The vast, empty surroundings made Zhang Wenda’s voice carry far, far away.
He had only shouted a few times when he saw a trail of dust approaching him at an incredible speed.
When Zhang Wenda saw who was coming, he spotted a middle-aged man who was also four meters tall, wearing a suit, his face greasy. The man looked extremely furious, as if he was about to rip someone to shreds.
"Who! Who is disrespecting Lord Yang! You’re embarrassing us in front of the whole world!!"
Seeing this, Jia Junpeng, who was standing to the side, couldn’t help but give a thumbs-up in admiration. "Just as expected from a Zhihu regular."
"Him!" Zhang Wenda quickly pointed toward the old man in the distance. "He’s the one disrespecting Lord Yang! He’s the one embarrassing us on the international stage!"
As soon as he said that, Zhang Wenda could see the man’s pale face turn an even deeper shade of crimson. Furious, he charged toward the battlefield.
Neither Zhang Wenda nor Hu Maomao could handle that giant old man, but this newcomer charged right in, his fists connecting with flesh as he began to brawl with him.
As the two became locked in an inseparable struggle, Hu Maomao floated back, completely bewildered. "Who is that guy? What’s going on?"
"Never mind what’s going on. We found who we were looking for, so let’s get out of here. This isn’t a good place to be!" Zhang Wenda hopped on his Black Cat brand bicycle, and once everyone else was on, he pedaled forward and charged ahead.
Zhang Wenda kept going until even the massive Tower of Babel was out of sight, showing no signs of stopping. It was as if he intended to pedal all the way back to the dark web.
"Haozi! Come quick, the pointy-head is not doing well!" Song Jianguo’s words made Zhang Wenda’s face drain of color.
He quickly slammed on the brakes with his foot, stopping the bicycle, and ran toward Ahava, who was tied to the back seat with a cat leash. He found that Ahava’s face was deathly pale and something was very wrong.
"Hurry, open the door so we can go back! The faster, the better! He needs treatment right away," Zhang Wenda urged Hu Maomao.
Hu Maomao had just pulled out his flashlight to open the door when he suddenly pointed it to the left. A large, sycophantic face, illuminated by the blue light, startled everyone.
It was the same man in the suit who had been lured over by Zhang Wenda’s words earlier. Though calling him a man wasn’t quite right—his skin was an iron-green, not at all human.
His body looked to be in a wretched state, his suit torn to shreds, but none of this seemed to affect the smile on his face.
"Oh my, be careful! Don’t jostle Lord Yang! Watch out, you might cause a diplomatic incident!" The man said, looking at Ahava in Zhang Wenda’s arms. He looked so pained that he seemed desperate to take over and help himself.
Zhang Wenda quietly asked Jia Junpeng, who was next to him, "How did we get rid of one just to get stuck with another? What are we supposed to do with this thing?"
"Why don’t you try playing along with him?"
After a moment of deliberation, Zhang Wenda said, "Our foreign friend is fine now. Thank you for your help. You can go back."
"How could that be okay? Do you understand foreigners as well as I do? Let me receive him. I can speak foreign languages!"
Just as the man was about to snatch Ahava away and an anxious Zhang Wenda was about to argue, the man caught sight of Ahava’s long, pointy head. A look of disappointment immediately replaced the sycophantic expression on his face.
"What the hell? So he’s just a Mayan. I thought he was an Indian. Hmph. How can someone from a poor, backward place like that even be considered a foreigner?" After saying his piece, the man turned and left, looking utterly disappointed.
It was as if the man’s words held some sort of magic. Ahava, who had been on the verge of death just moments ago, suddenly snapped his eyes open. He staggered, about to charge forward and demand an explanation. "What did you just say?"
"Calm down, calm down, he was just talking nonsense." Zhang Wenda quickly held him back and shot Hu Maomao a look, signaling for him to open the door quickly.
Seeing that Ahava still had the energy to argue with someone, Zhang Wenda couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief. ’Looks like he won’t be dying just yet.’
The process had been a bit chaotic, but at least it was resolved.
As the door to Bureau 507 headquarters opened, Song Jianguo ran inside first with her cat. Then, Hu Maomao said to Zhang Wenda, who was supporting Ahava, "Get in, quick. I’ll be the last one through and close the door."
But then everyone saw Zhang Wenda stop in his tracks. He stared intently at something in the frigid wind in the distance, his three-lobed mouth trembling as he asked, "Uncle?"
"What?! Biaozi?" Hu Maomao immediately whipped his head around and saw a rabbit gradually becoming distinct in the hazy mist.
But as the rabbit in the distance became clearer, everyone could see its color. It wasn’t purple, but white.
Without needing anyone to explain, Zhang Wenda, who had gone through this once before, immediately understood. That wasn’t his uncle. It was himself from some point in the future. It could only be his future self, because his past self hadn’t turned into a rabbit.
Looking at the white rabbit in the distance, Zhang Wenda felt a complicated mix of disappointment and other emotions.
Hu Maomao stepped in front of Zhang Wenda, looking uneasy. "You know the rules of Thought Trend #13, right? Contact with your past or future self is absolutely forbidden. Otherwise, anything could happen."
"I know. I’ve been through this once. I won’t make contact with him." Zhang Wenda watched the distant rabbit. His future self looked anxious, alone, and seemed to be searching for something very important.
"How about you go ask him for me what my future self is looking for? He seems really desperate. If I know what it is, maybe I can prevent myself from losing it in the first place."
Hu Maomao simply shook his head. "You think you’re the only clever one who’s thought of that? It’s no use. No contact of any kind is allowed, not even passing messages through someone else."
"I’ve noticed you and your uncle are both the type to break the rules. Stop trying to touch the forbidden. You won’t always be so lucky. Since there’s a rule, you should follow it! Let’s go. If we stay any longer, he’s going to see you."
Zhang Wenda took one last look at his future self, treating the experience as just a minor episode, and walked with Ahava into the open portal.
The most important problem right now was still the Kopan on his body. If he didn’t get rid of that thing, it could kill him at any moment.
As the colorful archway slowly closed, a tense Hu Maomao finally let out a sigh of relief. At last, there were no further complications.
"Hey? Are you okay, Ahava?" Zhang Wenda looked around, then said to Song Jianguo, who was watching the show from the sidelines, "Hurry up and find someone! Get the best doctor to save him!"
"No need, no need." Jia Junpeng walked over confidently, took out a feather, and waved it back and forth under Ahava’s nose.
After Ahava let out a big yawn, he touched his body in amazement, discovering that all his injuries and pain had vanished.
"How did you do that?" Zhang Wenda asked in astonishment.
Jia Junpeng then confidently explained to Zhang Wenda, "Diseases from the Internet World only stay in the Internet World. As long as you’re out of Thought Trend #13, all illnesses collapse into nothing more than a minor fever or a small cold."
