As rubble and bricks rained down, Zhang Wenda, underneath the shield, felt the world shake as if his entire body was about to be crushed flat.
Fortunately, while Song Jianguo was usually unreliable, she hadn't messed up at the critical moment. As the rumbling outside gradually died down, they had finally survived the attack.
Once he felt that there was no more movement outside, Zhang Wenda quickly pushed the shield away with both hands and stood up amidst the billowing dust.
Ignoring everything else, Zhang Wenda rushed toward Wang Xiaohua, finally finding her on the brink of death in a pile of rubble.
Amidst the debris, she and the Bodhisattva statue had been crushed together. The girl, her head bleeding from the impact, had been impaled through the chest by one of the Bodhisattva's broken hands and was bleeding uncontrollably. It was clearly a fatal wound; she was on the verge of death.
"Hold on!" Zhang Wenda grabbed the broken hand and yanked. A spray of Wang Xiaohua's blood followed.
Just as Wang Xiaohua's head slumped to one side, on the verge of bleeding to death, Zhang Wenda pressed his rabbit paw hard against her back. Her bowl-sized wound instantly shrank by half, while a wrist-sized bloody hole appeared on Zhang Wenda's own abdomen, blood beginning to gush out.
'This isn't working. Her face is ashen; the wound is still too severe.'
Just then, Song Jianguo clapped a hand on Zhang Wenda's shoulder. "Don't worry! We'll help you! You still have me and my cats!"
Zhang Wenda gave her a surprised glance. 'When did she become so considerate?'
As he quickly transferred the injury, once all the cats and Song Jianguo had each taken on a pinprick-sized hole on their abdomens, Wang Xiaohua quickly regained consciousness.
"Are you okay?" Zhang Wenda quickly helped her up.
As Wang Xiaohua felt her own smooth abdomen, discovering the fatal wound had so easily vanished, her expression became complex as she looked at Zhang Wenda. 'I can't believe I was saved by this guy.'
Hatred for the chameleon and gratitude toward her savior intertwined, leaving her unsure of what expression to show him.
"Thank you." After saying this simply, she immediately ran off in the direction of another teammate.
Zhang Wenda was about to give chase when he suddenly froze, turning his head to look toward a dusty section of the ruins to his left. The voice of a Little Bodhisattva, who looked to be only four or five years old, spoke, tinged with despair: "Zhang Zhongliang, we waited for you for ten whole years! You said you would come save us!"
"Zhang Zhongliang?" The moment he heard the name, Zhang Wenda's pupils contracted to pinpoints. He recognized it. 'That's my grandfather's name!'
Zhang Wenda slowly walked over, stopping beside the afterimage to look down at the Little Bodhisattva. 'So the Xiaozhang they were talking about was my grandfather!'
Tears streamed down the Little Bodhisattva's face as it sobbed, "Xiaozhang, you promised! You said you'd come save us! Ma Gu and the Rabbit God have already disappeared. Why aren't you here yet?"
Watching it cry, Zhang Wenda felt a tightness in his chest. He wanted to say something, but the figure before him was just an afterimage from the past. No matter what he said, it wouldn't hear him.
The Little Bodhisattva wiped its tears with the fine gauze on its arm and said with a pitiable grievance, "Xiaozhang, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have complained. We know you're busy. Don't worry, we'll keep holding on. But please, hurry. We really can't wait much longer."
As Zhang Wenda watched, the Little Bodhisattva before him gradually dissipated. Zhang Wenda surveyed the scene and let out a long sigh.
'I was wondering if everyone who came here saw these afterimages, but it looks like that's not it. Their appearance seems to be keyed to a bloodline.'
'The message left by these Little Immortals probably appeared because they mistook me for my grandfather.'
'Why my grandfather? What did he promise them back then? And why didn't he show up in the end?' His mind was a complete mess.
"Hey! Haozi! Get over here!" Song Jianguo's voice called from a distance.
'Saving lives is more important right now.' Zhang Wenda swiftly crushed his chaotic thoughts and hurried over to Wang Xiaohua and Song Jianguo.
When he got there, he saw a huge, round hole in the middle of the cleared rubble. The male team member who had been shielding Wang Xiaohua hadn't disappeared completely—only his blood-soaked lower body remained.
As for his fate, it was self-evident.
Zhang Wenda's brow furrowed. Knowing they couldn't delay any longer, he turned to Wang Xiaohua and asked, "Can you tell me what the hell is going on? What exactly was your mission? This is Thought Wave Two, right?"
Wang Xiaohua, her eyes slightly red, shook her head. With a flick of her ponytail, she started walking out of the ruins. "This way. We'll talk as we walk."
Zhang Wenda led Song Jianguo and hurried to catch up, their first priority being to leave the dusty ruins.
After leaving the Bodhisattva Temple, Zhang Wenda discovered rows of small, short Land God Temples behind it.
These small shrines, each the size of a doghouse, were arranged in neat rows like tombs, giving them an exceptionally sinister appearance.
Wang Xiaohua, who seemed to have been here before, confidently made her way through the rows of shrines.
"The Bureau's mission for us was to raid a B3 Level stronghold of the Big Circle," Wang Xiaohua began. "Our orders were to take no prisoners. Total annihilation."
'A Big Circle territory?' Zhang Wenda thought to himself.
"At first, everything was normal. The target matched the general strength of a B3 Level stronghold. But things quickly went wrong, especially after the captain and the others went underground."
Finished speaking, Wang Xiaohua stopped in front of a demolished small shrine. With a wave of her right hand, the air shimmered, and a flashlight appeared before them, hanging upside down.
The flashlight cast a beam of purple light directly onto the ground. The light penetrated the soil, revealing a tunnel leading deep underground.
"My task with Jianwen was to guard the entrance. But then… those living statues appeared." Finishing her sentence, Wang Xiaohua paused, a trace of fear showing in her eyes.
"Are you familiar with those things? What does the Bureau call them?" Zhang Wenda asked.
"I don't know what they're called. But if it wasn't for an investigator's screw-up, something that powerful should never have appeared in a B3 Level stronghold!" Wang Xiaohua said sharply.
"Calm down, calm down, don't panic. You and your captain should have a special way to contact each other, right? Since things have gone south, you should call them up here quickly. We need to figure out a way to get back and call for reinforcements."
"I tried. It's no use." Wang Xiaohua took an electronic device with a screen from her pocket. "Ever since they went in, I haven't been able to contact them at all."
"Then can you contact headquarters directly? Have Old Tan send some people over?" Zhang Wenda asked again.
