The instant the giant foot fell, a blur flashed past.
When Qianxi sensed something was wrong beneath his foot, he looked up. He saw a hollow scythe monster dragging the heavily wounded rabbit aside, dodging his attack.
The next second, Zhang Wenda blurred into motion, rushing toward a spot not far off where 2826 was hunched over, fiddling with something on the ground. "Hurry, hurry, hurry!"
Just as Zhang Wenda shouted, 2826 rapidly chanted a Spell. With a quick slash of the flashlight in their hand, a portal to Xinhua Bookstore instantly appeared on the ground.
"Trying to run? It's not that simple. I told you, I control the rules of Thought Wave 13."
Seeing Qianxi raise his gloved right hand, about to snap his fingers, Zhang Wenda unhesitatingly pulled out a blood-red Obsidian Dagger and plunged it into his own chest.
It was a trophy he'd taken from Saber—the Copan Sacrificial Knife. He remembered the Mayan saying that using it would attract the gaze of Kopan.
He didn't know who or what the Mayan's "Kopan" was, but judging by how nervous the man had been, he was certain the knife was no ordinary object.
He didn't know what would happen, but under the circumstances, he was willing to bet on it. As long as he could save the others, he wouldn't hesitate to sacrifice his own life.
The very moment Qianxi's fingers snapped, the dagger sank into Zhang Wenda's chest. Instantly, everyone present felt an intense, pervasive sense of being watched.
The sky above the Internet World turned pitch-black. A horrifying presence emanated from the darkness, interfering with the rules of the Thought Waves, and the entire Internet World began to shake.
"Don't even think about touching my Thought Wave!" Whether it was the Angel's escape or anything else before, Qianxi had never been this furious. It was clear that Zhang Wenda's gambit had cost him dearly.
With a wave of his giant right hand, the enraged Qianxi sent a massive mouse cursor arrow smashing down toward Zhang Wenda, who was on his knees coughing up blood.
"THUD!" Suddenly swelling to several times his normal size, Teacher Rabbit took the full force of the arrow for Zhang Wenda. As the tip sank into his body, blood sprayed from his three-lobed mouth.
Meanwhile, the influence of the Copan Sacrificial Knife continued to spread. The sky of the Internet World flickered, plunging it into darkness then light, like a faulty power grid.
Taking advantage of the chaotic flickering, Zhang Wenda struggled to his feet. Running on fumes, he picked up the heavily wounded Teacher Rabbit and charged toward the open portal.
Ten meters! Five meters! Three meters! At the very last second, two large hands formed from the Black Cat reached through from the other side and yanked both of them out.
The instant they were clear, 2826 promptly closed the portal.
When it was all over, everyone was sprawled on the ground, gasping for air. But as he stared up at the white ceiling, Zhang Wenda smiled.
'Looks like I really made Qianxi pay for that one,' he thought. Most importantly, no one on their side had died. It was the best possible outcome in a terrible situation.
"You can actually smile at a time like this." Song Jianguo came over with the cat and stared at the blood-red dagger embedded in Zhang Wenda's chest. He poked it tentatively with a finger. "Can you pull this thing out?"
"I think so..." Zhang Wenda was unsure. It had hurt for a moment when he stabbed himself, but then he felt nothing.
'It doesn't seem to be life-threatening for now, but having a knife sticking out of my chest is... unsettling.'
Everything he got from the Mayans was just plain weird.
"Don't worry about me, I'm fine. Go check on Teacher Rabbit." Zhang Wenda laboriously climbed to his feet, went to Teacher Rabbit's side, and carefully pulled the large arrowhead from his chest.
Seeing that the tip had only pierced a little way in, Zhang Wenda breathed a small sigh of relief. "It's alright, Teacher. It's just a scratch. How are your other wounds?"
But in response to Zhang Wenda's question, Teacher Rabbit remained frozen on the spot, like a puppet.
"Teacher? Are you okay?" A seed of unease sprouted in Zhang Wenda's heart. He gently patted Teacher Rabbit. In the next instant, Teacher Rabbit's stomach abruptly swelled to an immense size.
The next second, with a sickening sound of tearing flesh, the huge Teacher Rabbit exploded into a thousand pieces right in front of him.
Amidst the rain of blood and gore, an endless flock of Crows burst from where Teacher Rabbit's body had been. One of them held the white Double Fish Jade Pendant in its beak.
The point of the arrow wasn't to kill Teacher Rabbit. It was to implant Tang Xingxiong's Double Fish Jade Pendant inside him.
Zhang Wenda stood frozen, watching the Crows fill the sky and fly away, watching the pieces of Teacher Rabbit scatter across the floor.
"No, no... it can't be!" Trembling, Zhang Wenda fell to his knees. He clutched the rabbit's head tightly to his chest as tears streamed down his face, his choked sobs echoing in the silence.
But then his sobs turned into laughter—wild, manic laughter.
"Haozi, don't be like this." Song Jianguo's eyes were red-rimmed. He reached out to help him up but was grabbed by the arm.
"It's okay! It's okay!" Zhang Wenda shouted, excitedly shaking Song Jianguo. "I had a backup plan! Thank god I had a backup plan! I was worried something like this might happen, so I had 2826 open the portal to Thought Wave One!"
"There's no death in Thought Wave One! We're in Thought Wave One, so Teacher Rabbit can't die! There's no death here! He won't die!" Zhang Wenda babbled incoherently.
Finished, Zhang Wenda clutched the rabbit's head and bent down to gather the pieces of Teacher Rabbit's body. Trembling, he collected every scrap of flesh and blood, piling them together and waiting for a miracle.
An hour passed. Then two. Then three. The body remained a bloody, mangled pile.
"It can't be... It can't be!" Zhang Wenda's body began to shake. He turned to 2826. "You said it! You said there's no death in Thought Wave One! You said it!"
2826 didn't answer, only silently turning away.
"No! It can't be! Thought Wave One is the world of a child! There's no death in a child's world!" Zhang Wenda repeated over and over, as if trying to convince himself.
But as time ticked by, the despair in Zhang Wenda's eyes grew uncontrollably.
As he muttered, his monstrous form slowly began to change, collapsing back into the shape of a helpless child, hugging his knees tightly.
Just as the thick despair was about to completely consume him, a miracle occurred.
Before everyone's eyes, all the pieces of Teacher Rabbit on the floor began to rapidly fuse, reassembling themselves in their proper order until, finally, a brand-new, fluffy Teacher Rabbit stood there once more.
"Wenda." Teacher Rabbit held out his big, fluffy paws. Zhang Wenda leaped into them excitedly. He felt the firm but gentle grip of those paws lift him up, spinning him in circles high in the air.
Feeling the centrifugal force, Zhang Wenda looked at the reborn Teacher Rabbit and laughed with pure joy, as if he were a child once more.
After a few spins, Teacher Rabbit gently set him down and softly patted his head with a paw. "Wenda. It's time for Teacher to leave."
Hearing this, Zhang Wenda looked up at Teacher Rabbit in confusion. "Where are you going?"
Teacher Rabbit didn't answer, only reaching out to pat his head again. "Wenda. It's time for Teacher to leave."
Just then, Teacher Rabbit looked out the window. Zhang Wenda followed his gaze. A vintage green train, puffing white smoke, was slowly descending from the star-filled sky.
It passed silently through the wall and came to a stop before Teacher Rabbit. A door on the green train slowly slid open.
"Wenda... you have to be good from now on. Teacher is really leaving this time."
