Infinite Nightmares

Chapter 171: The Situation

Song Jianguo didn't quite understand the strange things Hu Maomao was saying, so she just kept eating her dessert.

"There's nothing wrong with being alone. You don't need to care about others, and you don't need others to care about you. It's just that... when you get a day off like this, you suddenly don't know what to do."

When Hu Maomao saw that Song Jianguo had finished the dessert in her bowl, she pushed her own plate over.

"Go find something good to eat! Or something fun to do! How could you not know what to do?" Song Jianguo didn't get it. 'How can you have free time and be worried about having nothing to do?'

Hu Maomao shook her head. "You're still young. You'll understand when you're a bit older. Anyway, let's not talk about that. How did you and Zhang Wenda meet?"

With Hu Maomao's gentle probing, the story of how Song Jianguo and Zhang Wenda met was soon drawn out. As Song Jianguo spoke, the atmosphere instantly became much more relaxed.

Hu Maomao placed a cup of coffee with sugar in front of Song Jianguo. "Actually, even if you hadn't said anything, I would have found out. Zhang Wenda is definitely going to seek revenge on Qianxi, but that's going to be a very difficult path."

"If Qianxi were really that easy to deal with, Big Circle wouldn't have been around for so long."

"No matter how hard it is, he has to do it! That computer-head is the one who killed Rabbit!" Song Jianguo said, gritting her teeth.

Hu Maomao looked at her with some surprise. "You want to get revenge on Qianxi too? Why?"

"Because he killed Rabbit!"

"But Biaozi is Zhang Wenda's uncle. What does it have to do with you?"

Faced with this question, Song Jianguo seemed at a loss for words. "Well... Rabbit was a really good person. He even treated me to a meal and secretly gave me candy."

"And... I can't really explain it. I just feel like he was a good person. Rabbit shouldn't have died so easily! It's wrong for him to die like that!" Recalling the scene, Song Jianguo's eyes turned a little red.

"Forget it, I won't ask anymore. Go back and tell Zhang Wenda that if he wants revenge, his best bet is to use the momentum. Qianxi is also the Third Line's number one most-wanted criminal," Hu Maomao said as she stood up.

"Why don't you guys eat at my place today? It's rare to have guests over."

"Okay, okay! What are we eating? I like spicy food." At the mention of food, Song Jianguo and the Black Cats all perked up their ears.

"Your taste is quite unique. Just like Biaozi, you like spicy food. Where are you from?"

"I don't know. I forgot." And with that, Song Jianguo launched into the long story of her amnesia.

The lunch Hu Maomao made that day was simple yet plentiful: stir-fried pork with peppers, tomato and egg fried rice, and sweet and sour pork ribs. To take care of Song Jianguo's cats, she even opened all the cans of douchi-fried fish she had in the house.

The moment the cans were opened, the small room was instantly filled with a chorus of meows.

Having spent so long in a world of intrigue and backstabbing, Hu Maomao had almost forgotten how to just talk to people.

Hu Maomao actually quite liked this naive little girl. With her, there was no need to deliberately hide anything; you could say whatever was on your mind.

"Biaozi and I were good friends. Now that Biaozi is gone, you and him are my juniors. If you run into any trouble in the future, remember to come find me. I'll help in any way I can," Hu Maomao said, watching Song Jianguo fight with a Black Cat over a can of fish.

"Really? Then can I be your temp worker?" Song Jianguo's eyes immediately lit up.

"No. That's where I draw the line. I already told you, it's illegal."

"Come on! This is the help I need right now! That tin can said I'll be in a miserable state if I don't have a job!"

Just as Song Jianguo and Hu Maomao were talking and eating lunch, Hu Maomao's phone, which had a worn-out rag doll charm dangling from it, suddenly started vibrating.

She pulled it out and looked at it, then immediately put down her bowl and chopsticks. "Stop eating. Come with me to headquarters."

"What for? Whatever it is, can't we talk after we finish eating!"

"Something's happened to Zhang Wenda!" With a wave of her right hand, Hu Maomao raised a flashlight and began to draw a door on the wall with beams of red, blue, and yellow light.

By the time Hu Maomao and Song Jianguo rushed to the door of an operating room, they saw 2826 conferring with some doctors.

"You're here? It's okay now. The situation has been temporarily suppressed."

"What happened to him? What's going on?" Song Jianguo asked, her face tense, still holding her bowl.

"See for yourselves." 2826 led the two of them to a window. They saw that Zhang Wenda's rabbit jacket had been unzipped, revealing an Obsidian Dagger with a golden hilt planted squarely in his chest.

"What is that thing?" Hu Maomao couldn't help but frown.

"Kopan's Sacrificial Knife. I don't know where Zhang Wenda got it. Logically, something this dangerous should be explicitly forbidden from being brought in," 2826 said, looking at the information on their phone.

"I remember this! Haozi used it against Qianxi, and it was super powerful. It made a lot of Qianxi's abilities disappear in an instant," Song Jianguo explained.

"A ritual tool from the Maya civilization? It's powerful, all right, but I'm afraid the price to be paid is unbearable." At this point, Hu Maomao also realized the gravity of the situation.

The moment Hu Maomao finished speaking, the surroundings instantly grew cold. White frost condensed on the glass, and everyone started to see their breath fogging in the air.

"Kopan is here!"

Everyone present quickly raised their flashlights and began to draw strange patterns around Zhang Wenda with Yellow Cores. As the bright yellow patterns connected end to end, the bone-chilling cold finally dissipated.

Zhang Wenda had seen this whole scene unfold. He zipped up his jacket and said to 2826, who had just walked in, "Explain. What's going on?"

"Based on an analysis of past records, you are now a sacrifice for Kopan. I've heard that things from the Maya are extremely dangerous. Using them can lead to a fate more tragic than death."

The situation at the time had left Zhang Wenda with no other choice. If he hadn't used it, he would have been killed by Qianxi long ago.

Instead of dwelling on what happened before, he needed to focus on how to solve this huge problem now.

After thinking for a moment, he spoke to 2826. "What was that Spectral Technique you just used? Can you teach it to me?"

"Of course. This Brass Band Curse is something you were supposed to learn anyway. However, it can only delay Kopan's approach. Kopan's influence is greatly reduced because we're so far from America, so it can't take you for now. But this is just a temporary solution."

"This effect will only get stronger each time, until it finally takes you away completely. As for what will happen after Kopan takes you..."

2826 trailed off, but their meaning was self-evident.
