Chapter 72: Chapter 63: Consuming the Bloodline Potion
Once the Divine Flower—a key harmonizing agent—arrived, Robby officially began concocting the potion.
He used rudimentary equipment for purification, then added a variety of materials Zhang Ji didn’t recognize, including metals, ores, plants, and even the fur and horns of animals.
This was followed by repeated cycles of purification....
During a break when Robby was drinking some water, Zhang Ji asked, "How long will this take?"
"Several days, probably," Robby said. "This is delicate work. The final step is especially crucial—I have to use my Spirit to guide the potion to the correct resonant frequency for the reaction to truly occur. Even I can’t guarantee success every time."
"Can’t you use machinery?" Zhang Ji asked.
"At least not for this part," Robby said. "As of now, there’s no machine that can simulate spiritual fluctuations. Therefore, we can’t use machinery to extract the necessary energy from the void."
Zhang Ji sighed, feeling a wave of regret.
’Such a useful technology. If it hadn’t been used to violate ethical and moral boundaries, it probably wouldn’t have been completely banned by so many major nations.’
Robby shrugged. "There’s no such thing as an experiment that doesn’t violate ethics and morals in some way. All scientific progress involves reforming and trampling upon the existing order and rules. Those with vested interests in the old ways will naturally reject it."
"But they could have been more gradual," Zhang Ji countered. "They could have taken it slow, established detailed regulations, and ensured steady development. It wouldn’t have led to so many disasters."
From what Zhang Ji knew, Alchemy Technology was gradually unbanned after the Saint King War.
But the deliberate indulgence of the Roman Country’s Saint King led to even more irreversible catastrophes.
A single careless Alchemy experiment could result in countless deaths, or even create Alchemy Monsters.
In his version of the game, there was a dungeon called the ’City of Distortion.’ It was filled with people who had undergone Alchemy Transformations, as well as chaotic beasts, and even the steel jungles had come to life...
’If only they had established rules first and proceeded gradually, so many disasters could have been avoided.’
"But the truth is, once you’ve tasted the benefits of moving quickly, you can never go back to moving slowly," Robby said.
"Which is why it became forbidden," Zhang Ji said.
"Wisdom that’s too far ahead of its time is never accepted by society." Robby took a sip of water and continued, "And to gain something, you must first give up something else. That’s an iron law. Most of the time, ethics and morals limit progress. Of course, they also stop us from destroying ourselves."
After their conversation, Robby returned to his work.
With nothing else to do, Zhang Ji, having already mastered the Guning language, decided to start learning the Roman and Color Cluster languages as well. It would save him the trouble of having to learn them when he eventually went to the Roman Country.
At night, he would go to the roof of Robby’s clinic to see if the moon was out. If it was, he would take out the Moonlight Cup to collect the lunar essence.
He didn’t dare use a drone here, fearing it would be shot down and he’d lose the cup.
Without the aid of potions and relying only on that tiny, unstable bit of lunar essence, Zhang Ji’s training progress had slowed considerably.
He had been practicing the Iron Body Skill whenever he had a spare moment since his journey from the sea, but he had only managed to achieve three refinements.
With ample resources, twenty-odd days would have been enough for him to master this combat skill.
But Zhang Ji was not discouraged.
He had already planned out his next steps.
Once things settled down, he would push for B-rank with all his might to gain sufficient power.
Once he reached B-rank, he would be able to access many of the Ruins Realms he knew about.
’Those instance resources are the real key to leveling up.’
Without cheats, normal players had to grind dungeons relentlessly to quickly level up and train their skills.
Now that Zhang Ji had his own ’cheat,’ getting those resources would be like adding wings to a tiger. Reaching A-rank before the Saint King War wouldn’t be difficult. In fact, with careful planning, he could even become a very well-rounded A-rank fighter.
「Seven days after Robby received the Divine Flower.」
He called Zhang Ji into the laboratory and asked for a drop of his blood.
Robby added the drop of blood to the potion he had prepared.
The next moment, the Dela’s Blood inside the test tube began to boil violently, flashing with a crimson-gold light. Then, a pure white radiance emerged, suppressing the reaction and gradually stabilizing it.
Soon, the crimson-gold Dela’s Blood swirled within the test tube. It still radiated light and heat, but it no longer burst into furious flames upon contact with the air as it had before.
"It’s truly beautiful," Zhang Ji remarked.
His eyes filled with nostalgia.
’He remembered seeing it in his past life. It looked just like this, though it seemed much less bright back then. He wasn’t sure why.’
’Then again, he had been looking at it through a screen, whereas now he was seeing it in person. A slight difference was to be expected.’
"It’s precisely because it’s so beautiful and captivating that countless scholars have walked the forbidden path in its pursuit," Robby said, also filled with emotion.
"Is it done?" Zhang Ji asked.
"Theoretically, yes," Robby answered. "And it didn’t have a major rejection reaction with your blood. However, the transformation process will be intense. If you can’t endure the pain, it could cause neurological damage..."
"So there’s a willpower check, huh?" Zhang Ji said.
He had released a willpower test quest in the game himself.
It required players to complete a mini-game that involved filling something with water, all while wearing a pain simulator.
Completing it would award points to the Spirit and Technique stats, as well as a ’Badge of Willpower.’
"I imagine your willpower is sufficient," Robby said, his gaze falling on the scars covering Zhang Ji’s body.
"How do I use it? Drink it?" Zhang Ji asked.
’In the game, players just drank it down in one gulp. But here in reality, Zhang Ji felt it was a bit unscientific for this stuff to work via the digestive tract.’
"Yes. You could also inject it, or even pour it on, but I’d worry too much would evaporate," Robby explained. "Alchemy Potions don’t work through digestion. They function by directly creating an informational interaction with the subject in the micro-quantum domain."
Zhang Ji raised an eyebrow.
’If this were a game, he’d definitely be roasting the developers for their lazy writing.’
’When in doubt, just blame quantum mechanics for everything.’
Meeting Robby’s gaze, Zhang Ji didn’t hesitate. He drank the entire potion.
He tilted the vial back, pouring every last drop into his mouth.
He couldn’t taste anything, but it was scalding, like drinking soup straight from the pot.
But Zhang Ji didn’t spit it out, forcing himself to swallow.
Then it went down the esophagus into his stomach.
Zhang Ji felt like he had swallowed a red-hot piece of charcoal. A warmth slowly spread through his internal organs.
"Are you feeling anything?" Robby asked.
"A little warm..."
Before Zhang Ji could finish, his expression suddenly changed.
The warmth had become a searing heat!
It spread rapidly from his core to every inch of his body.
He felt as if his entire body was being set ablaze.
In fact, his surface temperature was rising so fast that even Robby could feel the heat radiating from him.
Everything in Zhang Ji’s vision began to blur. It felt like he was burning up with a fever.
He tried to stand, but after just two steps, he staggered and collapsed.
"What’s wrong? HISS..."
Robby rushed forward to help him up, but his hand recoiled. Zhang Ji’s skin was scalding hot.
"Hang on, I’ll get some ice!"
Robby hastily set up a large bathtub, filled it with water, and, wearing gloves, dropped Zhang Ji into it. He then grabbed ice from his cold storage and dumped it into the tub.
The ice water seemed to stabilize Zhang Ji’s condition somewhat, but the ice was melting rapidly, forcing Robby to run back and forth for more.
...
Just before his consciousness faded, Zhang Ji finally realized what was wrong. A few things clicked into place.
’In the game, players were usually B-rank when they did this quest. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have been able to defeat the Divine Elephant.’
’He was only C+, a considerable way off from B-rank.’
’And the potion in the game... was it diluted? Is that why it wasn’t as bright as the one he just saw?’
’B-rank players in the game drank the diluted potion and their bodies just turned red. But what about him, a C+ rank, drinking the undiluted original?’
Burning. An endless burning.
Zhang Ji felt his entire body being consumed by flames.
His skin and flesh were destroyed by the fire, his muscles and bones calcined to a blackened crisp.
The bloodline power of an A-rank fighter had been transplanted into him, unaltered. It was far more than his body could handle.
Just as he thought he was about to be burned to death, he faintly sensed a cool current weaving through the inferno.
’The Divine Flower was working!’
The Divine Flower of the Color Cluster Country had the ability to purify bloodlines and suppress the side effects of their awakening.
Many bloodlines were too potent in their initial awakening, often harming or even killing the user. The Divine Flower’s purpose was to guide them toward a gentler awakening.
Against Dela’s Blood, however, the Divine Flower couldn’t completely pacify it. It could only mitigate a portion of the bloodline’s power.
But for Zhang Ji, this was a life-saving intervention.
His internal primal energy was mobilized. In an instant, he entered the Celestial Serpent Stance.
This primal energy transformed into pure power, nourishing his body, replenishing his spent energy, and dramatically accelerating his cellular regeneration.
....
An exhausted Robby sat by the edge of the tub. He had already refilled the ice a dozen times.
Yet Zhang Ji’s skin and flesh continued to char, and all Robby could do was slow the process.
By now, Zhang Ji looked like a piece of charcoal, and his chest had stopped moving altogether.
’Another failed experiment,’ Robby thought to himself.
’If such a prime specimen failed, then who could possibly succeed?’
’Can a divine bloodline truly only be borne by a god?’
"CRACK~!"
Suddenly, a crisp cracking sound snapped Robby back to his senses.
He saw the slightest rise and fall in Zhang Ji’s chest.
A crack had appeared on the charred surface.
"CRACKLE CRACK CRACK~!"
More and more cracks appeared, spreading until they covered his entire body.
Suddenly, the charred shell broke away.
It fell away to reveal Zhang Ji underneath, his skin a healthy, ruddy color. His body was now covered in crimson-gold patterns, through which faintly glowing blood seemed to flow.
Robby’s face lit up with delighted surprise. He had seen these same markings on the royalty of the Guning Country.
These were the marks of the Sun God’s bloodline, but Zhang Ji’s were purer, more complete.
Because this was the true, first-generation bloodline.
To put it bluntly, even if Dela himself were resurrected, this is what he would look like.
Of course, Zhang Ji couldn’t yet wield the full power of this bloodline—he still needed to grow. But there was no doubt that the bloodline transplant had been a success.
His potential for growth had been raised to a new level. Sooner or later, he would be able to reach a level of power comparable to Dela himself.
