As Zhang Wenda watched in utter disbelief, the once-flat ground began to change. Some of the students rapidly merged with the ground, becoming floor tiles for anyone to trample, allowing better-dressed children to hurry right over them.
’If all this has changed, then... then...’ Staring at the increasingly bizarre world before him, Zhang Wenda’s hands began to tremble.
He couldn’t care about anything else. He launched himself over everyone at top speed, sprinting toward the Xinhua Bookstore.
Spurred on by the Red Core, Zhang Wenda’s speed was astonishing. A mere minute later, he was already inside the Xinhua Bookstore.
Facing a very surprised 2826, Zhang Wenda lunged forward, grabbed him by the neck, and roared, "Get Tan Yougen to deploy his men! To the Internet World, now! The Angel Engine’s purpose is to shatter the barriers between all the Thought Waves!"
As the scythe in Zhang Wenda’s hand dug into the flesh of 2826’s shoulder, the man—once so perpetually amped-up—pressed a hand on his assailant’s arm. "Calm down. We can talk about this."
At that moment, 2826 spoke again. "Don’t worry, Haiyan already passed on the message. We’ve been notified. Besides, Bureau 507’s combat teams are all approaching Thought Wave 13."
But Zhang Wenda was in no state to calm down. He yelled at 2826, "Send me there now! Hurry! Can’t you open a portal?"
"What would you do? It’s a battlefield over there. It’s far too dangerous." 2826 made no move to comply.
"My uncle is still there! He’s being attacked by Qianxi! I have to see for myself what’s happened to him."
He paused for a moment, then added, "And Song Jianguo... that silly cat. She must be scared out of her mind. I have to rescue her, too."
struggled to wrench himself from Zhang Wenda’s grasp. "Don’t worry about them. Once the combat teams arrive, he and his companions won’t be in any danger. We’ve had a contingency plan in place for a while."
Hearing this did nothing to reassure Zhang Wenda. "Cut the crap and open the portal! I don’t trust that old bastard Tan Yougen! To him, everything is a calculation! I have to see with my own eyes!"
While the two were still arguing, the entire Xinhua Bookstore began to shake violently. Everyone looked out the window and saw the water from the river rapidly ascending, coalescing in the sky to form an inverted sea.
This completely unnatural sight immediately drew the gazes of everyone in Thought Wave One.
"This is... the Shanghai Rules? The rules of Shanghai have bled into Thought Wave One? Then that means..." Realizing something, 2826 immediately raised a flashlight and began waving it rapidly, casting his Spectral Magic.
But when the circular portal formed, what appeared within was not the Internet World, much to Zhang Wenda’s surprise. It was the Shanghai he had visited once before.
As the rules of other Thought Waves seeped in, the inverted ocean in the sky, along with its islands, began to plummet. The once-stable world instantly became a living hell.
To make matters worse, Zhang Wenda saw aircraft clearly belonging to the Big Circle rapidly approaching Shanghai.
Sensing the enemy’s approach, the Oriental Pearl Tower on Shanghai’s central island began to glow red, instantly transforming into a Laser Tower that fired relentlessly at the approaching enemy aircraft.
But with the rules of Shanghai contaminated by those of other Thought Waves, a single Laser Tower was woefully inadequate. The situation looked dire.
quickly pulled out his phone and yelled into it, "Director! It’s a trap! Have the combat teams heading for the Internet World fall back immediately! It’s a diversion! They’re using the chaotic rules to attack our headquarters!"
"You son of a bitch!" Zhang Wenda smashed his fist into 2826’s head, snapping two of his propellers.
Zhang Wenda glared viciously at 2826. He opened his mouth to say something, but ultimately held his tongue.
He knew it was useless to say anything. When forced to choose between his uncle and Bureau 507 headquarters, 2826’s rigid mind would unthinkingly choose the Bureau every time.
"Fine! If you won’t save him, I will!" Without a moment’s hesitation, Zhang Wenda spun around and bolted toward the dial-up point for the Internet World.
The scenery around him seemed to rush backward, but Zhang Wenda gritted his teeth and charged forward.
When he reached the entrance to the Internet World, he saw a square passageway being held open by a Cyber Daoist, who was protecting the many people escaping through the portal.
"Hey! Don’t go in! It’s dangerous in there!" Before the Daoist could finish, Zhang Wenda had already plunged back into the Internet World.
The Cavalry was easy to find. All he had to do was follow the silver line.
Steaming from exertion, he arrived back at the base of the Cavalry, only to find the place completely transformed.
The Cavalry’s colossal hands and feet were plunged deep into the terrain of the Internet World like massive cables, and all around it were rifts of various sizes, each leading to a different Thought Wave.
Above the Cavalry, five massive airships led a squadron of smaller aircraft, bearing down on the area.
Their target was clearly the giant computer. The huge "507" emblazoned on the airships’ gasbags revealed their allegiance. A steady stream of people leaped from them, landing on the Cavalry below.
But then they began to turn, seemingly trying to retreat to go rescue Shanghai. The situation instantly descended into chaos.
But Zhang Wenda paid no mind to any of that, rapidly closing the distance as he searched for his uncle.
"Jianguo!" Zhang Wenda spotted Song Jianguo huddled in a cat bed and shouted, "Have you seen my uncle out here?"
"Huh? No, I haven’t," Song Jianguo replied.
’Don’t tell me he’s still inside? Could it be...’ Zhang Wenda’s heart sank. He spun around to face the giant computer at the heart of the Cavalry.
"This is no place for you. It’s too dangerous. Take the cats and leave. The farther the better, you hear me?"
Having said his piece, Zhang Wenda charged resolutely toward a crack in the computer.
Watching Zhang Wenda’s retreating figure, Song Jianguo subconsciously took a few quick steps to follow but then stopped.
She looked down at the cats at her feet. "Come on, let’s go. It’s too dangerous here."
Zhang Wenda was now rapidly approaching the powered-on computer. Fortunately, the area was in such utter chaos that no one noticed what he was doing.
As the translucent form of Zhang Wenda slipped back into the computer’s interior, filled with green circuit boards, he barely registered a wrench flying toward his face.
He dodged to the side, but a gigantic hand clamped down, seizing him in its grip.
It was the Buddha, the one who had forged the Holy Ring for the Angel. He was now swinging a giant hammer, bringing it down mercilessly toward Zhang Wenda’s head.
