could see this strike was extraordinary, but he still had no intention of dodging. Instead, he mobilized all the Qi in his body and blasted out another palm strike to meet it.
"RUMBLE—!"
With a thunderous crack, both Zhang Ji and Yuan Zhi were thrown backward. But Zhang Ji’s body was like a coiled spring. The instant he landed, he dropped into a boneless, serpentine crouch, then shot forward again.
"BOOM—!"
A deep crater formed in the earth where Zhang Ji had launched from. He drove both palms forcefully toward Yuan Zhi.
Yuan Zhi also shot forward, unleashing his Mountain-Pushing Hand to clash head-on with Zhang Ji once more.
The blow forced them apart again, but this time, it was Yuan Zhi who was knocked back farther.
"RUMBLE—!"
Zhang Ji struck out again. Yuan Zhi desperately gathered his Qi, sinking his stance so his feet dug into the mud, and met the attack with another palm strike.
He refused to believe—refused to accept!—that his seventy years of mastery in the Mountain-Pushing Hand could be weaker than that of a junior like Zhang Ji, a practitioner of Horizontal Martial Arts Training!
And so he wouldn’t dodge. He would match Zhang Ji blow for blow.
"RUMBLE—!"
"RUMBLE—!"
After five consecutive head-on clashes, Zhang Ji unleashed his Overlapping Waves technique. Each palm strike was more powerful than the last. At the same time, his body was nearing its limit; his muscles and bones ached, and his internal organs felt strained.
But Yuan Zhi, opposite him, was in a worse state. His lower body was now quite literally buried in the earth. His Qi and Blood surged violently, rupturing the capillaries beneath his skin and turning his entire body crimson.
Zhang Ji spun, unleashing the sixth Overlapping Waves Palm. This time, he focused all the Qi in his body into his palm, causing it to glow with a faint blue light.
Opposite him, Yuan Zhi’s expression was incredibly grim. He mobilized every last bit of his Qi, Gathering the faintly yellow energy into both of his palms.
"BOOM! CRUNCH!"
The instant their four palms met, patches of skin all over Yuan Zhi’s body burst open. The ground beneath him exploded, creating a deep crater.
Zhang Ji stumbled backward, gasping for air twice to calm his surging Qi and Blood.
Opposite him, Yuan Zhi’s body had been torn to pieces.
From the first blow to the moment of death, the entire battle had lasted less than ten minutes.
Zhang Ji felt a pang of emotion. The man had been a powerful expert. If he hadn’t chosen to engage in a deathmatch of clashing palms, they might have fought until nightfall without a clear winner.
Glancing back the way he came, Zhang Ji took a step and quickly leaped back to where Xiao Ningning had been.
By now, Xiao Ningning had scrambled to her feet and was berating the bodyguards Zhang Ji had taken down.
"Get up! All of you, get up and kill him! Kill him!" Xiao Ningning screamed, kicking one of the bodyguards.
She didn’t even notice Zhang Ji approaching from behind her.
Perhaps the shockwaves from the fight had damaged her hearing.
Zhang Ji watched her back, a cold glint flashing in his eyes.
’To hell with power and influence. I can’t tolerate letting an enemy escape when I have the strength to stop them!’
"CRACK—!"
"CRUNCH! SQUELCH!"
Xiao Ningning’s body was still standing, but her head had been shattered. Where her brain had been, there was now a fist.
"THUD."
Her body fell to the ground, the remnants of her face still twisted in a venomous snarl.
Zhang Ji looked at the bodyguards he had paralyzed by using his Qi to block their Qi and Blood. Their faces were masks of pure horror.
’Originally, I was just going to let them lie here for a while, but now...’
"If you must blame someone, blame yourselves for finding such a psychotic master," Zhang Ji said aloud.
The next moment, his figure blurred. Six more bodies lay on the ground.
Looking back at the path he had taken, Zhang Ji couldn’t help but curse.
"What the hell was all that about?"
He had been minding his own business, training in his Sect, not bothering a soul. Then some crazy woman shows up out of nowhere, inexplicably wanting him dead. How could something be so unfair?
Zhang Ji was once again struck by the cruel reality of the world.
Just because you kept to yourself didn’t mean you could live a peaceful life.
It was just like the common folk on Shanli Island, ravaged by pirates.
They had never done anything to provoke the pirates, yet the pirates still came for them.
Gu Ming hadn’t provoked anyone, but he still died in a fight.
Without enough strength in this world, you didn’t even have the right to live to see tomorrow. How could anyone even speak of a peaceful life?
