Morden stood frozen at the edge of the garden with his watering can still in hand as he watched the roses move in a way that had nothing to do with wind.

’That’s not normal. Roses absolutely don’t do that,’ he said again as if to confirm his own thoughts.

He set the watering can down slowly and carefully, trusted his best not to make any sudden movements, and took a cautious step closer.

The petals shifted again, curling inward and unfurling in a slow, rhythmic motion, almost like they were breathing.

’Is it dancing?’

’I have been away for just a single day, and now, I have a dancing plant.’

The thought felt ridiculous the moment it crossed his mind, but he couldn’t shake it either, at least not with the way the movement kept repeating itself. It was just too deliberate and too patterned to be anything normal.

He crouched down in front of the closest bush while studying it carefully, his eyes tracing every leaf and thorn for any kind of explanation.

From what he saw, there was actually nothing visibly wrong with it. It didn’t have any strange coloring, no unnatural growths, nothing that looked close to the strange and corrupted plant life he’d occasionally seen scattered throughout the Omnisphere.

’This isn’t a plant Genetic Beast,’

’Just roses. Mom’s roses. The same ones that have been sitting here for years doing absolutely nothing but growing normally.’

Except right now, they were clearly not doing anything.

Morden reached a hand out slowly to touch it, but he began hesitating just above the nearest bloom. He half expected it to lash out or wilt away from him entirely.

Instead, the moment his fingers brushed against the petal, the entire bush seemed to freeze for an instant before leaning gently into the touch.

’What?’

He pulled his hand back instinctively; he was startled, and the moment he did, the rose drooped slightly, like it wanted to show its disappointment.

’Okay. That’s definitely not something roses are supposed to do either.’

He reached out again, more deliberately this time, and allowed his fingers to rest against the petals for longer than they did the first time.

The Rose bush leaned into his hand again, the movement soft and unmistakable, almost affectionate in a way that made the whole situation feel even stranger than it already did.

’It’s reacting to me, or should I say to touch, but it might not be specifically to me.’

Morden sat back on his heels, running a hand through his hair as he tried to piece together what he was even looking at.

Nothing about his life had been normal, not since he had woken up in that investigation room a few days ago, and this time it was his mom’s precious rose.

’Could this be connected to everything else? The red stones, the shadow, and that piece of clothing I found in there.

He didn’t have an answer, but he wasn’t about to just sit there and do nothing either.

Remembering the watering can still sitting where he’d left it and what he actually came here to do, Morden reached over and picked it back up, tilting it carefully over the base of the bush.

The water hit the soil, and almost immediately, the rose bush erupted into motion.

Every one of its stems swayed at once, as its petals fluttered rapidly, the entire plant practically vibrating with something that could only be described as excitement.

Morden nearly dropped the can in surprise.

’It’s dancing. It’s actually dancing.’

’I have seen a healing plant, and now I am seeing a dancing flower.’

He stood there for a long moment, watching the bush sway and shimmer under the pale morning light, completely unsure of what he was even supposed to do with what he was seeing.

’This isn’t normal. This isn’t even close to normal, and it definitely wasn’t doing this yesterday.’

He tried watering the next bush over, just to see if the reaction would repeat itself, and sure enough, the moment the water touched its roots, it began to sway in that same strange rhythm, leaves rustling together in something that almost sounded like quiet laughter if he let his imagination run far enough.

Every single one of them. All of Mom’s roses.’

Morden set the can down again, his mind racing through every possible explanation he could think of, each one feeling less likely than the last.

’Did something happen while I was gone? Did that strange Merlin come over while I wasn’t around?’

The thought sent a small chill down his spine, but nothing about the roses felt threatening, not even a little. If anything, the whole display felt closer to joy than danger, an odd, misplaced kind of joy that didn’t belong in a quiet garden behind an ordinary house.

"You aren’t dangerous, right?" he said while touching one petal.

His attention drifted back toward the house, toward the one room he hadn’t stepped into since coming home, the one room he usually avoided out of habit more than anything else.

His mother’s room.

’She used to talk to these roses all the time. She said they liked the attention. ’

He’d always assumed it was just something she said, an old habit, maybe even a small joke she used to keep herself company while tending the garden alone. He’d never once considered it might be literal.

’What if it wasn’t just talk?’

Morden stood slowly, brushing the dirt from his knees with his eyes still lingering on the swaying roses behind him.

’What if there’s something in that room that explains all of this?’

Though it sounded unlikely, it’s still a possibility.

He hesitated at the back door for a moment, leaving his hand resting against the frame, weighing whether it was worth disturbing a space he’d left untouched for a particular reason due to something like this.

’It can’t hurt to look. Not after everything that had happened before.’

Steeling himself, Morden pushed the door open and stepped inside, the quiet kitchen that led to the living room that led to the stairs leading him toward the one door at the far end he hadn’t opened since he got back.

He reached for the handle, his fingers hovering just above it, his mind still replaying the image of the roses swaying happily under his touch.

’Roses that react to people. Or maybe just to me, specifically.’

’Mom’s roses.’

’Is it possible?’
